India is Afghanistan's most reliable regional partner, the Pentagon has said as it praised New Delhi's contributions to the peaceful development of the war-torn country

India is Afghanistan’s most reliable regional partner, the Pentagon has said as it praised New Delhi’s contributions to the peaceful development of the war-torn country. Pentagon, in its semi-annual Afghan report to the US Congress that covers the period of June to November 2018, said India interpreted the new US South Asia policy as an opportunity to increase its economic involvement with Afghanistan.

The South Asia Strategy, which was announced by President Donald Trump in August 2017, has focused on pressuring Pakistan to limit support and safe-haven for proxy terrorist and militant groups and to play a constructive role in facilitating Afghan reconciliation, the Pentagon said in the report.

Noting that the US strategy calls for a regional approach to enhance stability in South Asia, the report said this includes building a broad consensus for a stable Afghanistan, emphasising regional economic integration and cooperation, stressing cooperation for an Afghan-led peace process, and holding countries accountable for their use of proxies or other means to undermine stability and regional confidence.

“India is Afghanistan’s most reliable regional partner and the largest contributor of development assistance in the region,” said the Pentagon. Since late 2015, India has pledged USD 1 billion in development assistance in addition to the approximate USD 2 billion already spent on Afghan infrastructure.

“India provides significant training opportunities for Afghan officers and enlisted personnel and has frequently offered to increase its burden-sharing for Afghanistan. Approximately 130 Afghans travel to India each year to attend various military academy and commissioning programs,” the Pentagon said.

CBS news live reporting that a Pentagon official has informed them that even if US withdraws 6500-7000 troops from Afghanistan by spring, there will still be another 8000-8500 US troops remaining in Afghanistan which is about the same number which was in Afghanistan in December 2016.

hahaha LOL yeah India is reliable partner but we are leaving them pretty much all alone by calling 7000 soldiers for now and in few months time ALL...poor India media needs something to feel happy about it :D
Lol.
US will never completely withdraw from Afghanistan.
Even Taliban has been forced to accept that USA will maintain two atleast major bases in Afghanistan (which means 5000 troops).
US currently has 6 major bases for 15000 troops.

Dude get over it. Their end game has started from Afghanistan as well. It will be a gradual withdrawal and it is also in Pakistani interest that US forces doesn't leave Afghanistan all at once else it will create an uncertainty and deadly power sharing war in between Afghans. For now US pulling out 7K soldiers is most probably a condition put by Afghan Talibans during their meeting in Abu Dhabi.

Not at all.
Trump was always against troop increase in Afghanistan.
Now he will maintain this 8000 number for atleast three years.
US will stay indefinitely in Afghanistan just like Korea

and mind you as far as India is concerned in Afghanistan....thankyou very much for your services ..you guys are quickly getting irrelevant

Afghanistan needs peace so as entire region which includes Pakistan in particular. Afghanistan can earn a lot thru CPEC and gas pipelines ...India too needs energy so peace in Afghanistan is desired by everyone for that a major deal must be broken between Talibans and other players. Alone Afghan Govt is useless, powerless and shit.

US special envoy for Afghanistan is visiting India next month.
So India is pretty much embedded in Afghanistan.

Taliban has failed to take a single Afghan city or provincial capital.

India was quite happy when US had 8400 troops in Afghanistan in 2016 and it won't have any problem if US troop no.s get back to that level.

Taliban has failed to take a single Afghan city or provincial capital.

Talibans are guerrilla fighters and their strategy is not to hold any city but to attack every corner of the country at will and move out. This is how they operate and create problems.

Yes we will see that in couple of years time.

Lol.
Which is why they tried to take major cities like Kunduz, Ghazni and Completely failed.

Indeed, our role would get even bigger.
