Mumbai: A Russian cargo aircraft AN-124, which was hired by the US military, triggered panic at the Mumbai airport on Friday night. The plane carrying arms, ammunition and five people onboard was asked to land at the airport after it violated the Indian airspace.

The aircraft took off from Diego Garcia Island – a US military base near Mauritius in the Indian Ocean – and was heading for Kandahar in Afghanistan.

But it entered the Indian airspace at around 2200 hrs IST without having Air Traffic Control permission. The aircraft was forced to land at the Mumbai airport at 2240 hrs IST.

The AN-124 aircraft is used by military to haul cargo and is owned by a Ukraine-based logistics and cargo company. On landing, the Russian crew of the aircraft was immediately taken for questioning by officials of the central investigative agencies and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The questioning of the aircraft crew is on to ascertain the reasons of the airspace violation which swung the security apparatus into emergency mode on Friday night.

First of all they came from Pakistani airspace so it was the duty of your ATC staff to make it go through the right way. Secondly it is a US aircraft. An-124 is made by Ukraine, and Ukraine has given quite amount of Logistics support to the NATO.
.
And ya about the pigeons, BSF has already caught many hawks, with sensors attached to their feet on the Rajhasthan border.
.
Guess who has not been able to catch our pigeons yet.

Yes sensors to track their flight patterns and population...lets not try to make the hawk story to be something more than it really is.

The hawks were actually suicide hawks, Alas! they got caught!:tsk:

Armament

* Up to 3,500 kg (5,500 lb), including torpedoes, depth charges, mines, bombs and/or buoys

so much for being unarmed! If thats being 'unarmed', what do you consider as being 'armed'? Nukes in the hold?
Hmm....
i never knew that torpedoes, depth charges and buoys could bring down Migs, that too when flying over 'land'!

Thnx for the 'enlightenment' dude!

here is what i understand from the whole thing

the plane did have permission to fly over indian air-space but 2 different types of permissions are needed one for civil aviation and one for military aviation
the problem was it was flying with a civil aviation permission but the IAF suspected it to be involved in military transport so they took the step up and intercepted the flight

This aircraft had asked for the status of a non-scheduled aircraft and it flew over Indian flight information region as such. But to enter Pakistani airspace, it identified itself as a defence aircraft. It was still in Indian territory when this happened. The ambiguous status of the aircraft forced the defence ministry to issue orders to divert it to Mumbai," ----- as said by sources

This raises more questions than it answers. For eg, what were the reasons for the ambiguity? Wouldn't the ATCs know the difference between a civilian and military plane? And why wouldn't the Russkies (friendly way, no offense meant) let the Indian ATCs know about it?

****takes out his spying glasses and ponders ****

.
i talk to one of my links in india...it seems some confusion from the pilot...it was US chartered plane..russian--ukrainian make (an32) ..carrying some military parts !!!!

didnt have the entry code...hence pulled back to mumbai

So not only the India media cannot tell their elbow from their @ss regarding the recognition (USAF Jet Fighter vs AN124 Transport) of the intruder but also are idiotically illiterate on the direction (North vs South) form where the aircraft came into the Indian airspace. Last I checked, Diego Garcia was not a Pakistani province!! What a bunch of morons & idiots running the Indian media!!!:disagree:

Intrusion: US military cargo plane flies out: Rediff.com news

A US-hired military cargo plane that intruded into Indian airspace and was forced to land at Mumbai [ Images ], took off for Kandahar in Afghanistan on Saturday following government clearance after a 24-hour detention.

The External Affairs Ministry and the IAF in the capital approved the AN-124 aircraft's flight plan designating it as a foreign military cargo aircraft at 1530 hours and it flew out at 2240 hours, IAF spokesperson Wing Commander T K Singha told PTI in New Delhi

The US military had hired the Russian company Volga Dnepr-owned AN-124 to carry military medical recovery vehicles and medical aid equipment to its troops engaged in anti-Taliban operations in Afghanistan from its military base in Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean.

"The AN-124 had obtained Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) clearance with a mandatory Air Operations Routine (AOR) authority to fly as a foreign civilian aircraft, but later switched to US military call sign while entering Pakistani airspace. Hence, the IAF immediately activated its air defence mechanism and forced the plane to land," Singha said.

The Ukrainian Antonov-make world's largest transport aircraft with NATO code name Condor, which had been operating on the same flight plan for the last few days, had goofed up by using a civilian transport aircraft call sign VDA 4466 while in Indian airspace, IAF officials said.

However, it switched to military call sign REACH 813 while entering Pakistani airspace, which attracted the suspicions of the IAF's air defence units, they said.

"Since obtaining military clearance for using Indian airspace by foreign military aircraft is cumbersome, it has to go through Ministry of External Affairs, Intelligence agencies and then IAF. The operator resorted to the short-cut of obtaining a DGCA clearance as a civilian aircraft," an official said.

On Friday night, the unscheduled AN-124, with 18 persons on board, repeated the flight plan and entered the Indian airspace around 1730 hours.

Around 2000 hours, as it was nearing the Pakistani airspace, it changed its call sign. Immediately, the IAF's air defence Movement Liaison Unit in Mumbai activated its standard operating procedures and through Air Traffic Control radio calls forced the aircraft captain, Vladimir Ustelemov, to land it at the Chatrapati Shivaji International airport at 2240 hours.

No IAF fighters were scrambled to escort the aircraft as it clearly followed ATC radio calls to land, Singha said. After Indian authorities carried out a thorough check on the aircraft and its crew members, the US and Russian embassies in New Delhi approached the MEA and obtained fresh AOR authority with a defence clearance for it to fly out, IAF officials said.

"The US has admitted that it was a mistake of the operator from whom they had hired the aircraft not to have obtained a military clearance in the first place from the Indian authorities," they said.

Err..

Did you need to CHECK if DG was a Pk province ??

Check the direction from which the aircraft entered indian air space.

Tomatoes....Tamatoes!

Potatoes.....Patatoes!

The bigger moron and idiot than the Indian media is the Indian CAA who could not differentiate between a friendly and a foe in the first place.

^^^

A friend does not identify itself as civilian in our airspace and when entering Pakistan airspace changes into a military one. We did a good job of landing the plane, stupid opinions of some notwithstanding.

You are obviously the moron who may very well be sitting in the antiquated ATC & playing with his nuts & watching Star Plus when the aircraft entered Indian Airspace. Your radars may have been off due to power outage so that only thing left for you was for the Russian Pilot to recite Vande Matram as your entry code? You Indians are bigger dumbwits then I had imagined!

And P.S - I thought the plane landed of its own 'free will' without your IAF scrambling the antiquated flying coffins!?
