Bomb blast hits near mosque in eastern Saudi Arabian city of Qatif.


Two bomb blasts have hit near a Shia mosque in Saudi Arabia’s eastern city of Qatif while a third bomb has gone off close to a security headquarters at Prophet's Mosque in the eastern city of Medina.

Witnesses said Monday that they saw body parts at the site of the explosion near Qatif's Faraj al-Omran mosque, which is frequented by people in the holy month of Ramadan.

The first explosion in Qatif destroyed a car parked near the mosque, followed by another explosion just before 7 p.m. local time.

Local media said an attacker detonated his bomb when he was attempting to enter the mosque.

Nasima al-Sada, a resident of Qatif, told AFP that "one bomber blew himself up near the mosque," which is usually used by Shias in downtown Qatif. She added that no bystanders were hurt in the blast.

Qatif in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province is where most of the country's Shia population lives.

The explosion, which took place as the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan is drawing to its end, was the second such bombing on Monday in the kingdom. Hours earlier, an explosion hit the surroundings of the United States consulate in the city of Jeddah, in western Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi Interior Ministry said the attacker was killed and two Saudi policemen were injured in the attack which took place near a hospital.

JEDDAH: Diplomatic security officers thwarted a possible suicide bomb attack on the US consulate in Jeddah in the early hours of Monday morning, the Ministry of Interior said.
Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki said the bomber managed to kill only himself as he detonated his suicide vest at 2:15 a.m. when security guards approached him near the parking lot of a hospital nearby.
Cars were damaged and two security men suffered injuries, but they were declared safe after treatment, the MOI said in a statement posted on its website.
Al-Turki said the suicide bomber was identified as an expatriate in his 30s. He did not disclose the nationality.

Car explosion in Saudi city of Medina causes panic

The incident happened just after 7 p.m. local time on Monday when a car exploded near the Prophet's Mosque, causing large plumes of smoke that were visible from a far distance. At least three blasts were heard, according to witnesses.

Initial reports had indicated that the blast was caused by some sort of accident, but Saudi news channels later reported that the explosion was caused by a suicide car bombing. Saudi authorities did not immediately provide other information about the blasts.

Video from the scene showed at least one dead soldier in the vicinity of the vehicle, but the Saudi Gazette said at least two people had been killed. The explosions drew huge crowds after the initial panic subsided, but the mosque remains open though the security level has been raised to maximum.

The Prophet's Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world.
