Asia Cup stays in Bangladesh as the Indian board remains firm; PCB reduced to minority.

It is not often an Indian writ is overruled at an International Cricket Council (ICC) forum. So what chance did the Asian Cricket Council stand?

As reported by this paper, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was opposed to moving the Asia Cup out of Bangladesh, the political turmoil in the country notwithstanding. The ACC had no choice but to endorse the decision - made in Colombo on Saturday - to host the Asia Cup in Bangladesh only.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the lone dissenting voice in the ACC, was thus reduced to a minority. The PCB tried to convince the need to shift the venue but to no avail - the BCCI remained firm.

As a back-up measure, the ACC, masterminded by the BCCI, has decided to invite Afghanistan to the tournament. It remains the fifth team at this stage but the ACC is assured - in the event of an unlikely pull-out by Pakistan - that the tournament will still be four-team affair. It was a masterstroke, of sorts.

For the record, the ACC has maintained that the decision was unanimous. "There was no objection from the representative from Pakistan," ACC chief executive Ashraful Haq told Mirror. "All arrangements are in place and no one has raised any concerns about the safety in Bangladesh," he remarked. The tournament will be held from February 25 to March 8.
However, PCB sources have hinted at negotiations on the contentious issue. Pakistan wants to hold parleys on the matter on the sidelines of the ICC meeting next week. Its interim president Najam Sethi, however, did not respond to questions from this paper.

The thinking in the ACC is that the PCB is unpredictable, and its participation is not assured till the very last minute. But the ACC, led by the BCCI, is firm that the tournament should go ahead in Dhaka, and the council is prepared for any eventuality. It is ready to look beyond Pakistan.

It is not that the tournament has never been affected by boycotts. Pakistan had skipped the event when it was held in India in 1990-91.
The ACC said 11 matches will be played and the final will be heold on March 8.

Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh has taken a potentially decisive step forward following a meeting between officials of the two boards in Dubai on Thursday. The BCB said it had been told by Sri Lanka that the tour was on and the SLC, while not explicitly confirming it would send a team, said its final decision would depend on the visit, from January 13, of a security delegation to Bangladesh.

The tour had been in doubt because of security issues caused by political instability in Bangladesh and Thursday's meeting, on the sidelines of an ICC conference in Dubai, was scheduled to smooth out differences.

After the meeting, the two sides issued differing statements, though the substance of both suggested that it was a step towards the tour going ahead.

"Sri Lanka Cricket president Jayantha Dharmadasa has confirmed to the BCB that the Sri Lanka tour is on," BCB's media committee chairman, Jalal Yunus, said. "But the SLC's two-member security committee will arrive as per schedule on January 13."

The SLC was more guarded in its response. "We have said we are touring and we have taken the FTP [into consideration], so the assurance is there," SLC president Jayantha Dharmadasa said. "At the present time we can't say we're not going, and that's what I told them [BCB]. We have two people going to assess the situation, because it's changing day by day."

The security committee will comprise former CEO Ajit Jayasekara - an air commodore with the Sri Lanka Air Force - and vice-president Mohan de Silva. Incumbent CEO Ashley de Silva had said the board would make its final decision on the tour by January 15, with the team set to depart to Bangladesh on January 24.

It is expected that the security team will discuss details of the tour, including venues. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, one option for the BCB is to cut down on the venues, including possibly - as a last resort - offering to stage all the matches in Dhaka.

The tour is scheduled to begin on January 27 with two Tests, in Mirpur and Chittagong, followed by two Twenty20s and three ODIs.
