Iranian state television is reporting that a senior commander in Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard has been killed in Syria.

The report Friday said that Gen. Hossein Hamedani was killed in the suburbs of Aleppo in Syria while "carrying out an advisory mission," but didn't provide any further details.

Hamedani is one of the most senior Guard commanders to be killed in Syria. He was a veteran commander who had an important role in Iran's 1980-88 war with Iraq.

Iran is one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's main allies. Tehran has provided his government with military and political backing for years and has kept up its support since Syria's civil war began in 2011.

Guard commanders repeatedly have said Iran only has high-level advisers in Syria, denying it has fighters there.

Assad is from the Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. Iran is majority Shiite. Syria's rebels are mostly

Turkey's state-run news agency says Syrian journalist Salih Mahmud Leyla, who reported for the agency from northern Syria, has been killed in car bomb attack.

The Anadolu Agency said Friday that Leyla, 27, died in the attack in the town of Hreitan, in northern Aleppo province, late Thursday. It said the attack is believed to have been carried out by Islamic State militants.

Leyla sent photographs and videos from clashes in northern Syria and also reported on hardships suffered by the people there, Anadolu said.

In July, Leyla received injuries to his face while reporting on clashes in Aleppo and was brought to Turkey for treatment.

Leyla, who was from Aleppo, had trained as a computer technician. His wife of one year is expecting their first child, Anadolu said.

France's defense minister says French fighter jets fired airstrikes on the Islamic State stronghold of Raqqa in Syria, targeting foreign fighters plotting attacks in Europe.

Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Europe-1 radio Friday that two Rafale jets bombed a training camp "and the objective was achieved." It was the second French strike on Syria, and Le Drian said "it will not be the last."

He did not elaborate on the purported attack plots.

He criticized Russia's stepped-up and wide-ranging military action in Syria, saying "80 to 90 percent" of its actions do not target the Islamic State group. Russia says its air campaign is aimed against Islamic militants.

France joined the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State group in Iraq last year and expanded its campaign to Syria last month.

Hossein Hamadani, also spelled Hamedani (Persian: حسین همدانی‎‎), was an Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander who led the crackdown on protestors during the 2009-2010 Iranian election protests, also served in Syria as both an advisor to the Syrian government during the Syrian Civil War and as overseer for Quds Force operations in support of the Syrian government.[2]

Hamadani first rose to prominence during the 1979 Kurdish rebellion in Iran and the Iran-Iraq War, where he helped suppress the Kurdish rebellion in Iranian Kurdistan. Mohammad Ali Jafari appointed him as Deputy Commander of the IRGC in 2005, and together they planned how to deal with any attempted "velvet revolution" in Iran. Hamadani subsequently suppressed the 2009-2010 election protests in Iran.[3] He had been head of the IRGC’s Rassoulollah Corps in charge of Greater Tehran from November 2009 until January 2014,[4] and had been subject to international sanctions since 14 April 2011.[5][6]

Hamadani had also released a biography entitled Brother, It's Duty.[3]

Hamadani died in Aleppo, Syria on 8 October 2015.

He was a general. Gotta admire the Iranians, unlike other nations, their Generals take to the field than the table.
A pakistani general in line to become the next cheif of army staff led his troops in fata against talis by fighting himself. Was even shot. Another general i dont remember his name soon after he retired was coming out of a mosque in islamabad and saw a suicide bomber. He ran and held him didnt let him come close to the mosque and forced him to explode there away from the crowd.

I admire commanders like this, those who don't differentiate between their troops and themselves and fight and live with them in the front lines, not sitting behind a monitor 'commanding' the war.

May he rest in peace. The good thing about revolutionary guard is that they have thousands of people like him, they train their soldiers all like that. Sometimes, you can barely say who is the commander and who is the soldier, as they are the same with their soldiers.

He was martyred last night in a terror attack by ISIS around Aleppo. Last night ISIS launched a major assault in northeastern Aleppo and took some strategic areas including the important infantry school, mostly from rebels (Sham Front).

Assad should drop a few hundred barrel bombs on rebel areas to avenge his passing.

That's rubbish, no wonder, since you are using Wikipedia as a holy book. IRGC doesn't need people like him who are mostly sent to foreign missions to 'crackdown' on protests inside Iran. There isn't one single proof of that claim.
