India, Russia to develop new hypersonic cruise missile

New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) India and Russia have agreed to develop and induct a new hypersonic version of their joint venture 290-kilometre-range BrahMos cruise missile by 2015.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in this regard was signed between the two sides last month, in which they agreed on the final parameters for the new version of the cruise missile, Defence Ministry sources said.

The new missile, they said, will be known as 'BrahMos-2' and will have a speed of over 6 Mach (around 6,000 kilometres per hour) with a striking-range of 290 kilometres.

The range of the missile will not be extended as the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), to which Russia is a signatory, does not allow it to help other countries to develop missiles with ranges above 300 kilometres, they said.

Great news.Another feather in our crown.

There are a variety of 'effective' anti-ship missile defensive systems designed to 'counter' such "carrier-killers" (or cruise missile types, such as the BrahMos).

Found this video of the ESSM, Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile, engaging a drone doing Mach 5 and pulling 10G's:

Please note that the ESSM is in serial production and was specifically designed as a mid-range (medium ranged) anti-ship missile interceptor. Furthermore, it has vectored thrust and coupled with carrier-based Hawkeye and Sentry capabilities, the carrier group will have capable early warning mechanisms.

Then there is the SeaRam:

SeaRam Block1 has several modes including RF homing(home on jam/radar), Home all the way, anti-surface mode, and features fire and forget terminal IIR homing. In live-fire tests RAM was something like 96% effective."

I would love to have our existing supersonic BrahMos-1 tested against SeaSparrow and SeaRam systems. How effective it would be???

Now coming to hypersonic systems...
In future anti-missile defense isnt based anymore on missiles more likely its microwave, laser, still something that can react much faster and travel trough air quicker with lower cost rate
Can BrahMos-2 disguise such systems???

All those new systems are not a BVR. meaning unless they can be mounted on satellite or are mounted on planes that fly 24\7. thay are rather ineffective.
Missiles moving at those speeds. especially those that can travel in big numbers are highly effective.
The only effective ground based missile defense is an anti-missile.

the only eefect
