KABUL: A senior security official in Iran said Saturday that the three neighbors—Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan are cementing their cooperation to beef up security in bordering areas.

The deputy commander of Iran’s Border Guards for Operations, Brigadier General Jalal Setareh, was quoted by Iranian media outlets, as saying that the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and the army forces are also stationed along the southeastern bordering areas to reinforce security in this joint region.

Setareh stressed that Iran also enjoys cordial relations with its southeastern neighbors aimed at strengthening security in bordering areas.

As per the negotiations held between Afghan and Pakistani officials, the two countries pay due attention to their bordering areas more than before, he said.

Recently, President Ashraf Ghani’s advisor in national security affairs, Mohammad Hanif Atmar during his visit to Tehran discussed ways to strengthen ties between the two countries particularly in improving security of bordering areas.

According to Afghan officials, President Ghani will soon visit Tehran and will sign a security agreement with the Iranian government. A number of critics said the neighbors of Afghanistan including Iran and Pakistan should help the country in war on terror and as well as in maintaining law-and-order in the three neighboring countries, as joint efforts is the only way to overcome the menace of terror and bring peace and stability in the region.

Border security management coordination needs to be enhanced to control terrorism, human smuggling, narcotics and illegal trade. These measures will also lead to peace in the region and peace at a global level.
