What's new

Bonjour India festival 2013. A French attempt to strengthen"cultural ties".

Good day Jandk , you think french rule was terriblè, are you kidding me , you guys were slaves of british for literally 300 years and yet you have a problem with small french colonies along the coast. It was the french that help your kingdoms against the east indian company let alone the anglais imperial army itself.
Edit: Not trying to appear as a neocolonial racist bigot, however you monsieur need to check your facts again.

French controlled only small area, that's why they didn't get opportunity to plunder India like British. We all know what they did in Africa and elsewhere.

Most people and I am talking about people in small town which makes a big part of our population only know the name of countries like France and other European countries like Germany and UK, but they don't give particular attention to our relationship with them, and I believe with a developing nation we should invest more on people so they could learn about the outside factors and how they affect our lives in India. As for the topic, it is good that the two countries are trying to forge a better relationship (not that we have a bad relationship with them). France is one of those countries that helped us in the past, but still when I see France, I get a feeling that our relationship is purely based on business and nothing more. So maybe through these cultural events we can forge a better understanding between the two countries which is more than business partners.

when I visited Pondicherry, I saw some signboards in French language and some French cultural influence there. But when Pondicherry merged with India in 1954, local Tamil culture started to replace the French influence. But I never heard about the wines you just mentioned.

see i have roots from both sides, so i like to try new combos, try butter poulet with Hermitagge la sizeranne, its a shiraz wine goes typically great with red meat though i think its a better pairing with butter poulet and spicy indienne food for some reason.

One thing for sure, French left India with an honour unlike the stubborn Portuguese.

look i am not defending the louis french for there actions however ask the residents of the colonies pondicherry, how the rule was and then ask a native of british inde how the rule was, I am sure you know the conditions yourself, once again I am not supporting in any way or form nor legitimizing colonial rule, just stating that condition were not as worse as some people like to state. Also as far as territories go, there is a considerable amount of area that french empire rules even under the first republic, they had decent amount of territorie and all these terroitories observed the Napoleonic code, which i believe is superior to modern common law, heck we still have it today in Quebèc

To be honest though, the louis french did not have the vision nor the sinister mind that british had, they definately came with a long term plan before even entering inde unlike other european power that came to trade mostly and because of there victories, all european colonial powers lost most of their trading posts and heck some even had to pay tribute to maintain one. These folks were evil geniuses for sure until Napolèon taught them better offcourse :azn:

The colored one are not the French controlled areas but the princely states who took the help of the French to counter rival state or British. The whole 1700s was the time of rivalry between French and British to increase their influence in India, actual exploitation by British started when Bengal fell to them after mid of 1700s.

We all know, Europeans were here to exploit our resources and dump their finished goods in India to feed their industrial revolution back in Europe.

The past is very important but Lets live in the present -

All the colonials were brutal in suppressing the local population. We were ruled by the British so we despise them a great deal but France left African parts it ruled in ruins too.

Are you referring to the British or the Portuguese.

no you have a point, I kind of earlier crossed a line with the mention of colonial era rule, and yes i agree all form of colonial rule was evil whether the intentions were sincere or not. However lets not dwell in the past and hopefully inde and french relationship get better over the years, hatred will not solve any problems.

yours truly british

Interesting. I know French has been given official status in Pondicherry, I believe it is spoken in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as well.. Indo-French ties are a welcoming gesture

You have to understand unlike other european power, france was humiliated after ww2 and tried everything to maintain those territories, when the message on the wall clearly said that the winds were shifting and france refused to adjust to the new world and wanted the colonial era glory to come back and in the process committed heinous acts on locals for petty ego. The french people were broken and demoralized and even today the french military has not really recouperated and in my opinion still does not have any pride left or the proud legacy it once carried on from the emperor napolèon`s days.

Time to go offline buddy But I promise when in evening I will come back then will post lots of related things on this site. I have studied french(feels good) as well as German(tough compared to french). Have heard that Italian & Spanish are more easier to learn. Correct?
