Boeing Delivers Indian Air Force 3rd C-17 Globemaster III | AVIATIONNEWS.EU

LONG BEACH, Calif., Aug. 22, 2013 – The third Boeing [NYSE: BA] C-17 Globemaster III airlifter for the Indian Air Force (IAF) departed for India Aug. 20 from the company’s Long Beach facility.

It joins the first and second India C-17 airlifters, which arrived in June and July, respectively. Boeing is on track to deliver two more C-17s to the IAF this year and five in 2014.

In operation since 1991, the C-17 is a large, versatile military transport aircraft able to carry heavy, oversize loads long distances and land on rough and unprepared surfaces. It has been used in humanitarian and military missions around the world and recently surpassed 2.6 million flight hours.

Boeing has delivered 256 C-17s, including 222 to the U.S. Air Force and a total of 34 to Australia, Canada, India, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the 12-member Strategic Airlift Capability initiative of NATO and Partnership for Peace nations.

One C-17 every month! :hang2: IAF is probably tempted to order more.
@Abingdonboy how many are on order? And what are the chances of additional orders?

10 is the original order- 5 will be delivered in 2013 and 5 in 2014. There is a clause for 6 more units as contained in the original contract which is almost certain to he exercised. There is signifcant scope for follow on orders beyond 16 though and from what Boeing and the IAF have said they are looking to get possibly up to 22-25 C-17s by ~2017/18. The C-17 production line being in its final days will complicate the matter and hence compress timelines. As I'm sure the IAF would prefer 22-25 C-17s by ~2020 but that is not feasible. As it stands Boeing have extended the C-17's production line by just one more only up until early 2015:

So we're going to have to wait and see what orders the IAF makes in the next 18 or so months.

Thats massive airlift capacity and if true IAF will become II largest C-17 operator in the world.
offtopic: think numbers are going to go up for C-130J as well.

Who knows Pentagon & Boeing may be tempted to provide something suitable :pleasantry: for our Homegrown AWACS as well.

If it on the 707 platform, i would not be surprised as India is well accustomed to service that plane (due to our civil airlines) but i doubt they might go for an american platform .

No,,,,that should stay indigenous

And here is some thought
We are gonna go into a jv with russia on mta
why not base our larger awacs on that platform??

anyone??

and be ready for sanctions all the time:devil:

The only way a sanction will be imposed on India will be if we conduct a nuclear test .

But our nuclear gurus have revealed it explicitly that our current capability is more than required .

So no worries on that front .
