NEW DELHI: Aircraft manufacturing company Boeing on Friday admitted that it has concluded more defence deals with India than the whole of the US defence industry combined in the last fifty years.

"Yes indeed! Boeing has closed more defence deals with India than whole of the US combined in the last fifty years," James McNerney, chairman of The Boeing Company, said in a webcast which was live streamed throughout the country.

Asked about closing several deals with the government, McNerney said that the trick was to have a team in India. "The probable reason of our success is that we anticipated these deals will come and set up a team here rather than bringing the aircraft here first and the team later."

"Also the Indian military is organised, capable and they know what equipment they want hence it is easier to work with them. The series of defence deals also shows the country's commitment to keep its borders
safe especially in wake of shaky neighbours," McNerney said.

The chairman also said that the company had stopped production of the heavy lift transport aircraft C-17 Globemaster.

The announcement comes at a time when the Indian government was in requirement of three more Globemaster planes. The Boeing C-17 Globemaster is a large military transport aircraft.

"We have only one C-17 with us. Of course there are buying opportunities in the used market and the model will stay in the market for another 20 to 30 years," the chairman said.

The Indian government and the Boeing company had entered into a purchase agreement for 10 C-17 Globemaster aircraft with an option for buying six more. The deal was estimated at $4.1 billion.

Currently, the Indian Air Force's (IAF) Globemaster fleet is based out of Hindon Air Force Station near the national capital. The fleet is operated by the 'Skylords' squadron for strategic airlift assignments.

This news does not make any sense at all. Seems like some incorrect reporting with regards to the duration/period in question.

SpiceJet is trying to get back on track and catch up with IndiGo, which in August finalized an order for 250 passenger jets from Airbus, taking its total orders so far with the European manufacturer to 530 planes.

Boeing in August predicted Indian carriers will need 1,740 new planes in the next two decades. The International Air Transport Association expects the country to become the third-largest market in the world after China and the U.S. in 2031.

Thanks for the Tag. Boeing is also in talks with the Indian government to start manufacturing some major planes in India. Chinook and the Black Hawk already have part made assembled in India. It would only make natural sense to start full manufacturing (to an extent where it doesn't damage the American economy under the "cheaper manufacturing" slogan).

So somewhere along the line, Boeing will need to create a fine line. That is, how much manufacturing in India is healthy for her profits YET not getting greedy and taking American jobs way. That, I won't vote for. Disney and a few others tried this recently and they are now fighting in courts and had to halt the outsourcing immediately.

So this is good news for both, Boeing's profits and India. But it needs to be executed carefully so the American public isn't losing jobs at a whole sale level. I think people sitting in Boeing's boardroom know that. So good for India. This will create tremendous amounts of talent and aircraft manufacturing knowledge in India.

The only thing good for India is that we are building a base to manufacture high tech aircraft in association with Boeing. It had to be started somewhere. Boeing has set up the 3rd largest Asian overhaul facility of aircrafts for Air India (Mihan near Nagpur).

I agree. And also remember, they will build facilities in other places too. May be not as large as what's in India, but the business will expand. Its not their "love" for India, its the cheaper cost. In fact, your neighbor, Pakistan, makes some parts for Boeing and a couple of other American companies. Some of their smaller drones are used for Border Patrolling by the US. So its cost effectives, cheaper labor and all. India itself, outside of having cheap educated labor, doesn't have something "special" on the planet. It's the same case for many countries.

Malaysia has a huge semiconductor design and manufacturing industry (Intel, AMD, Dell, all build and manufacture there), again educated, peaceful, highly engineering focused cheaper labor is the key. Still this will allow India to get $$$$, know how and start their own industry with the talent that will leave these facilities after a few years of experience, for more money and careers offered by some Indian manufacturer. Still excellent for India.
