Chinese company starts production of AMOLED display panels at Chengdu facility

BOE Technology Group Co Ltd, a supplier of display products and solutions, on Thursday commenced mass production of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode display screens ahead of schedule at its facility in Chengdu, Sichuan province.

The Chinese company said that the sixth-generation flexible AMOLED display panels have already been delivered to more than 10 smartphone manufacturers including Huawei Technologies Co, OPPO Electronics Corp, Vivo Mobile Communication Technology, Xiaomi Corp, ZTE Corp and Nubia Technology.

BOE has so far invested 46.5 billion yuan ($7 billion) in the Chengdu production line, which is also the country's first such facility. It mainly produces display panels used in mobile products and smart wearable devices. It can turn out 48,000 glass substrate panels (at 1850mm X1500mm) every month.

The commencement of mass production indicates that Chinese companies are slowly taking center stage in the global AMOLED industry and breaking the monopoly of South Korean companies in flexible and foldable panels for high-end smartphones.

"Mass production at the Chengdu plant will greatly enhance BOE's competitiveness in high-end smartphones and mobile displays and also meet the fast-growing demand for small and medium-sized display panels," said Chen Yanshun, CEO of BOE.

Chen added the move is of great importance to the further development of the Chinese organic light emitting diode industry and the global flexible display industry. BOE has another sixth-generation flexible AMOLED line in Mianyang, Sichuan province, that is expected to start production in 2019.

Market research firm IHS Markit expects BOE to be the world's largest supplier for AMOLED display panels in 2019.

"The flexible AMOLED display brings more possibilities to a phone's appearance," said Zhang Yu, senior vice-president of BOE. He said AMOLED panels are in short supply, and the market is so big that there is virtually no competition. "We are now solving the problem of insufficient production capacity."

AMOLED technology is physically flexible with a fast response, high contrast and wide visual angles, compared with traditional liquid crystal display panels.

South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics Co currently dominates in AMOLED technology and products, accounting for a market share of around 90 percent. These panels were used in its Galaxy series of smartphones.

Statistics from industry consultancy CINNO Research showed that shipments of flexible AMOLED smartphone panels reached 55 million units last year, and will rise to 160 million pieces by the end of 2017, with an estimated annual compound growth rate of 88.2 percent up to 2020.

Industry experts expect Chinese manufacturers to eat into Samsung's market share by 2019 as they increase investment and production in the sector. "China has become the world's largest producer and consumer of mobile phones, but the flexible AMOLED display market has been dominated by South Korean companies," said John Wang, an analyst at Sigmaintell Consulting Co Ltd, a panel industry consultancy.

Wang said the AMOLED technology is the future for smartphone panels, adding the flexible display technology will play a vital role in small and medium-sized display sector.

Around 23 percent of global smartphones had AMOLED display panels last year. The figure is expected to reach 64 percent in 2021, according to Sigmaintell.

BOE starts volume production at China first 6G AMOLED fab

Rebecca Kuo, Taipei; Willis Ke, DIGITIMES

[Friday 27 October 2017]

China-based BOE Technology Group kicked off its 6G AMOLED panel production line in Chengdu, Sichuan for volume production on October 26, marking the official run of the country's first and the world's second 6G flexible AMOLED panel production line, according to company sources.

The sources said that BOE will soon ship AMOLED panels to over 10 smartphone vendors in China including Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi Technology, ZTE and Nubia, adding that its 6G AMOLED panel production line in Mianyang, also in Sichuan, will become operational in 2019.

BOE CEO Chen Yanshun said the official run of the 6G AMOLED panel line will sharply boost the firm's overall competitiveness in the panel market for high-performance smartphones and wearable devices and help to meet market demand for small to medium-sized display products, while marking a new milestone in the development of the AMOLED panel industry in China.

Chen continued that at a total investment of CNY46.5 billion (US$6.988 billion), construction of the 6G AMOLED fab kicked off in May 2015 and was completed for trial production in May 2017 before mass production in late October. The line has a monthly production capacity of 48,000 glass substrates measuring 1,850mm x 1,500mm.

BOE started to engage in the research and development of innovative OLED displays in 2002, and accumulated more than 16,000 OLED-related patents as of the end of June 2017, according to Chen.

The firm's AMOLED product lines include 5.5-inch WQHD flexible OLED panels, 7.8-inch foldable panels, 7.56-inch QHD panels, 5.5-inch FRHD all-screen OLED panels, and the world's unique 1.53-inch embedded OLED touch screen panels, according to company sources.

Global AMOLED panel shipments came to 416 million units in 2016, with 390 million used in mobile phones. In 2017, global shipments of AMOLED panels for smartphone uses will increase to 513 million units, and global production capacity for flexible AMOLED will increase sharply to 20.1 million square meters in 2020 from 1.5 million square meters in 2016, according to market sources.

Good. Almost all domestic manufacturers are already enlisted. Bring some competition to Samsung :enjoy:

I think you meant display.

Because LCD is a dying business, and most companies are in fact exiting from LCD specially at the smaller sizes.

And BOE is already the largest LCD supplier of large panels.

. .
India is better stay away from such dying business.

Again, perhaps you didn't understand what I wrote?

There are various kinds of displays, LCD is just one type of display technology.

In fact this post itself states that BOE has inaugrated an AMOLED line.

What is AMOLED?

It is Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode.

It is a totally different technology compared to LCD, and has many many benefits over LCD. That is the reason why the whole industry is shifting from LCD to OLED.

That is the reason why I'm saying that LCD is a dying business.

Within next TEN years, China BOE will surpass Samsung & LG LCD business

World LCD business, Chinese coming ~!

Perhaps LCD has remained in business for so long, that is has become synonymous with display.

This is not a LCD line. This is an AMOLED line.

BOE is already very good at LCD. AMOLED is the future.

Besides a LED TV, I still have a big bulky ancient CRT (cathode Ray Tube) TV that need at least two strong men to carry. In comparison, imagine the extreme light weight of a new TV that can be hang on a wall and rolled out like Chinese brush painting.

Amazing technology, from shot wave and long wave radio to black and white TV, colour CRT TV, LCD TV, LED TV, and possible future flexible roll-up TV. A life time experience that is worth living. 不愧活了一甲子。

I appreciate and praise the progress of Chinese display industry.

But BOE is simply not the industry leader. Samsung is far ahead in the maturity and quality of process.

Samsung has been making AMOLED screens now for many years. And their screens are leading in quality parameters like contrast ratio, yields, etc.

But I am fairly certain, that BOE will come up as a good challenger to Samsung.

"BOE, a state-owned company backed by the Beijing city government, has been working on OLEDs for more than 15 years. It acquired the critical technology in 2001 when it purchased the OLED panel operations of South Korea's Hydis Technologies, which at the time was owned by Hynix Semiconductor (now SK Hynix)"

As usual nothing homegrown in china.
Bought a south korean company with its intelligent korean engineers and put a made in china stamp.

Sorry but this is stupid argument. Since when Hynix own patents of OLED and flexible screen technology?
