Southerners like Hong Kong, Guangdong and Guangxi do drag down China's average a lot, but northerners are the much taller. Besides, China only sees a massive jump of average height in the last 2 decades among younger generations ,especially among the millennials.

The data in the Lancet study are national averages with more than 100 separate data sources all over China. Data in Beijing would be higher.

Beijing is about the average due to immigration from all over China. People from Northeast China and Shangdong province are the tallest.
