-- BMW AG said Wednesday it sold more than 400,000 BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce cars worldwide in the first three months of the year due to surging demand in China and the U.S., marking a new quarterly sales record for the German auto maker.
"We have had an outstanding first quarter and the best ever in the company's history," BMW sales chief Ian Robertson said at the New York auto show, according to a prepared statement.
"We have seen over 16% growth in the U.S. this quarter and we expect further momentum with the new BMW 3 Series Sedan on the market, as well as the introduction of the BMW X1 to the U.S. in September this year," he said.
The introduction of the X1 small sports utility vehicle to the U.S. market is expected to build upon the company's recent success in this fast-growing segment. Since the product's launch at the end of 2009, BMW has sold more than 264,000 X1 vehicles worldwide.
BMW said it sold more than 75,000 vehicles in China in the first quarter, after 58,506 in the same period last year.
BMW said will release detailed global sales data for the first quarter on April 11.
