Guys i am planning to buy second hand car (2015/2016), and i am leaning towards BMW 3 series (saloon) and Mercedes A class. If any one have experience with both cars can you tell which one is better with fuel economy and is easy to maintain/ easy on wallet.

BMW 3 is far better then Merc A class. A family member has A- class and not impressed by build quality. But I don't think Merc A-Class is in the same class as BMW 3. I would place them as follows -

Merc A - BMW 1 series
Merc C - BMW 3 series

.
Check their specs, worthiness and efficiency. I would recommend BMW 3 series due to fuel efficiency.

YES, Mercs C and BMW 3 series are better compareable.

It's question of pesonal choice. I would go for BMW 3 but then I am biased. I own a black BMW 3 series coupe and love it. It handles like a razor on ice and reliability is rock solid. I was going to replace last year but it has been so reliable that I will wait for this summer to buy another Beemer. Either a 4 series or 6 series.

First of all mileage, mileage, mileage. That's the main thing that dictates price. Now considering its 2-3 years older, it should have a millage of about 70,000 or less. Nothing higher. Secondly none of these cars are gonna be easy on the wallet. The service is what's gonna get ya. Also I've been told to stay away from secondhand mercs, BMW, or any of those luxury cars. They tend to come with a lot of issues. If you really want one, save up for a new one. My 2 cents.

Mine has now done 170k but runs like the day I bought it - well you know what I mean. Regular service, no rough driving and they will go on, on and on. To be fair same applies to MBs, Audi's. The only issue I had was last year the auto caused some problem. But is fixed now.

Ps. If money is a problem then suggest strongly you go for BMW 1 series.

What's the fuel economy you get on it?

Side note, Canada absolutely destroys cars. All the snow and then all that weird dirt mixtures they put on the roads. They rust like there's no tomorrow. Nowadays they coat the bottom, but that doesnt last long.

I will be honest I don't keep tab on it. I just fill the tank and drive. But I know it's good for the class. Last week I borrowed by brothers Audi A7 and on a round trip of 400 miles it used just over £90 which was far heavier then my car.

Cars are very nicely maintained here in Europe and most of the people use for it for work purposes. I am only concerned about the reliability and fuel economy since i am gonna commute quite much.

In my family we have Mercedez S- class coupe, Audi A7 fastback, Audi A4 coupe, BMW 3 coupe and Mini Cooper. All are reliable and delight in their own ways. I of course tilt toward Beemers. They handle better.

I would suggest BMW 1 series and if your budget stretches go for BMW 3 series. You will not have any regrets. But just a warning. If you buy second hand and go for the most reliable car in the world but the example you buy is tired out 'dog' then expect trouble. When buying second hand car it's all about history. If you a buy a car from a middle aged nun you can expect the car to have been driven with gentle gloves and taken care of. On other hand if you buy a car that was used as a taxi then don't be surprised if it gives you grief at every corner.

.
