17 killed in bomb attack on Pakistan gas station

By Waqar Hussain (AFP) – 52 minutes ago

LAHORE, Pakistan — A massive bomb blast by suspected Islamic militants at a gas station in Pakistan's central Punjab province Tuesday killed at least 17 people and wounded 75 others, senior officials said.

"Now the death toll is 17. We have 75 wounded, three of them are in a critical condition," city administration official Naseem Sadiq told AFP by telephone.

Regional police chief Aftab Cheema confirmed the attack in Faisalabad city, the country's textile-making capital.

"It was a car bomb blast. The explosive was planted in a car. We are investigating whether a suicide bomber was involved or not," Cheema said.

Television pictures showed the station had been reduced to a pile of bricks and gnarled metal as rescue officials worked to remove rubble from the scene to search for survivors and ambulance vehicles ferried the injured away.

City commissioner Tahir Husain told private Geo television that rescue officials were heaving bricks and metal away to save those trapped.

"There are some people trapped under the building rubble. We have deployed our cranes and machinery to rescue them very soon," he added.

Husain told private TV channel Waqt that no suicide attacker was involved.

"It was not a suicide attack. It was a planted bomb blast. The bomb exploded near the gas cylinders that triggered a bigger blast," he said.

Husain said that the attack could have targeted government buildings close to the gas station site, some of which he said were damaged in the blast.

Pakistan has been wracked by violence, mostly targeting security officials.

Some 4,000 people have been killed in bomb blasts, suicide and gun attacks blamed on Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters since Pakistan troops stormed a militant mosque in Islamabad in July 2007.

On Saturday at least one person was killed and another wounded when a bomb exploded inside a house in Pakistan's biggest city of Karachi.

Faisalabad city is near the home of a Christian government minister who was buried Friday after being killed in a hail of bullets in Islamabad last week over his opposition to the country's strict Islamic blasphemy laws.

His assassination sparked international outrage and stoked concern about rampant militancy and rising extremism throughout the nuclear-armed nation, a fractious ally in the US-led war in Afghanistan.

RIP to the dead..

But
What the hell is going on in Pakistan??

From outsiders pov, it looks like terrorists are creating mayhem with impunity

This reminds me how once we too were victims of terrorism. Bomb blasts every now and then in our places of worship, markets, trains etc. Fortunately we are better now.

RIP to dead and condolences to family members.

Such things happen when you hire clowns to save yourself from terrorists. Unfortunately Pakistan is the perfect example of this case. We are expecting clowns to save ourselves from terrorists. And this includes both inefficient intelligence agencies like ISI, IB and an idiot like Rehman Malik.

BBC News - 'At least 20 dead' in car bomb in Faisalabad, Pakistan

At least 20 people have been killed and many injured after a car bomb exploded at a gas station in the Pakistani city of Faisalabad.

Officials said the device caused several gas cylinders at the station to explode, destroying cars and buildings in the area.

Television footage showed collapsed buildings and burnt-out cars.

Some unconfirmed reports said the explosion took place near the offices of Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI.

'Trapped'

Officials said the death toll may rise as people were removed from the damaged structures.

"There are some people trapped under the building rubble. We have deployed our cranes and machinery to rescue them very soon," commissioner Tahir Husain told Pakistan's private Geo television.

He said the "probability is very strong" that the blast was caused by a militant attack but added that investigations were still ongoing.

"We heard the explosion from the gas station, the earth moved as in an earthquake, and there was thick smoke all around," a security guard at the nearby office of Pakistan International Airlines said.

Faisalabad, a city some 160 miles (260km) south of Islamabad has rarely been targeted by militants and is a key hub for Pakistan's textile industry.
