Gandhi was an ideological man, his philosophy pierces the heart as well as the mind. Gandhi's message was not provincial, his message was transnational and his works, writings transcends the notion of India and Indian. He has written this that he wanted to build a culture and empassioned to remind the world of human inclusivity.
Godse murdered him, Gandhiji, because Gandhi's views did not meet his and his collaborator's perpetrators. The fatalism in your view is that you believe that Gandhi would have led to the demise of India, what makes you make such a blanket statement? It was Gandhi's diplomatic leverage, counseled with the fact that the man was an educated legal professional, brought down the British Raj. Something that neither the Mughals or the Marathas ever accomplished through militancy.
Men such as Gandhi cannot be easily compared to ordinary politicians who have basilar instincts. Gandhi stands on the same pedestal as ideologues such as Voltaire, Locke, the Buddha, Jesus Christ, Guru Nanak who focused on internal and spiritual embodiment rather than malicious militancy. That is the dichotomy between men such as Gandhiji and men such as Godse.
