Based on the ‘Sulabh Model’ design, 200 biogas plants of 35 to 60 cum capacity have been constructed by Sulabh in different states of the country so far.

One cubic foot biogas is produced from the human excreta of per person per day. Human excreta based biogas contains 65-66% methane, 32-34% carbon dioxide and, rest the hydrogen sulphide and other gases in traces.

Methane is the only combustible constituent, which is utilized in different forms of energy. Its calorific value is 24 MJ/cum or about 5000 Kcal/cum. A one thousand cft. (30 cum) of biogas is equivalent to 600 cft. of natural gas, 6.4 gallons of butane, 5.2 gallons of gasoline or 4.6 gallons of diesel oil. Biogas is utilized for cooking, lighting through mantle lamps, electricity generation and body warming during winter. Cooking is the most efficient use of biogas. Biogas burners are available in a wide ranging capacity from 8 cft to 100 cft biogas consumption per hour. It burns with a blue flame and without soot and odour. The biogas mantle lamp consumes 2-3 cft per hour having illumination capacity equivalent to 40 W electric bulbs at 220 volt.

Government to set up bio gas, coal-bed methane filling plants soon - The Economic Times

NEW DELHI: The Commerce and Industry Ministry has given permission to set up 16 bio gas-based and three coal-bed methane-based natural gas filling plants to encourage use of alternative fuel in the country.

Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also said that Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organisation (PESO), which is under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), is closely associated with the developmental activities for introduction of hydrogen as an alternative fuel.

She said that PESO has granted permission to Indian Oil CorporationBSE -1.07 % to set up hydrogen manufacturing and dispensing facilities in their R&D centre at Faridabad, and to University of Petroleum and Energy Studies at Gurgaon for establishment and development of hydrogen production and dispensing facilities.


"Further, 16 biogas-based and three coal-bed methane-based natural gas filling plants are to be established sooner. PESO has already given permission for these," she said at the 'Urja Sangam' here.

The minister also said that promotion of energy efficient technologies would help India reduce its high import bill.

"Many of such technologies could help energy intensity of India's GDP growth by up to one per cent per year," she said.

Sitharaman said that huge oil and gas reserves are present in the country and "if we can tap that, it will be possible to produce more than 20 million cubic meters a day of natural gas by 2025".

She said that despite being a net crude oil importer, India has also become a net exporter of petroleum products by investing in refineries designed for exports.

"There is a big opportunity for India as demand for primary energy in India is likely to increase three-fold by 2035 to 1,500 million tonnes of oil equivalent from 563 million tonnes of oil equivalent in 2012," she said.

"So 60 per cent of the prognosticated reserves of 20,000 MMT are yet to be harnessed in this country. Oil and gas contribute about 39.2 per cent of the primary energy consumption," the minister said.

Further, she said that investments worth USD 70 billion are expected in the oil and natural gasBSE 0.10 % sector in the current 12th five year plan.

To ensure energy security, she said strategic storage of crude oil and LPG is very important and would serve as a cushion in response to the external supply disruptions.

Government has set up a total storage of about 5.33 MMT crude oil at three locations including Visakhapatnam and Mangalore.

On exploration, she said the Commerce and Industry Ministry is looking at various options to help Indian investors and companies go abroad in search of good prospective assets.

At least 30 kilograms of plastic can be found from the stomach of every cow or buffalo which dies in India, Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said here today, adding that a 'plastic carry-bag free India' campaign would be soon launched.

"The problem with India is we have laws but we don't implement them," he said while interacting with walkers at KBR Park here as one of them expressed concern over plastic waste.

He noted that plastic bags below 40 microns are banned and rag pickers do not take them as they cannot be recycled and are ultimately strewn all over the place.

"Every day, 15,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated in the country. Only 9000 tonnes (of the total) get collected. So we have plastic heaps...all over the villages also. They will remain there for hundreds of years like carbon dioxide", the Minister said.

Researchers developed a relatively low-temperature process to convert certain kinds of plastic waste into liquid fuel as a way to re-use plastic bags and other products.

Among the plastic waste is the common polymer, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which is used to make many types of container, medical and laboratory equipment, computer components and, of course, plastic bags.

Recycling initiatives are in place in many parts of the world, but much of the polyethylene waste ends up in landfill, dispersed in the environment or in the sea.

In other words, for every kilogram of waste plastic they could produce 700 grams of liquid fuel. The by-products were combustible gases and wax.

Rajasthan enacts law to ban camel slaughter - The Hindu

The Rajasthan Assembly has passed a law that bans the slaughter, trading and unauthorised transportation of camels. Camel had been declared as the State animal last year though there was some opposition from the communities whose livelihoods depend on camel.

The Rajasthan Camel (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Bill, 2015 also makes causing injury to camel punishable. Camel slaughter is punishable for up to five years and monetary fine.

Allaying apprehensions raised by the Opposition and the BJP members over some provisions of the Bill, including piercing of nose which could be punishable under intentional injury, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Lal Saini said rituals and traditional practices would not be made punishable.

Mr. Saini said that the number of camels in Rajasthan had sharply declined to 3.26 lakh as had in the adjoining states including Gujarat.

According to the statement of objectives of the Bill, camel is an integral part of the desert eco-system of the State and has played a very important role in the survival of human population in adverse desert conditions. Presently, Camel is presently endangered and in need for initiation of sincere efforts for its conservation and protection, due to an alarming steep population decline observed in the recent past.

Several cases of intentional killings of camel and its progeny have come to light. It has also been observed that a large number of camels are transported or carried out of Rajasthan to other States for the purpose of slaughter. The existing laws are not sufficient to tackle this problem. Agriculture being the main stay of our economy, camel as a working animal is also the backbone of our agricultural and village economic structure, it says.

Aged camels, even when they cease to be capable of yielding milk or working as draught animal can no longer be said to be useless or unfit. In order to protect and improve the natural environment by minimising dependence on chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and by using natural and soil friendly manure generated as a biological phenomenon by these camelus animals, as also to have compassion for such useful living creatures as envisaged in Article 51A (g) of the Constitution, the slaughtering of these animals needs to be strictly prohibited.

Common consensus needed for anti-cow slaughter bill: Rajnath Singh - The Times of India

INDORE: Considering the requests of the saints at religious programme, Union home minister Rajnath Singh supported the idea to ban cow slaughter nationally and assured to take efforts for creating common consensus on bringing anti-cow slaughter bill in Parliament.

Rajnath, who was in Indore on Sunday to participate in a religious programme of Jain community, clarified that bringing such law would not be easy as present NDA government is struggling to pass other important bill in absence of clear majority in Rajya Sabha.

"Such bill can be introduce only with common consensus and we will try for it," said Singh adding that previous NDA government led by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had introduce a bill in Parliament to ban cow slaughter, but the bill was not cleared by the Parliament.

Supporting the call for banning cow slaughter, Singh said state like Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, ruled by BJP for years, have already enacted a law against cow slaughter and now BJP government in Maharashtra has also introduce law in this regard. "The anti cow slaughter bill of Maharashtra, which was pending for long, was approved by home ministry and sent for final approval of president without any delay," said Singh adding that they believe cow death should be stopped in the country and urges people to form a common consensus on the issue.

Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that killing a cow is equivalent to killing a human. "We already have law against cow slaughter, we will make law more strict and legally killing a cow would be made as serious as killing a human," said Chouhan adding that not even killing, eating and transportation of cow meat would be a serious offence.

BJP lead state government had amended the Madhya Pradesh Prohibition of slaughter of cow-progeny act in 2012. The amendment had puts the responsibility of proving the prosecution wrong on the accused in cow slaughter case.

7 animal smugglers held in Raj; 8 cows, 35 buffaloes rescued | Zee News

Jaipur: Seven animal smugglers were arrested and eight cows and thirty-five buffaloes were rescued from Alwar and Bharatpur areas of the state in separate incidents, police said today.


Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted a truck at Shahjahanpur toll plaza, officer Vikas Kumar said.

However, the truck did not stop and was chased by the police team which was successful in nabbing the three accused, Kumar said.

During checking, police found eight cows were being illegally transported and rescued them, he said, adding, the three are identified as Sadik alias Sonu (26), Naseem (19), and Sriganganagar (22).

In another incident, Rajkumar, Yonus, Rahees, and Shivir were arrested for smuggling twenty-three buffaloes in Bharatpur.

Traders to resume buffalo slaughter - The Hindu

Buffalo slaughter will resume in Maharashtra from Wednesday, after almost a month-long self-imposed ban by traders protesting against the State’s ban on slaughter of bulls and bullocks.

Cow slaughter has been banned in the State since 1976.

As a mark of solidarity towards their associates who sell bull meat — violation of the ban is punishable by five years imprisonment by a newly amended law — traders selling buffalo meat, which is permissible under law, boycotted activities across Maharashtra.

The police department of Malegaon in Maharashtra has asked farmers and owners of cows and bullocks to submit photographs of their animals with details in view of the new law that bans beef trade in the state.

According to Mahesh Sawai, Deputy Superintendent of police, "The purpose is to carry out a census and keep a record. Besides, this will help to verify mattes if someone feeds us wrong information about pet animals or animals working in the field.

We are keeping the photographs for verification purposes only. If someone alleges that some illegal activity has taken place and if the owner has a photo, it will be easy to establish the truth. We have conveyed the message to the residents of

Malegaon, including animal traders. We have also asked them to register their pet animals with the Malegaon civic corporation."

The attempt is a precursor to the possible introduction of photo identity cards for cattle that would carry essential information about the animal, such as its sex, colour, height and length of horns. “The photo ID would be difficult to falsify,” Sawai explained.

Not only that, as the Indian Express reported recently, the Haryana government had decided to extend the Unique Identification Authority of India format with the introduction of "Special Identification Tags" with unique identification numbers for Haryana cows.

Every cow will have a 12-digit UID number and an ID card will be fixed as tags around its neck.

“Not only Muslims, but all Hindus are also being asked to submit the details of the cows and bullocks they possess. But there are many Muslims who domesticate animals without any intention of consuming it. These records will prove that Muslims don’t buy cows and bullocks just for slaughtering and it will help to defuse communal tension between Hindus and Muslims in the city,” explained Additional Superintendent of police Sunil Kadasne.
