@Ayush @chak de INDIA @Indischer @levina @scorpionx

Have you guys watched the documentary called "Caste system: The darker side of India"?

The people they interviewed, especially in the rural areas. I mean, my god, a lot of the upper castes in throughout India, like Rajputs, or Brahmins in Bihar, Reddies in Andhra, Upper castes in Tamil Nadu and Kerala had no compunction i saying in front of the camera that they will never use the same utensils as a Dalit, that Dalits are inferior, and if the Dalits opposed it, they have right to punish them.

No exaggeration, these people even put the KKK to shame :(

I know that affirmative action reduces meritocracy, and every one of you is against reservation, I can understand now why Dalits would want it.

The caste system is so insidious, that a Chamar would never marry a Bhangi. :'(

Sorry to sound so pessimistic, but how do Indians claim to a major power when there is a mini Jim Crow going on in the interiors of India?

And the Matrimonial ads made me physically sick. :(

It's a question of misplaced priorities really. The Government could just as well have taken a hardline stance against the caste system at the stroke of independence. What is socialism after all, if not the idea of collective ownership of the State. But no, 65 years of State patronage to the caste system has made it well-nigh 'untouchable' now.

I am still in favour of criminalizing any reference and discrimination thereby due to the caste system.

Problem is . . .who will risk it?

mayawati did it in UP and you know what happened next. lost the state elections and not even a single seat in lok sabha elections.

If this Government so chooses, it can do it. But yes, the risk is a collective withdrawal of support from many caste groupings. But isn't that why we need leaders? To make hard decisions for the greater good that ordinary folk are incapable of taking.

It needs a tectonic shift in urbanisation, economic growth and education.

Even in Urban areas you still have matrimonial ads narrowing down caste.

The point is, the rural part points to a stasis in time. The Urban areas, while there may still be prejudice, is volatile and has a more open outlook.

Its too late now bhai, should have been done soon after the Independence.

though we have a very . . .very narrow chance of success that too after Modi's 5-10 years of successful administration.

like i or not but eradicating caste system is not on our priority list as of now.

The problem with matrimonials is that each caste and subcaste has also developed it's own culture, being mutually exclusive for so many centuries.. Many a time, marrying within the same caste from the same region is simply to ensure that the next generation has a good shot at picking the traditions and culture of their ancestors.

Not to sound offensive,

But I find that it puts up silos in terms of gene migration and weakens social cohesion.

Eradicating the caste system was never a priority for our politicians. It sits very well with their machinations to have a loyal vote base.
