BANGLADESH Biman has always been one of the worst airlines in the world, but according to recent reports it was ranked second.
The report published by SKYTRAX, a web-based airline and airport rating and review platform, on last Wednesday.
SKYTRAX released the rankings based on stars - with the best rating from "five stars" to the "worst" being one star. Among 21 other airlines, Biman was rated two stars, one of the second worst airlines in the world. The SKYTRAX website says, "A 2-star airline rating signifies an inconsistent or lower quality product and/or front-line Staff Service for the onboard and home-base airport environments." Other two-star airline ratings included Iran Air, Syrian Air and Air Italy. North Korea's Koryo Air was the only one to be ranked worst with one star. ANA (All Nippon Airways) of Japan, Asiana Airways of South Korea, and Singapore Airlines were among the few to receive a five-star rating.
SKYTRAXIS a globally recognised airline rating system since 1999, classifies airlines by the quality of their front-line product and staff service standards. The Star Ratings are recognized as a global Benchmark of airline standards. Biman Bangladesh Airlines, which received a customer rating of 5/10, was reviewed on the website to have a "totally disorganized" check-in system. Biman operates flights to 22 international destinations, most of which are loss-making ones. According to previous reports, the national flag carrier incurred a loss of Tk 5.94 billion in 2011-12 fiscal year and Tk 1.91 billion in financial year 2012-13.
The airline has long had an ill reputation for notorious scheduling, lack of organisational skills and poor customer service. Passengers who have used Dhaka airport often find themselves waiting for hours in long queues for collection of luggage.
