Bhoja Air Flight crashes on final approach to Islamabad Airport.

But bomb blasts normally happen at high altitude to cause maximum damage, and if that had happened the Debris must have been strewn across tens of miles.
This one is limited to a square kilometer.

You are right..that is the best time since the pressure in the cabin is the highest. You said it had lined up for landing and some other says it was very close to the runway so if it just fell to the ground there could be a good chance of major portions of the fuselage being intact. However, a bomb could have cripple the plane and put it into a steep dive ...The pics suggest smaller pieces of debris which causes the confusion.

Older 737s had a problem with the rudder as well causing them to be stuck in one direction causing a rudder hard-over..this could have put the plane into a nose dive ...this explains the smaller pieces of debris as well since the impact would be nose first...

The front potion of the fuselage was pretty much the largest single piece. And from that altitude nose dive seems improbable.

Latest updates:

[2259 PST] Bodies of the flight crash victims have been moved to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

[2245 PST] The Emergency Response Center of PIA has been started working, says PIA

[2237 PST] Civil Aviation Authority says that victims’ relatives will be transported to Islamabad without any charges.

[2236 PST] Bhoja Air spokesman says that a plane will be ready at 7 am to bring relatives of the air crash victims to Islamabad, Dawn news reports.

[2231 PST] According to Dawn News, Black Box of the crashed plane has been found.

Earlier reports: Private television channels reported that all hospitals in Islamabad and in the nearby city of Rawalpindi had been put on high alert after the crash.

The Boeing 737 carrying 127 passengers and crew from Karachi was destined for Islamabad, initial reports by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said.

Witnesses close to the Bahria Town residential complex near the airport said emergency vehicles could be seen in the area.

Violent rain and windstorm was lashing parts of the capital around the same time as the crash, said an aviation official, adding that lightening might have caused the plane to catch fire.

Torn fragments of the fuselage, including a large section bearing the airline’s logo, could be seen in television footage.

Rescue crews combed through the charred wreckage of the plane as passengers’ belongings – clothes, shoes, jewellery – ripped from their luggage, lay strewn on the ground.

AFP adds: Saifur Rehman, an official from the police rescue team said the plane came down in Hussain Abad village, about three kilometres (two miles) from the main Islamabad highway.

“Fire erupted after the crash. The wreckage is on fire, the plane is completely destroyed. We have come with teams of firefighters and searchlights and more rescuers are coming,” Rehman told a private television channel.

“There is no chance of any survivors. It will be only a miracle. The plane is totally destroyed,” police officer Fazle Akbar said.

An airport source said that flight number B4-213 of Bhoja Airline was due to land at Islamabad airport at 6:50 pm (1350 GMT) but lost contact with the control tower at 6:40 pm and crashed shortly afterwards before reaching the runway.

Plane crashes are relatively rare in Pakistan, where inter-city travel is most efficient by air.

Bhoja Air re-launched domestic operations with a fleet of five 737s in March, according to newspaper reports, when the airline was planning to start flights connecting Karachi, Sukkur, Multan, Lahore and Islamabad.

Bhoja had been grounded in 2000 by the Civil Aviation Authorities amid financial difficulties, the reports said.

The worst aviation tragedy on Pakistani soil came in July 2010 when an Airbus 321 passenger jet operated by the private airline Airblue crashed into hills overlooking Islamabad while coming in to land after a flight from Karachi.

All 152 people on board were killed in the accident, which occurred amid heavy rain and poor visibility.

The deadliest civilian plane crash involving a Pakistani jet came in 1992 when a PIA Airbus A300 crashed into a cloud-covered hillside on its approach to the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, killing 167 people.

What is the significance of finding the blackbox? What does it contain too? and how is it useful?

...........
Headwind, crosswind, tailwind, downwind.

If you notice, all those words indicate the directions in which airflow is occurring. Windshear is something else.

........ Do not try to protect Boeing here since you have an American flag on your avatar. If it was Boeing's fault then we will have to sue it..........

If Boeing is at fault, please go ahead and sue. Let's wait for the final investigation report before flying off the handle, shall we?

22 cadets waiting for their parents at their graduation is perhaps the cruelest of all the losses this tragedy has caused.

At least 118 people were killed on Friday in a crash of a Boeing-737 passenger jet outside the Pakistani capital Islamabad, tentatively blamed on bad weather, Dawn.com Pakistani television said.

Earlier it was reported that 116 perished in the crash.

The preliminary body count was announced by the Pakistan Defense Ministry. The plane was carrying 127 passengers, according to the country’s Civil Aviation Authority, and crashed in a populated area, which means the total death toll will probably be higher.

Several houses were engulfed in flames after the crash, Twitter user Khalid Khan wrote, citing a rescue worker.

The flight was operated by Bhoja Air company, which was closed in 2000, but resumed operations in March, Pakistani Geo Television said.

The jet was flying from Karachi and due to land in the city of Rawalpindi, which houses the Benazir Bhutto International Airport. The plane was landing in poor visibility due to a thunderstorm in the area, Pakistani television said.

What is the significance of finding the blackbox? What does it contain too? and how is it useful?

It contains flight data, like altitude, pressure readings, speed, etc etc.

The Voice data recorder contains the conversations in the cockpit, including one with the ATC.

And black box i not actually black.

If you notice, all those words indicate the directions in which airflow is occurring. Windshear is something else.

Yes, and downwind means when you go below a cloud, the high pressure forces the plane down. that is why it is the norm to circle around the cloud by atleast a distance of 10-20 km depending on cloud.

And that is very cruel indeed. A day of joy turned into misery fo the young cadets.

Tragic loss indeed....... will have to wait for the Blackbox to truly ascertain what the exact cause........ would be of little solace for the family members though

Why o why, tragedy after tragedy, Pakistan really does stand strong against alot of storms!

Earthquake, floods, Airblue crash, this one, Siachen tragedy, Karachi killings, and a whole lot.

May Allah have mercy on all of us.

The report will put the blame on the pilot (although pilot does seem to be at a little bit at fault), in a 50 page report. Nothing new or different will come out.

Most of the bodies have been recovered now, the debris has not been touched, the CAA officials will have a look at it to find traces of fire and fuel levels.

A special flight PK-300 will go from Karachi to Isl tomorrow morning 7:15 to take the family members.

Alot of tragedies occurred, a 20 day old couple, 22 proud parents of cadets, a whole 5 member family, alot of grief.

That is not what windshear is.

Windshear is sudden, intense and unpredictable turbulence associated with a wide variety of conditions and is therefore not what you describe "downwind" as (perhaps you mean "downdraft"?). Modern aircraft now have Predictive Wind Shear (PWS) warning systems for this very reason. For planes without them, some conditions are red flags, such as:

Indicated airspeed variations in excess of 15 kts; Groundspeed variations; Vertical-speed excursions of 500 fpm or more; Pitch attitude excursions of five degrees or more; Glideslope deviation of one dot or more; Heading variations of 10 degrees or more; Unusual autothrottle activity or throttle lever position.

It requires an alert crew to avoid danger if these signs are present, singly or together in any combination.

Many airports will also have a ground based Low-level Wind Shear Alert System (LLWAS) too.

a terrible tragedy, my heart goes out to the grieving families and fellow PK members
