China's naval chief told a visiting US Navy officer on Monday that Beijing "will never give up halfway" the construction of its islands in the South China Sea.

Admiral Wu Shengli, commander of the People's Liberation Army Navy, also told Admiral John Richardson, US chief of naval operations, that the Chinese Navy has made "sufficient preparations" to deal with any sovereignty infringement or provocation.

Despite negative factors, Beijing is still willing to peacefully resolve disputes via negotiations and "manage and control crisis through rules and mechanisms", Wu said.

Washington has militarily pressured Beijing this year by sending military ships and planes to approach or intrude on Chinese territorial space in the South China Sea.

Wu said any attempt to intimidate China by flexing military muscle "will only backfire".

Beijing will "advance and complete island and reef construction as planned", no matter which country or individual pressures China to do otherwise, and "the level of our defense on these islands and reefs depends on the threats facing us", Wu said.

Richardson began his first visit to China on Sunday and will stay until Wednesday.

He told Wu in Beijing on Monday that he is ready to join hands in boosting trust and friendship to achieve lasting development of ties between the two navies, militaries and countries.

Fan Jishe, a US researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the US "has played a negative role in the South China Sea disputes, and its proactive engagement in the Asia-Pacific region has aggravated conflicts".

Zuo Xiying, an international studies specialist at Renmin University of China, said the South China Sea has become the forefront of China-US competition, and "it would be a good thing if they reinforce strategic communication and formulate more rules accepted by both".

Su Ge, president of the China Institute of International Studies, told the World Peace Forum in Beijing over the weekend that "although cooperation between Beijing and Washington cannot end all the issues in the world, not a single major issue could be resolved if the two sides walk into full-scale confrontation".

On Monday, Chinese Air Force spokesman Shen Jinke said the PLA Air Force recently conducted a combat readiness patrol in the South China Sea, including sending its H-6K bombers to patrol around Huangyan Island.

Such combat readiness patrols in the South China Sea "will continue on a regular basis", Shen said.

Meanwhile, a navigation alert issued on Monday at the website of China's Maritime Safety Administration said military activities will be conducted from Tuesday to Thursday in designated waters in the South China Sea.

The alert gave coordinates to define the designated area in which entry by other vessels will be prohibited. The area is southeast of Hainan Island.

That's the minimum. The normal is set only when China takes back its own lands and completes the national territorial sovereignty.

The message being told to the master, instead of the little countries, is a better way. Talking to the US directly is enough; no need to take PH seriously or as a party.

After the ruling, PH is no longer a party. It is an invader.

If these puppet countries have no independent foreign policy, I think it's only appropriate for China to discuss issues relating to them with their master (USA).

No independent foreign policy, show them no respect.

If China's competition, i.e. USA, hates what China is doing, then China knows they are on the right track. USA is never going to give away its power without making a fuss. China must stay away from obvious traps set by US, yet still stand its ground when challenged. The rest of the World only respects power so China must build it and brush off criticisms. The criticisms will eventually stop when China builds the power to eject USA from Asia.

Exactly.

If you want to be a great power, clashes between great powers are part and parcel of the game.

If you can't handle the heat, then don't bother getting into the game.

Once a country expands its power, it will inevitably lead to butting heads with another power. This will happen in economics, finance, diplomacy, military, sports.

Rio Olympics will be another arena where the US and China clash in just a couple of weeks for number 1 position.

China thinks it has accumulated enough power to stand up for itself and not back down to the empire.

Trust me, all Chinese artificial islands building is to setup ADIZ of SCS and PLAN nuclear subs base in SCS ... so the working won't stop. I believe BeiJing even preparing for war to finish the project in SCS.

BeiJing is already prepared for war. They are just warning the crowd to back off.

All the equipment and infrastructure is in place for ADIZ. It is as simple as just going active, while now it is just monitoring.

SCS is to protect China from enemy sub attacks.

These waters are actively monitored subsurface.

SCS is not just about those islands or their development.

China has placed vast infrastructure there and going to add many more defensive layers.

The strategy is to ensure peace and security.
