Bear Baiting Protest
Of all the ways in which bears are mistreated around the world, the medieval sport of bear baiting must be the most barbaric and obscene. The setting of pit bull terriers against bears inflicts extreme suffering on both animals.
We need your help to stop this cruelty. Please call or email Pakistan's Amabassador to the United States.
This activity, which was once widespread in Europe, is now only found rural parts of Pakistan
Bear baiting has been illegal in Pakistan for more than 100 years, but WSPA's first investigation, undertaken in 1993, found evidence of 80 different contests involving 300 bears. Pakistan wildlife expert Inayat Chaudry, who undertook the survey, uncovered for the first time a network of hunters, wildlife dealers, gypsy bear owners and land owners which enabled bear baiting to thrive. And he revealed how the bears, whose teeth and claws were removed, were virtually defenseless against an onslaught from as many as eight dogs in one day
Thanks to WSPA supporters around the world who helped us in an international campaign to stop bear baiting, President Musharraf of Pakistan issued a Decree in 2001 calling for bear baiting to be banned. All bears used in baiting events were to be confiscated and sent to the bear sanctuary built by WSPA in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province.
Yet, while bear baiting events have dropped substantially over the past 3 years, our most recent investigation revealed a resurgence in the blood sport. Over 20 bear baiting events took place last year. On numerous occasions in the past two years, WSPA investigators in Pakistan have provided hard evidence that bear baiting is still taking place. WSPA has repeatedly urged the relevant authorities to take swift action and confiscate the bears involved. We need your help. Please help WSPA's campaign to save Pakistan's bears from cruel bear baiting events by writing to the Pakistan authorities.
