Deal inked to purchase 10 locomotives from S. Korea

Dhaka, May 17 (UNB) – The government on Thursday signed an agreement to purchase 10 locomotives from South Korea.

The Bangladesh Railway signed the deal with Hyundai Rotem Company of South Korea at Rail Bhaban in presence of Railways Minister Mujibul Haque.

Hyundai Rotem Company of Korea will supply the locomotives at a cost ofTk 297, 63, 30,560 ( 297crore, 63 lakh, 30 thousand and 560 thousand).

K W AngKyun Yoon, director of Hyundai Rotem Company and Additional Director General of Bangladesh Railway Md. Shamsuzzaman signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides.

The minister said that the 10 locomotives will be purchased within 24 months while a deal will be signed to purchase 20 more.

Besides, the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase on Wednesday approved a total of 10 procurement proposals, including one to import 70 metre-gauge diesel electric locomotives from South Korea.

He also said that there was a previous deal with Korea to buy 250 coaches which will be brought by July 2019.

A total 80 railway stations will be reopened within several months. Already 60 stations have been reopened, which were shut during the tenure of the BNP government, said the minister.

“Revolutionary changes will be brought in the rail sector. Progress will be visible within 2-3 years,” said the minister.

We should get ToT for every one of these deals. Both locomotives as well as manufacturing coaches.

When the Koreans (Hyundai Rotem) bought these locomotives from the US in the 80's (these were GM design locomotives made for meter gauge markets), they did not move an inch without getting ToT for manufacturing them locally in South Korea. The number was a lot less then 70 locomotives, as I recall reading that.

Given the pathetic condition of our railway workshops and lack of skilled man power, I think those idiot could not do anything even if they got any ToT. All of our railway workshop be it Saidpur, Parbatipur or Pahartali are in a very bad condition. Plus where is the Bangladeshi equivalent of Hyundai? We have indigenous Automobile manufacturing company just by name. At first we have to make our raiway workshops a vibrant place of coach repair, coach manufacturing, engine repair, establish a motor vehicle company, establish backward linkage industry, then we will have confidence to ask for ToT. But sadly things are moving very slow.

Lol yeah, ToT just will happen for a 0 - 1 patent filing country....with less science output per capita than the worst parts of Africa. Cool story. Now open wide beggar....everyone wants what little hard earned RMG slave money you could save up....and what your slaves in middle east sent you.

You can't even make basic industrial goods (like friggin nails, rivets and fasteners) at any feasible economic rate, forget anything mechanical...your men are useless (case in point you and the rest of the BD STRONK posse), your women can at least stitch in sweatshops with the margins afforded (through global feelz charity) by their country being a basket case (LDC)....but nothing of worth past that to try something grander.
