Battle for Democracy Not Easy

Dubai - May 03, 2007

1. Islamabad May 3, 2007: Former Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto has said that the battle for democracy has not been an easy one but "I have never wavered in my commitment to democracy".

2. "I believe that the restoration of democracy is critical to the future direction of Pakistan and to the South Asian Region".

3. She was speaking at the signing ceremony of her autobiography in Dubai Thursday afternoon. The autobiography she said had been refurbished to share with a new generation her life as a Muslim woman in a largely Muslim country.

4. The tragedies, the triumphs, the turbulence in Pakistani society mirror my life as a woman, a political activist and as a Muslim, she said.

5. She said that as a woman she felt a special responsibility towards women everywhere. As Prime Minister I opened up job and credit opportunities for women in the country, she said adding, "My political struggle became a treatise of Islam and the rights of women"

6. Long before terrorism or religious extremism became part of the international discourse, she confronted those forces in Pakistan, she said.

7. The former Prime Minister said that the burgeoning movement for women's rights empowered and emboldened her. "I had always been inspired by the example of Bibi Khadija, the wife of the Holy Prophet of Islam, who was a working woman and the first to give witness to the revelation of the Holy Quran".

8. But above all, in England and America I saw the awesome power of the people changing policies and changing history, she said.

9. Speaking of her personal ordeal she said that she lost her two brothers who were both victims of political assassination and her husband spent eleven and a half years of our married life behind prison walls.

10. "I was imprisoned for almost six years as was my Mother. We were hunted, hounded and exposed to psychological warfare to break our spirit. Our faith in God, the people of our country and the righteousness of our cause sustained us through the bitter days and nights", she said.

11. Recalling her last meeting with her father in the Jail she said "When I took my leave of him from the dark death cell in which the tyrants had imprisoned him, I promised to keep alive his dream of a democratic Pakistan".

12. "Since then I have never wavered in my commitment to democracy. I raised my children as a single parent coping with the demands of a family, a political career and litigation. As a Mother, I suffered the most when I had to leave my children when they were small. I had shifted them to London and then Dubai while I continued to live in Pakistan for a while".

13. The former Prime Minister said that she did not choose this life. It chose her, she said. "It was never my goal to be a political leader". And if this life was her destiny then she embraced it due to circumstances beyond her control, she said.

14. Paying tributes to her father she said that Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was a reformer who dedicated himself to the freedom and social emancipation of the people of Pakistan. "He taught me to be proud of my religion Islam, a religion that proclaimed the equality of men and women".

15. She said that when she returned to Pakistan after completing her studies, an army coup took place. "We did not know during that long dark night of the coup whether we would live or die".

16. Following is the text of her full speech:

17. "It is an honour for me to join with you this evening. I am thankful to Magrudy's for arranging this event for the launch of my autobiography.

18. "I have often shopped at Magrudy's with my children. In those days I never dreamt that I would be visiting for the launch of the republished version of my memoirs. It is a special honour for me to be here this evening to meet with you.

19. "Last winter I had the opportunity to republish my book. I took that opportunity to share with a new generation my life as a Muslim woman in a largely Muslim country.

20. "The tragedies, the triumphs, the turbulence in Pakistani society mirror my life as a woman, a political activist and as a Muslim.

21. "As I say in my book, I did not choose this life. It chose me.

22. "It was never my goal to be a political leader.

23. "Some say it was my destiny, but if so, it was one I embraced due to circumstances beyond my control.

24. "My father Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was a reformer who dedicated himself to the freedom and social emancipation of the people of Pakistan.

25. "He taught me to be proud of my religion Islam, a religion that proclaimed the equality of men and women.

26. "My father was determined that I would have the same rights as my brothers. At the age of sixteen I left for Harvard University on the east coast of America.

27. "The burgeoning movement for women's rights empowered and emboldened me. I had always been inspired by the example of Bibi Khadija, the wife of the Holy Prophet of Islam, who was a working woman and the first to give witness to the revelation of the Holy Quran.

28. "But above all, in England and America I saw the awesome power of the people changing policies and changing history.

29. "When I returned to Pakistan after completing my studies, an army coup took place. We did not know during that long dark night of the coup whether we would live or die.

30. "My Father was arrested, released, rearrested and finally hanged.

31. "When I took my leave of him from the dark death cell in which the tyrants had imprisoned him, I promised to keep alive his dream of a democratic Pakistan.

32. "Since then I have never wavered in my commitment to democracy.

33. "The battle for democracy has not been an easy one. I lost my two brothers who were both victims of political assassination. My husband spent eleven and a half years of our married life behind prison walls.

34. "I was imprisoned for almost six years as was my Mother. We were hunted, hounded and exposed to psychological warfare to break our spirit. Our faith in God, the people of our country and the righteousness of our cause sustained us through the bitter days and nights.

35. "I raised my children as a single parent coping with the demands of a family, a political career and litigation. As a Mother, I suffered the most when I had to leave my children when they were small. I had shifted them to London and then Dubai while I continued to live in Pakistan for a while.

36. "I had been told that I could never be elected Prime Minister of Pakistan because I am a woman.

37. "The religious parties opposed a woman leading a Muslim country. However some religious scholars supported me.

38. "My political struggle became a treatise of Islam and the rights of women.

39 "As a woman, I feel a special responsibility towards women everywhere. As Prime Minister I opened up job and credit opportunities for women in the country. I opened up opportunities for young people by investing in education and health.

40. "Long before terrorism or religious extremism became part of the international discourse, I confronted those forces in my country.

41. "Since the undemocratic overthrow of my government in 1996, Pakistan has witnessed many critical moments.

42. "Three years after my removal from office, a military coup took place in 1999.

43. "I believe the restoration of democracy is critical to the future direction of Pakistan and to the South Asian Region.

44. Thank You"

Former Prime Minister Benazir addressing on the issues of Democracy and freedom.

I hope she does not get elected again...it will be her third time......and maybe this time she will be more successful in destroying the country. Twice her government had ruled ...twice she 'screwed' things up. she is corrupt along with her husband...she has numerous properties abroad...such as the UK (she lives in a posh area...one even Tony Blair could not afford....where did they get all that weaLTH....if they can make themselves rich...why not the county?...or is it that they have looted the wealth from the poor majority?)

It saddens me that 'people' are still contemplating benazir or even Nawaz to run the country...this is why education should be a priority...SO THAT PEOPLE CAN THINK for THEMSELVES - and use right judgement (I mean if a snake bites you once - you were unlucky, to bite you twice you are a fool and to be bitten thrice.....then its utter STUPIDITY). The PPL should KICK her out, Nawaz's party should KICK him and his cronies out.

Banazir is a self hungry 'witch'....no more than that.....she has given Pakistan's secret's to the western world (i think that would be TREASON ?) she only care's about herself....they live lavishly in foreign counties and soon as the 'tough gets going' they leg it out.

What Pakistan needs is the silent (humble, truthful and educated people to come forward) and humble leadership to come forward. The one that SERVES ITS PEOPLE and not have it's people serve it's interests. Only then will you see rapid standards of living, justice and equality.

It baffles me why in country of 150 million+ they cannot find a better sincere leader!!!!

^^

Your speculation on what u hear is called Propoganda, but Musharraf the Dictator has not brought any future for Pakistan he is traitor himself. However, you haven't put any light on that. The people need freedom and they need elected government who ever they chose is the Leader and that is it power to the People. Recent events show this Propoganda Musharraf could not do any thing when people went on the streets to protest on the against him.

I rather vote for a democrate than live on my knees infront of a Dictator.

"(I mean if a snake bites you once - you were unlucky, to bite you twice you are a fool and to be bitten thrice.....then its utter STUPIDITY)."

Yeah well this is the third Military government and probably the third time Pakistan will be in shambles again.

.
i really am praying that benazir and nawaz dont get ellected. If this happens this will really spell trouble for pakistan.

.
^^
That is something postive said by you, a elected government rather than a Dictatorship who ever the People elect as there repersentatives should be upon them all power to the people.

Mere election cannot be described as democracy.
Democracy is a name of system, which should benfit the common people most.
What do you call a 'civil martial law administrater'. A person came to power by elections and than turned dictator.
Most recent example was N.Sharif elected turned tyrant, he had his private jails and security force (similar to what Z.Bhutto had). Only missing thing was the title of King.

A great saying by Karl Marx,

“Go on, get out. Last words are for fools who haven't said enough.”

Stop back stabbing those who are dead, why do u argue about something you have little or no knowlege of?

.
^^'Not ignorance, its the ignorance of ignorance, which is death of the knowledge'
Those who live in fool's paradise, actually thinks that the world is full of fools.

A glimpse of ''battle for democracy'';
In the regime of Benazir her brother accused her of corruption and subsequently he was brutly assasinated and not a single person has been accused ever since.
Though it is widely known that Benazir orchestered his extrimination.

Not one, rather on various accounts, she has been convicted by Pakistani and (reputable) International courts.
She is wanted by Pakistani law enforcing agencies, again on various criminal accounts and a simple letter from govt. of Pakistan can put her on the wanted list of Interpol.
She is a runaway, untill recently she rediscovered her affections for Pakistan.

Some time back she made a schrewd plan and fabricated a political alliance cum pact with (brainless) N.Sharif to unite there forces to oust the reformist govt. of P.Musharraf and chalked up a plan to creat civil un-rest. They extended their alliance to (taliban type)hardliners and started an un-ending course of (un-neccessary) violent protests, with ever changing grounds some times they accused the govt. as puppet of America and some times 180-deg. opposite. How ever all this act resulted in a state of kiosk.

All this time Benazir kept lying and cheatng her alliance partners and established back channel communications with the govt. in leu of political co-operation.

With ousting of CJ (on curruption charges) she found vital opportunity to duck the government towards her bid (a political black mail).
She took all the required initiatives, appointed her former minister as a lawyer of the convicted CJ, this put her in ful charge of situation and she started shaping the proceedings carefuly to her advantage and wasted no time to re-opened the negotiation round with the government.
Her demands are open mystery to all Pakistan.

No wonder, she holds no respect among her political asscoiates, party workers and common Pakistani.
Sorry, but she don't care about Pakistan or Pakistanis, this is her best bet not only to right off her criminal record but to get in to power through back door and than declare same regime a democracy.

She is a dictator who is shouting democracy and doing 'Tasbeeh' of rule.
I see her rule as a classic monarchy, her father was Prime minister and next in line are her siblings.

Giving her any support is same as closing eyes.

Lets hope Pakistan never got to see her version of sham democracy, ever again.

Web description of her brother's murder from her infamous rule:
In 1995 he formed a group that split from the ruling Pakistan People's Party and accused his sister of corruption. However shortly before his death there were signs of reunification and many meetings in the Prime Minister's house, where the siblings began to reconcile, realizing people had been feeding them false information in order to cause friction.

On the night of Thursday 19 September 1996, Murtaza was shot dead along with six other party activists in a police encounter near his residence. Several weeks later, on November 5, the PPP government was again dismissed, taking advantage of the distraught Bhutto. Asif Zardari, Benazir's husband, was charged with the murder and the case is still pending.

Batman....well what can I say.....I agree with you on this....I think people should realise that if you have been given two opportunities to run the country and screw it up badly.....then no more. I say lock the 'bums' in jail and try them all for treason!!!

I think Interceptor needs to broaden up...he seem's to be too passionate in the belief of these corrupt individuals. History gives the facts/the evidence of these culprits.....all state they were nothing more than SELF-HUNGRY POWER SEEKERS. All these do is get elected and then start undermining one another until the country is on the verge of destruction.

Furthermore, I do not agree with any form of military dictatorship, as this is bad for the country. however out of two evils.....I think the military is a lesser evil. at least they keep the country more stable...just look at the current military's record...alot better economic situation of the country, especially in these hard times.

Furthermore, I believe if you look at history as a proof. Then it has been the implementation of true ISLAM (The religion of PEACE) that has made the muslims great in almost everything.

Islam made the the Muslims.....please note the difference...it was not the muslims who made it great but the other way round....Islam made the muslims.

Pakistan and the Muslim world need to go back to the beautiful teachings of the truthful and final religion on this planet...Islam.

Muslims are suffereing because they are not following Islam. Numerous corrupt and evil so called scholars have made this religion seem harsh and backward. The prophet (PBUH) was the most tolerent person, yet not many people follow him...including the 'crazy' people around the world who are causing mayhem by using the cloak of this peaceful religion.

Muslims should follow the true Islam. They need to do Jihad on one's ego (such as cravings for power and badness)....on corruption...Jihad on poverty.....education.....the rights and protection of minorities and other religions as given during the Prophets (PBUH) time.... etc.

Islam is sufficient for the success of this country. We do not need the likes of Karl Marx (Atheist/Communist), Capitalism, so-called western democracy or any other ism. Islam had catered for the development of all. The true implementation of Islam will be a rise up for the muslims but also a great period for the world. Peace and tranquility if the true Islam is ever to be implemented.

Foxhound, really loved your post and points towards self-introspection, The problem with Muslims(not Islam, as you say) is the way they treat other religions. Islam is not the only religion in the world, there are more than 1.5 billion Christians, 1 billion muslims, close to 1 billion Hindu's, and lot of other religions, No religion or its people is going to be subservient to others. They will never stand as the second fiddle.

I agree with you, military rule is like a slot machine, chances of jackpot are very slim.
Dictatorship in any form is not good, even when it comes through the process of elections.
Once you see that your ruler is a better person do not attempt to change, dosn't matter which channel it came from.
I even recomend to hire a qualified manager on a big salary for the job.

Islam is sufficient for the success of this country. We do not need the likes of Karl Marx (Atheist/Communist), Capitalism, so-called western democracy or any other ism.
We have many islamic countries where rulers are King but every one is wealthy and happy. People go there to live from un-islamic countries.
Becasue mismanagment produce more disaster than corruption it self.
