Bangladesh's exports hit all-time high of over 52 bln USD in FY 2021-22

Bro, Bangla is a massive handicap.

You learn by reading and listening.

What journals, books and online lessons are in Bangla?

It’s a massive handicap even for first generation Bengali immigrants in the west.

Thankfully, British Bangladeshi kids are now on par with middle class whites. But if their parents spoke English - they would be even higher.

You cannot compare east Asia with Bangladesh.

East Asia (China, Japan and Korea) was already industrialised whereas Bangladesh only started in the 1980s.

And Bengal suffered two famines under British rule and was systematically deindustrialised.

We cannot progress without speaking the Queen’s English.

Bangls is no handicap and English is not a necessity for development. East Asian countries developed without being good in English. We fail to realize our lack of planning to advance the country in scientific, technological and industrial fields have led to the slow development of the country and then propose English as a remedy to fix it. It is better to know at least but certainly not a pre-requisite. Our subcontinental people are still mental slaves of the British.

Bangladesh could become a middle income country just with the export of garment products. People are underestimating the value of the textile industry.

This.

We definitely need to diversify but the textile sector hasn't even reached it's full potential yet. The textile alone can bring upto 100-150B.

We Bengalis seem to be good in textile somehow. Historically it was the Muslin Bengal was known for and made a fortune by exporting it, in 21st century textile seems to be the goose laying golden eggs. We have to diversify but any industry we diversify to must be in addition to textile, that is we should not leave our dominance in textile just because we managed to diversify.

Germany, France, Spain and Italy. Neither speaks English and dub all english speaking cinema.

Just cannot see English being ever supplanted.

The internet is in English.

Key journals and research is in English.

Critical mass of literature is and continue to be in English.

English speaking world is just too big and diverse.

China is a controlled society - hence will never open up - required for cultural and linguistic influence.

China will be rapidly ageing by 2030. And will fade like Japan.
If you type baidu in your internet browser and type some Chinese words in the search bar, you will see how much stuff is over there. Chinese side of the virtual world is just as massive as other part of the world combined. It is not accessible to many people not because physical access but language barrier.

If you are interested in technology, culture or future thinking, it will open a new world for you. I am certain that English speaking content will continue to dominate and popular in the world but you double your knowledge by entering the Chinese world. So why not?

I totally agree that English is not a necessity for development and certainly not for studying science and technology underpin it.

Sometimes I feel excellent English language skill of Southern Asian people does not serve their national interest as people found it easy to fit into and develop a good career in English speaking nations rather than developing their homeland. Although this is not the only reason why there is a loss of talent people to developed, English speaking nations, it makes people forget where their root is and are more likely to subscribe to the value and custom from British.

This is an interesting take on it. Never thought about it.

Garments is our new “golden fibre”.

Even Muslin.

We have always done great work with fabrics.

It will rapidly lift us into middle income.

And provide the foundation for upper income.

But we need to build those English Medium schools in every district in the next five years.

It’s our destiny to rule everything east of Delhi, again.

We did it before and we will again!

This is why Sanghis are so scared!

@Protest_again I don't know what to say at this point.

for 160-170 milion country not that good

Only 51 years of independence so far and it started with just 0.36bn the year after independence in 1972- yearly average growth rate of 10%

Just wait another 15-20 more and see the likely volume then.

And so?

An extra 14 years makes a big difference when you are growing your exports by 10% on average every year.

60 x 1.1^14 = 230 billion US dollars.

BD is just warming up as this decade garments will explode as China starts losing all it's competitiveness in the industry. The chances are exports will grow even faster than the historical average of 10%.

The IT,pharma and electronics are primed for take off. Electronics has been growing many 100s of per cent a year over last 2 years and will probably carry on this trend for many years to come before it slows down.

Here is an interesting fact - Mughal Bengal used to produce 50% of the wealth of the whole of Mughal India 300 years ago and it was centred on Dhaka, which is the capital of BD.

BD is just slowly regaining it's normal historical place lost to British colonisation. Nothing special with BD being the fastest growing large developing economy in the world.

No as most of Singapore exports are re-exports via foreign multinationals.

You know as it’s trade volume is much larger than its economy.

BD exports are almost always domestic companies.

Of course it matters as tech and profits are not Singaporese.

BD on purpose limits FDI as it wants to build up its own companies.
