I was hoping atleast $3.2B, anyway BD is carefully observing Relations and Economy, very clever, won't be surprised a large orders post 2020 for Tri Arm with huge Funds in hands.

Only $2.12 billion defence budget for a nation of 150 million people? It sounds a bit risky.

To have a big defence budget you need a big economy in order to pay for it. We are first giving priority to growth, then we'll be able to afford a large defence budget. At the moment we just spend less the 1.3% of our GDP or $2bn on defence an still have an army of 300,000+.

Our GDP is only $180bn, an the per capita GDP is just around $1200 or so. We need to double our GDP (to closer to $300bn in the next decade, 2025), then we can think about spending 2% ($6bn) or more on defence like our neighbours.

BD is not a war monger. It spends only that much money which it thinks can cover its minimum defense necessity. BD economy is weak, its GDP is only $180b. When we build a $400 economy, even the the same outlay percentage of today will allot a big spending for the military.

By the way, our defense budget does not show the money our country spends on military hardware import from foreign country. Someone can calculate the total of these procurements and add to the expenses the GoB outwardly declares as its defense budget to know about the total defense budget.

He also should add the money the govt spends on its 80,000 strong BGB border troops which are not shown on the defense budget because BGB is under the Home Ministry, and not under the defense ministry.

It is about 3 billion dollars a year when you add in defence purchases. So true defence budget is around 2 per cent of GDP.
