Tens of thousands of Islamic activists hold prayers on streets of Bangladesh capital to call for new blasphemy laws | Mail Online

Tens of thousands of Islamic activists prayed on the streets of the Bangladeshi capital today during a rally calling for the introduction of blaspemy laws and the restoration of a caretaker government.
Members of the Islami Andolan Bangladesh are demanding the arrest of 'atheist bloggers who insulted Islam' and to pass laws punishing those who 'insulted Islam in the parliament'.
They have announced plans to 'lay siege' to the office of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 25 if their demands are not met.

They include the restoration of the phrase 'absolute trust and faith upon Almighty Allah' in basic principles of the constitution; passing laws to punish atheists; holding of national elections under an impartial government; ensuring good governance and justice, uprooting terrorism and corruption; and establishing Islamic rule for a prosperous and welfare state.
According to The Daily Star | Your Right To Know, the party's Amir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karimalso told the rally: 'The incumbent and previous governments have nurtured corruption, violence, nepotism and other different evil practices during last few decades.

'Islami Andolan Bangladesh should be voted to power to get rid of this situation.'
Meanwhile, clashes between police and supporters of the country's biggest Islamic party left five dead on Friday during protests linked to ongoing war crimes trials, police and media said.

Jamaat-e-Islami activists have been staging countrywide strikes and rallies for months to protest against the trials which have placed nearly their entire party leadership in the dock, in cases dating back to the 1971 independence war.
Friday's first incident occurred when lawmakers entered a village in northwestern Chapainawabganj district to arrest party activists accused of torching a power plant in such a protest last month.
About 6,000 villagers gathered to try and prevent the arrests, leading police to open fire.
'We at first used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the mob, but they attacked us with hand bombs, sticks and bricks, forcing us to open fire,' deputy district police chief Motiur Rahman told AFP.
'We have heard the news of three men killed, but we have not seen any dead bodies,' he said.

Local media reports quoted villagers saying three Jamaat supporters were killed, two on the spot and one on the way to hospital.
In a separate but similar wave of protests in northwestern Sirajganj district, two Jamaat supporters died after being hit with bullets, local police chief Shamsul Huq told AFP.
Police officers went to arrest an activist also accused of violence last month while protesting against the war crimes trial, but they too faced defiance from several thousand villagers.
With the latest deaths, 94 people have now been killed in clashes linked to the trials since the war crimes court handed down the first of its verdicts in January over atrocities during Bangladesh's independence struggle from Pakistan.
Two Jamaat leaders have already been convicted by the tribunal, which critics accuse of trumping up charges in a bid by the government to settle political scores, rather than deliver justice.
The government says the trials are needed to heal the wounds of the 1971 war in which it says three million people were killed and 200,000 women raped.
Independent estimates put the death toll between 300,000 and 500,000.

IAB to support Hefajat’s ‘Dhaka siege’

Islami Andolan Bangladesh on Friday said it would extend support to the ‘Dhaka siege’ programme called by Hefajat-e-Islam for
April 6, if the government did not arrest the ‘atheist’ bloggers of Shahbagh by April 5.

IAB amir Syed Rezaul Karim, better known as Pir Saheb of Charmonai, made the announcement at a ‘grand rally’ of the party at the
capital’s Motijheel Shapla roundabout on Friday.
The rally demanded formulation of an anti-blasphemy act to punish the ‘atheists’.
IAB organised the rally to push its five-point demand that included restoration of the phrase ‘absolute faith and trust in Almighty Allah’ in the constitution, holding of the next general election under a non-partisan government, an end to violence and terrorism and introduction of an ‘Islamic constitution’.
The IAB amir announced that they would besiege the Prime Minister’s Office on April 25 demanding enactment of a law for punishment of those who were maligning Islam as well as arrest of the ‘atheist’ bloggers.
They will submit a memorandum to the office of the United Nations in Dhaka on April 4 in demand of stopping the killing of Muslims in Myanmar and vowed to start a ‘long march’ towards Myanmar on May 8 in protest at the mass killings and burning of mosques, madrassahs and houses of Muslims in that country.
The IAB long marches will start from Dhaka to Kuakata on April 19, 20 and 21, from Dhaka to Tentulia on May 13, 14 and 15 and from Dhaka to Sylhet on June 2 and 3. They will hold a worker’s rally in Dhaka on May 1 to mobilise public support for its five-point demand.
The IAB amir said some people had been making ‘derogatory’ remarks on Islam and the Prophet (SM) as the government remained ‘silent’. The government has been behaving like ‘autocrats’ and pursuing a policy of ‘oppression’ on opposition parties in the name of democracy, he added.
He also criticised the opposition for boycotting parliament while enjoying all facilities and privileges of parliamentary democracy.
Other IAB leaders censured Jamaat-e-Islami for opposing the liberation war and defaming Islam. They said the doctrine of Jamaat founder Maulana Maududi did not represent true Islam.
IAB secretary general Maulana Yunus Ahmad said they would work with Jamaat-e-Islami, if it gave up its founder’s doctrine at an open press conference.

The rally was also addressed by IAB Dhaka city unit amir ATM Hemayet Uddin, presidium members Nurul Huda Fayezi and Fayzul Karim.
Several thousand followers of Charmonai Pir Saheb joined the rally.

Islami Andolan says Jamaat ‘defaming’ Islam

The Islami Andolan on Friday accused the Jamaat-e-Islami of ‘defaming Islam’ and said the outfit, which opposed Bangladesh’s independence, had an ‘impaired view’ of the religion.

Addressing a rally at the capital’s Motijheel Shapla Intersection, Secretary General of Islami Andolan Prof Maulana Yunus Ahmad said supporting the Jamaat was like ‘siding with the wrong’.

The rally was held to press for the party’s five-point charter of demands.

Speakers at the rally said the Jamaat-e-Islami was a big threat to the nation and its independence.

Maulana Yunus Ahmad said the party believed in ‘Moududi' theory. “This theory cannot even explain Islam properly. That’s why campaign of Islam based on this theory must be stopped.”

“Jamaat and Shibir are creating anarchy across the country, while the other parties are getting the blame. This is defamation of Islam. That’s why they must be resisted,” he said.

The rally kicked off at 2pm with Islami Andolan chief Syed Rezaul Karim alias Chormonai Pir presiding over the public meeting. Closure of roads because of the rally led to traffic snarls on the routes leading to Motijheel.

Motijheel Police Station OC Hayatuzzaman said the rally organisers had assured police that no untoward incidents would take place. “That’s why they were permitted to hold the rally.”

But the roads were closed considering security issues, he added.

Bdnews24.com?? seriously??

Bangladesh is such a polarized nation. there seem to be equal support for both the sides.

I also say that i dont support Jamat...... They have problems in their akidah, but they are far better than dalals at the moment. Dalals are security threat for bangladesh. both Jamat and Pakistan were neutralized in 1971 by Patriots.... But dalals and their mother country still have fangs.

Some tolerance will be respected many be you want to change from Bangladesh to Talibandesh! LOL!

Bangladesh is not Pakistan dude, our islamists are peaceful deobandis.... suicide attack?? what is that???

Not yet, but you might well be onto he path to Talibandesh. Hardly can call them peaceful if they are going around rioting and killing people. Suicide bombing will just logically become the next step for you guys, once killing/rioting becomes normal.

Arresting people for simply saying things? If you dont agree with what someone says regarding your religious beliefs, just agree to disagree. Going around killing/arresting people is not justified.

What could be more blasphemous to Islam than people who call themselves muslims and do not pay taxes, manipulate politics, destroy their country's properties on baseless rumors, hurt ordinary peoples' livelihoods and destabilize the country that gave them birth.

A similar approach should be applied to nationalists who claim to defend the country, but ruin it by disrupting its stability.

It does not mattet if your bangalis are not pakistanis, it just takes 10 minutes for taliban leader to turn any muslim into happy suicide bomber!
I Am not saying this, an anti taliban journalist in peshawar said this!

Agree to disagree?? if i write blogs about your mother and sister ( guess the content) , what would you do?? simply agree to disagree?? We, Islamists ( muslims) have no problem with atheist .. read the thread title again.....

I wouldnt go around killing you and neither would you be put in jail for writing blogs about whatever.

If someone says something, you can always counter him or her by logically responding. No need to resort to violence and killings, neither should arrests be made for simply saying something.

Anyways its your country and for you guys to choose which path you want to go down in...
