Bangladeshi shipbuilders to export 30 vessels to fetch $300m by 2012


A couple of leading shipbuilders of the country will deliver 30 small ocean-going ships to fetch $300 million from their clients mostly in Europe by the end of the next calendar year, shipbuilders said on Tuesday.

To meet the delivery deadline the shipyards are busy building the ocean going and ice-class vessels for their clients also in Africa and Asia.

The Western Marine Shipyard Limited (WMSL), one of the leading shipbuilder, will deliver 20 ocean-going ships worth $200 million to firms in the Holland, Denmark and Singapore. The deals also included two passengers vessels for Karachi Port Trust.

Two ships, each with 5,200 DWT (deadweight tonnage), a passenger ferry, two passengers floating vessel have already been delivered to Germany, Finland and Pakistan.

"We are building the rest seven and a couple of ships with a DWT between 4,100 and 4,800 are complete and will be floated soon," Shakawat Hossain, managing director of Western Marine Shipyard Ltd, told the FE.

WMSL, based in at Kolagaon in Chittagong, on the bank of the river Karnaphuli near the country's main port, some 300 km (188 miles) southeast of the capital Dhaka, is likely to complete its delivery by the end of the current year or early next year.

"The Ananda Shipyard and Slipways Limited (ASSL), the country's pioneer ship exporter, will deliver 10 other ships worth $110 million to European buyers, mainly in Germany and Denmark," said Eng. Saiful Islam, technical director of Ananda Shipyard said.

WMSL is currently negotiating with shipping companies in several European and Middle Eastern countries for building dozens of ships worth $400 million in the coming years.

Ananda Shipyard and Slipways Limited, located at Meghnaghat on the river Meghna, was a pioneer in the sector and has so far won deals to build 26 small ships worth $400 million. The orders came from Denmark, Mozambique and Germany.

Good news. This should carry on and the govt. should try to make this industry more lucrative locally.

that is impressive. Khulna shipyard is building 5 naval boats for our navy..... is it possible in near future to use this experience of ship building to produce Corvette or frigates with foreign armaments??

Yes very much possible...i think the navy should propose this idea and use the local expertise to build our own missile & torpedo boats, as they are smaller and are quite easy to design. 'Swarming tactic' is often very effective against bigger ships & threats and we might look into that.

After accumulating enough experience, only then can we set eyes into frigates and corvettes...but should not be impossible.

Shipbuilder hands over 4 ships to local, foreign buyers at Chittagong


CHITTAGONG, July 29: The country's leading shipbuilder today handed over four ships to its buyers from home and abroad through a formal delivery function at the Chittagong Port.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan attended the function as chief guest, while Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu MP attended it as special guest. Shipping Secretary Abdul Mannan Hawladar, the Dutch ambassador in Dhaka and Vice Chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau Jalal Ahmed were present on the occasion.

Western Marine Shipyard handed over two vessels to the German buyer Grona Shipping as part of delivery of 12 Ice Class vessels. Each vessel for the German company was built at a cost of Tk 1000 million. The EMSTIDE and EMSWAVE are the fifth and sixth vessels delivered while another two vessels will be handed over to the foreign company by next December.

Managing Director of Grona Shipping Ebbe Prins received the vessels from the MD of Western Marine, Engineer Shakhawat Hossain.

Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Abdul Mannan Hawladar received the pilot-cum-service vessel PV Rakkhi while Chairman of BIWTC (Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority) Golam Mostafa Kamal received the Ro-Ro ferry Bir Sreshtha Ruhul Amin from the Western Marine Shipyard authorities.
