Bangladesh upset over Teen Bigha ‘snub’

Kolkata Absence of leading Central, state ministers, including Mamata, puts off Dhaka
The absence of leading union ministers and West Bengal government representatives, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to Teen Bigha Corridor in Cooch Behar district on Wednesday seems to have put off Dhaka.
An upset Bangladesh now appears to be skeptical about the Indian government's intention to implement the recently signed agreement on the 24-hour transit facility at the corridor and the exchange of enclaves.
A minister in the Bangladesh government told The Indian Express over the phone, "We had high expectation from this meeting. Initially, we were told that the Union Home Minister will be present
at Teen Bigha and a meeting will be held between our Prime Minister and him. However, his trip to Teen Bigha was cancelled."
"Moreover, neither the Chief Minister of West Bengal nor any of the state ministers were present to welcome our Prime Minister.
We expected the presence of state representatives there. But not even an MLA of West Bengal attended the meeting. We will discuss this issue with the Indian government," the minister said.
A source in Bangladeshi government said the scheduled meeting between Hasina and the Union Home Minister "was an important one". "We were told that the Home Minister's visit was cancelled as there was an urgency on his part. But we expected that another minister will be sent with whom our prime minister would hold the meeting. But the meeting was cancelled. It has not been taken well here," the source said.
Meanwhile, residents of Bangladeshi enclaves in India will go on a hunger strike from October 27 demanding immediate implementation of the agreement on the exchange of enclaves signed between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sheikh Hasina.
Diptiman Sengupta, secretary of the Indo-Bangladesh Enclave Exchange Coordination Committee said, "We cannot have patience now as we are maintaining peace here for more than five decades. From October 27, we will start a hunger strike unto death in our enclaves. We feel that if people do not die here due to the indifference of the government, our cries will not reach the ears of political functionaries."
Sengupta warned that if necessary, they will give shelter to insurgent groups and take their support to spearhead a greater movement. "Since there is no movement of police in our areas, the insurgents can easily be given shelter. We visit the district administration every alternative day and we are told that they are ready with all related documents but are yet to receive any communication from the Centre. We do not have any trust in the government," he said.
