Bangladesh teachers arrested over ‘blasphemous’ drama

DHAKA: Police in Bangladesh said on Saturday they had arrested two school teachers on suspicion of staging a drama containing blasphemous remarks about the Prophet Mohammed.

The school’s Muslim headmaster and a female Hindu teacher were detained on Friday as thousands protested the play following weekly prayers at Kaliganj, 250 kilometres southwest of the capital Dhaka, police chief Farid Uddin said.

“The drama contained blasphemous remarks about the Prophet, which angered Muslim villagers,” the local police official told AFP.

He said the teachers had been accused of “hurting religious sentiment” for helping organise the drama at their school.

At least 3,000 demonstrators barricaded a key road and held noisy protests in front of the school and in other towns in the district on Friday.

Violence also erupted on Saturday as up to 7,000 Muslims shouted slogans and set ablaze the house of the drama’s director, who has fled the remote area, another senior police official Zaiadul Haq told AFP.

“The situation is still volatile,” he said.

Some 90 per cent of Bangladesh’s 150 million people are Muslim and Islam is country’s state religion.

The country’s secular government has dealt harshly with any event or publications seen as potentially upsetting religious feelings out of concern they could trigger protests by ultra-conservative Islamist outfits.

Last week, a Bangladesh court ordered authorities to shut down five Facebook pages and a website for displaying allegedly blasphemous content.

yes they have been arrested, and the courts will look into the matter, if found guilty they will face the law of the land, if found innocent they will be free regardless of what the lynch mob wants.

These Awami-leagers and specially some Hindus are on a high since BAL came to power. Another hindu teacher in a dhanmondi school
even said that the authorities can't to anything and he would keep on insulting islam. Don't know what happened to the case after that but these awamileagers should realize that this is not India and if they have a problem with ISLAM, they should leave BD for
India, after all that's where there soul resides.

Since Hindu minded munafiq Al came to power in 2008, some Hindu and Islamic named Awami Hindus gone out of control. They are in illusion that Bangladesh has already become Hindu state where they can say what ever feel like to humiliate our prophet and Islam with out facing consequences. It has come to news that in some instances female students are barred from entering school (some schools in Dacca) because they wear Niqab and long dress, and male studetnts were barred becasue they grow beard and wear kurta payjama. All these un democratic anti-Islamic practices are going on due to Al Hindu secular nature but Muslim are waiting.

These Hindu fundamentalists and Islamic named Awami Hindus will face serious consequences with the change of government. I am waiting to see these bigots face the music in about 2 years Insh'Allah.

What a load of propaganda!....punjabi and kurta I understand, but niqab is bollocks, if a woman in Bangladesh decides to wear burkha or niqab i believe no one would say a word to her about it, if anything they get more respect. Even during BAL government they wouldn't dare do such a thing. Stop using propaganda.

We have the same problem here in Pakistan where, never mind the validity of the Blasphemy Law, a grave miscarriage of justice often occurs with many innocent Muslims and Non-Muslims alike are put behind bars for a Blasphemy they did not commit. If, our respective, Govt's want to keep this law, they should at least legislate that in case of a Blasphemy case the burden of proof will be, in both letter and practice of the Law, on the prosecution to prove without reasonable doubt that the Blasphemy did occur and in case they can't they'd be themselves prosecuted.

I heard from few teachers that they have problems in enforcing dress code in Schools and dont have any guideline in dealing with Burqa and Niqab. The school authorities should have alternate dresses for who wishing to use Burqa or Tupi matching with the color of the school dress.

U can put the teachers into jail if they are guilty, but talking against the 10% population of BD is like literally threatening them and showing some of BD members hate against hinduism !!
