Three mobile phone operators have launched high-speed services

Bangladesh has entered an era of digital connectivity as three mobile phone operators rolled out the 4G mobile phone services in the country on Monday evening.

They launched the 4G services in Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna and Sylhet cities soon after getting the licences from Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

BTRC Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood officially handed over the licences to the chief executive officers of four mobile phone operators – Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink and Teletalk — at a function organised by the BTRC and Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) at Dhaka Club.

The operators also received the tech neutrality and radio communication apparatus licences at the function.

A message from ICT Adviser to the Prime Minister Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy was read out by BTRC Director General (Spectrum) Brig Gen Nasim Parvez.

The mobile phone companies will launch the high-speed internet services in other major cities and towns gradually.

Terming the launching of the 4G services a milestone for the country, Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar said the government’s services will now reach people’s doorsteps through mobile phones more easily.

Urging the mobile phone operators to improve their services so that people can be benefited with the 4G services, he directed the BTRC to look into whether charging Tk110 for the 4G SIM replacement is logical.

The BTRC chairman described the launching of 4G services a groundbreaking step, saying the internet speed will get a big boost.

Earlier on February 13, BTRC held the 4G spectrum auction for allocating new frequencies to mobile operators. The government earned Tk5,268.51 crore in revenue.

Banglalink took 10.6 MHz spectrum from different two bands – 2100 and 1800, with a price of Tk2,558 crore while Grameenphone took 5MHz from 1800 band with a price of Tk1,284 crore.

Robi did not buy any spectrum as it and Airtel have merged into one operator while Teletalk has already enough spectrum to launch the 4G services.

The government also earned another Tk850.4 crore as tech neutrality fees from three operators: GP, Banglalink and Robi, and VAT of total Tk5,289.08 crore.

Teletalk, Citycell, Banglalink, Grameenphone and Robi participated in the auction. Citycell was not allowed as it had lost the operator licence.

4G in Bangladesh in 2018? isn't it a bit too late? We got it back in 2014. I thought you guys already had a 4G network

. . .
We can only congratulate a country moving forward, whatever the time it takes.

Congratulations to Bangladesh. And long live to the 4G. :enjoy:

Test done at home and is still good, despite living quite far from any antenna. :victory:

How much are 4G sim plans going to cost there ?

The main reason was frequency distribution and interfearance/overlapping of frequency with different types of service provider for example pstn/cdma/gsm etc. That caused delay to implement 3G and subsequently 4G. If I am not mistaken India had same issue while implementing 3G.

Current frequency distribution of Bangladesh for 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz cellular network

Pakistan has very few operator so frequency distribution is not that of a big issue. I assume Pakistan did not have cdma or pstn operators while implementing 3G

Bangladesh entered 3g era before pakistan. Im ok with 3g speed, dont feel the need of 4g in mobile platform. Bulk data cost is the issue in these 3g/4g. Using broadband and kicking, high speed and unlimited use, I think one of the lowest in the region.

3g "era" started back in 2008 in Pak through non mobile operators like WorldCall and PTCL Evo.Mobile Based was introduced 2014.

In 2020 if everything goes as planned. :agree: There should be full scale tests in several cities between 2018 and 2020. In 2020,the operators will begin the 5G deployment.

Given you have a compatible phone,you could reach 15 GB/s in download ! :o:

I dont know what are those. Anyway I like the data plan of Pakistan's mobile based platforms. BD wireless service providers should have followed same long time ago. BD's fiber optic broadband service is really good I can say. Outside Dhaka people may not have same opinion. And you can boast all you want about 3g/4g service in Pakistan. End of the day Pakistan service providers dont connect remote places like they do in BD. I can go to vacation anywhere in BD and still connect to internet. In Pakistan go to to Balochistan desert and sit mum there. In fact outside indus river region 3g/4g connection is really poor, it makes all difference to vast people.
