if you are talking about general everyday conversation(not urdu poetry).. most north Indians can understand urdu and pakistanis can understand hindi.Mate Hindustani is not a recognised language in either India or Pakistan. Your argument does not stand. Both Indian and Pakistani gov along with the rest of the world consider them separate languages for 'all intents and purposes'
Here if I have to talk to a pakistani (say a random person asking direction or me ordering food in pakistani takeaway) it might start with English but many times we (one of us) switch to hindi/urdu.
I have even used hindi to talk to some afgans(If I realize they are uncomfortable with English) and I think they understand more than 70-80 percent of what I am saying.
