Bangladesh resumes defence budget declines

by Jon Grevatt & Andrew MacDonald Jun 13, 2022, 11:20 AM

Bangladesh has announced a 2022–23 defence budget of BDT400 billion (USD4.2 billion), an increase of 7.7% over the revised expenditure BDT371.2 billion in 2021–22.

Bangladesh's 2022–23 defence budget is a nominal increase but a real-term decrease once inflation is accounted for. Modest growth in the expenditure is forecast by Janes during the next few years. (Janes Defence Budgets)
Bangladesh has announced a 2022–23 defence budget of BDT400 billion (USD4.2 billion), an increase of 7.7% over the revised expenditure BDT371.2 billion in 2021–22. The new allocation represents about 6% of total government expenditure in the year, although its growth is offset by rising inflation in the South Asian country.

Documents issued by the Ministry of Finance on 9 June show that the defence budget allocates BDT361.5 billion to Ministry of Defence (MoD) operating expenses, which is thought to include military salaries and costs for maintenance and operations. This is an approximate 8% increase over the revised allocation last year.

The new defence budget also includes BDT18.8 billion for development expenses including military procurement, an increase of 6%. The total allocation also includes BDT19 billion for MoD “other services”, and BDT450 million for the Bangladesh Armed Forces Division, which oversees policies and force deployment.

The Bangladesh Army has been allocated about 43% of the total 2022–23 defence expenditure, with the navy and air force receiving about 18% and 14%, respectively.

Bangladesh's military modernisation programme – called Forces Goal 2030, which was initiated in 2009 – has stalled in recent years owing to funding constraints compounded by the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Procurement activity has accordingly been modest in recent years but has featured an undisclosed number of Tiger T-300 multiple rocket launchers (MRLs) from Turkish company Roketsan and AeroVironment RQ-20B Puma and RQ-12B Wasp unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) from the United States.

I think "Forces Goal 2030" is now officially dead.

"Forces Goal 2035" anyone?

This has all the forshadowing of Russia trying to take over Ukraine - ie when Bangladesh is soo weak - it cannot resist "akhand bharat" in a future conflict with India etc.

Chance of India attacking BD is next to zero over the next 20-25 years. There is nothing for India to gain and a lot to lose.

BD is just doing this as a temporary measure due to severe effects of Covid-19 and Ukraine war.

Anyway the budget is just staying relatively flat and only decreasing very slightly in real terms. Probably in 1-2 years it will start rising in line with GDP growth + inflation.

“Bangladesh resumes defence budget declines”

Is that headline even cab driver English!!!!??

Anyway, your biggest national security issue is your economy!!

You better take care of that first!!

With extreme floods, covid and Europeans on the verge of another world war - it would be utterly stupid to fund the military complex.

Hasina brings the insight of a mother - feeding the family when a man would buy cigarettes!!

BD is so lucky to have her as PM.

No testosterone. Just motherly grind.

This has all the forshadowing of Russia trying to take over Ukraine - ie when Bangladesh is soo weak - it cannot resist "akhand bharat" in a future conflict with India etc.

Weak is when you have to beg the IMF to defer your debt repayments.

Or when your elected PM is ousted by America.

The only people who have wet dreams about “Akand Bharat shit” are cow piss drinkers and pindy Pakistanis.

Bangladeshis are not that insecure!

Why do you think forces goal 2030 is already dead? Why retreating? Is it because the Taka value has gone down to 110 Taka to 1 dollar? It will further go down to 120 which I predicted a few months ago.

Now, all your development propaganda has gone down the drain. So, I repeat, build industries first. How about military equipment industries? BD domestic enemies such as you love to import even the nuts and bolts, though!!

Now, I will see how many billions of dollars worth of railway locomotives and coaches do you guys import from now. Enemies like you should understand that all must be built in the country, instead. BD has 170 million people.

Your BAL party did nothing but import every tiny thing. Now, the dollar costs 110 Taka. Why? It is because thieves like you are buying dollars left and right with the money you stole and sending them outside the country. Money laundering at its peak.

But, why buying dollars? It is because the election is nearing and stupids like you will lose.

We will hang Hasina for staging the Pilkhana carnage.

Unsurprisingly, you jumped to conclusion without reading the article. The budget has increased nominally but reduced in REAL terms.
It is the same with Pakistan.

Akhand Bharat? My balls!! Better you check on the prospect of Akhand Bengal comprising BD, West Bengal, Tripura and the huge part of western Assam.
