Bangladesh’s military wants to broaden the scope of its relations with its counterpart in Myanmar and is exploring deeper cooperation in areas such as Burmese-language skills, joint exercises and intelligence sharing.

“We have good relations with Myanmar and I will be visiting as part of efforts to deepen those ties. The main objective of the visit is to strengthen mutual cooperation between the two armies, possibly including training exchanges,” Bangladesh army chief General Aziz Ahmed told reporters in Dhaka on Monday.

Bangladesh Defense Ministry officials told The Irrawaddy they have finalized the seven-member delegation that General Aziz will lead on a weeklong visit to the neighboring country from Dec. 8.

One top-ranking Bangladeshi official said the delegation will be looking to reach agreements on joint exercises and training with the Myanmar military, as well as staff-to-staff meetings, information sharing and Burmese-language training.

The official said, “We enjoy our relations, but unfortunately Myanmar stopped sending their officials to our NDC [the National Defense College in Dhaka] in 2016. So, we want to deepen our relations through mutual cooperation”.

General Aziz said, “Our aim is to bring both armies closer and to create scope so that we can discuss various issues of mutual benefit.”

He said he recently visited China and explained to the Chinese military leadership to what extent the Rohingya crisis could pose a regional threat “from the security point of view”.

He added that Bangladesh was now working to build fences around the sprawling Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.

Asked how the army would avoid criticism over the fencing, which is opposed by UN agencies, the army chief replied that the government had given the refugees shelter.

“Now, it is our responsibility to ensure their safety and security and that of the locals. We will discharge our duties.”

Gen. Aziz tried to improve bilateral relations following a series of border clashes in 2014 during his tenure as director-general of the Border Guard Bangladesh force. He visited Naypyitaw in June of that year to meet officials from the Myanmar Border Guard Police.

More than 730,000 Rohingya have entered Bangladesh since the Myanmar military launched security operations against the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army on Aug. 25, 2017.

Yeah, very excellent move!

A million Rohingyas shafted into ShonarDesh whilst focussing exclusively on India, makes one wonder what kinds of jobless jacks are running the country.

Anywho, who are we to counsel a country hell bent on self destruction. We will only play our part by sending a few millions of the illegal Bongal miyas infestating our lands as those fixated on India keeps up with it.

:cheesy::rofl: I support this line of thinking, will set a future precedence as far as dealing with BD is concerned..

As NRC is done now think of living under Bengali and Muslim dominance or you have three option, moving to mainland India, going back to China from where you cave mans primitive creatures have come from or going to monkey land Myanmar. Choice is yours.

Already out of 11.9 million Muslim in Assam 11.2 million already legalized. Most of the excluded will be legalized after court hearing. So keep on having wet dream of sending Bengali Muslim back.

I think BD give up on Rohingya issue. End of the day, it's Myanmar internal issue. BD has a fantastic economy growth ahead. Hing on this will destroy decades of effort by BD.

Case against Myanmar just about to start ICJ. Don’t thinks it’s a coincidence a country like Gambia filed the case out of no where. Bangladesh has openly called for sanction against Myanmar. As your communist lord playing nice game with saying they are helping Bangladesh to send back Rohingyas while helping bamar genocidal regime. Similarly it doesn’t hurt Bangladesh to visit Myanmar by showing it wants better relation while pursuing sanction behind the scene. It’s just called diplomacy.

Bangladesh either want return of Rohingya to Arakan or Arakan be incorporated with Bangladesh and all its inhabitant’s responsibility will be taken by Bangladesh.

How is that diplomacy when the visit has contradicitive effect? The BD military wants Rohingya issue to end quickly while it's the civilian and public that wants this genocide issue. I will say economic and military of BD will eventually swing to their favour and end Rohingya issue quickly.

Bangladesh Army Chief’s visit to Myanmar will play a positive role in resolving Rohingya crisis, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said on Wednesday.

“This will open a new channel of negotiation. I appreciate the move,” the minister told a press briefing.

The minister was responding to a question whether this visit would benefit Myanmar army, which is under pressure from the international community for its alleged crime against humanity.

Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed is scheduled to visit Myanmar in the first half of December on the invitation of the Myanmar army.

Myanmar Army plays a crucial role in policy making, so this visit would help us in resolving the problem, the minister noted.

Dr Momen termed Myanmar a friendly neighbouring country and said they expect solution to Rohingya crisis through negotiations.

However the minister admitted that Myanmar has been engaged in carrying out false propaganda against Bangladesh over the Rohingya repatriation issue.

When asked, whether such a country which is constantly lying against Bangladesh, should be treated as a friend, the minister skipped it.

About the relocation of Rohingyas to Bhasanchar, the minister said the government is ready for that.

“Whenever they will be ready, we will shift them. It will help removing congestion in the Cox’s Bazar camps. But we do not send any Rohingya to Bhasanchar against his or her will, “the minister said.

The minister said he is hopeful of resolving the crisis.

On the time frame he said, Thailand needed about 30 years to resolve refugee issue with Myanmar.

Dhaka and Naypyitaw have been fighting about repatriating more than one million refugees who fled a military crackdown in the northern Rakhine State of Myanmar and took shelter in southern Bangladeshi district of Cox's Bazar.

In reply to a query by local media, General Aziz on Sunday said, "the main objective of the visit would be to strengthen mutual cooperation between the armies of Bangladesh and Myanmar, including exchange of training,"

"We have good relations with Myanmar and I will be visiting the country as part of the process to further strengthen the relations, including exchange of training," he added.

Army and Government both wants to end this Rohingya issue with the safe return of the Rohingya not abandoning the issue of that is what you are claiming. Bangladesh army chief is traveling to Myanmar due to invitation by Myanmar army as a diplomatic gesture.

BD military has no opinion over the civilian government of Bangladesh. He will be fired the next day without any possibility of pension.
The reason our army is going there probably because, none of our civilian leader will meet army in Nay Pa Daw as they dont recognize precedence of army over civilian government of Myanmar.

Its probably a new thing for you as Indian, Chinese even American civilian leaders makes courtesy call with military in MM.

I think BD give up on Rohingya issue.
Nope. We will not take any decisions on Rohingya issue alone...
End of the day, it's Myanmar internal issue.
Welcome to age of "Globalisation". Where only individual privacy is respected...
BD has a fantastic economy growth ahead. Hing on this will destroy decades of effort by BD.
Well, our economic prosperity is tied with the west. As long as we are in their good list our economy will prosper. Thank you...

The rohingyas are staying in Bangladesh for the next 50 to 100 years.

Myanmar did not throw them out simply to take them back.

Also it won't be so easy resettling the rohingyas.

What makes you think that?

BD has an economy FIVE times that of Myanmar and it is militarising fast.
Hint - military will be used against Myanmar before India.
