A Bangladesh court Monday sentenced 657 border guards to up to seven years in jail for 2009 mutiny.
74 people, mostly commanding officers, were killed in the mutiny blamed on more than 2,000 guards. 108 guards were jailed for the maximum seven years as they were found guilty of taking part in the mutiny in the force s headquarters in the capital, Dhaka. The sentences for others range from four months to six years.
The special court is handling mutiny cases, while civilian courts are trying other crimes such as murder and arson committed in the rebellion. The mutiny started in Dhaka during an annual soldiers gathering in late February 2009, and spread around the country when the mutineers opened fire, blocked roads and drove commanding officers from offices and homes.
