The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) is a multi-national forum for enhancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia.

Currently 24 countries are members of the forum that accounts for nearly ninety percent of the territory and population of Asia.

The state minister for foreign affairs M Shahriar Alam conveyed the decision when Turkish ambassador in Dhaka Huseyin Muftuoglu called on him at his office on Wednesday.

Turkish foreign minister is the current chair of CICA.

China earlier invited Bangladesh’s President M Abdul Hamid to attend the summit on May 20-21 in Shanghai.

Alam, however, said foreign minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali would join the summit.

He said the foreign minister has already sent “a letter of intent” to the Turkish foreign minister about Bangladesh’s joining.

Turkey earlier expressed its willingness to support Bangladesh to be a member of CICA.

Turkey would inform the CICA Secretariat to put this intent of Bangladesh in the proceedings before the summit.

The final decision would be taken in the summit.

The junior minister recalled ‘friendly’ relations between Bangladesh and Turkey and said that there were scopes to improve two-way trade ties.

The two-way trade is currently more than $1 billion.

Bangladesh mostly exports jute products and imports live animal and animal products, food items, plastic and textiles.

Alam also requested Turkish ambassador to introduce direct flights between Istanbul and Chittagong, which he believed would help increase trade and commerce.
