ADB set to provide solar, wind-run combined power plants to BD
DhakaAsian Development Bank (ADB) will provide its newly innovated solar- and wind-run combined power plants to Bangladesh for the countrys power generation.This was disclosed by visiting ADB Vice President Xiaoyu Zhao when he called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office in Dhaka Sunday.
The ADB will provide two units of their new generation power plants to Bangladesh, which will be set up in the countrys remote areas as pilot project. The ADB offer of the renewable energy plants came as Bangladesh is reeling under severe power cuts.
After the meeting, Prime Ministers Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad told journalists that the ADB has further assured Sheikh Hasina about the fund it committed for the Padma Bridge. The Prime Minister told the ADB official that her government is committed to realizing its vision of a Digital Bangladesh and turning it into a middle income country by 2021, the golden jubilee year of the countrys independence.
She said the Padma Bridge is expected to give new momentum to economic activities of Bangladeshs south and southwestern region and will open up a new horizon for socioeconomic development of the area prone to natural calamity. Referring to the proposed deep sea port, Hasina said Bangladesh will allow its neighbors including China and India to use the port which will eventually bring benefit to the entire region.
She said the present democratic government attached due priority to establishing rule of law and promoting good governance in the country. Besides, the Prime Minister mentioned another thrust area for the government to encourage Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in materializing development efforts of Bangladesh.
She also said policy, strategy and guidelines of PPP have already been published in the official gazette and a new office for this will be established shortly under the Prime Ministers Office. Hasina thanked the ADB for being a responsive and conscious development partner of Bangladesh since it became a member of ADB in 1973. She requested ADBs assistance to Bangladesh for the development of infrastructure, power, transport, ports, river dredging and urban development for sustaining higher GDP growth rate.APP

I just wonder if it is worth to unify all the infrastructure related topics into one single thread. Watch the economic forum. There is only one thread. People keep on pouring information there. But, hardly there is any scope to make discussions on any single topic. So, this thread has become only a place to send news only with a little discussion value.
News can be read through the internet. So, what is the use of sending these to the PDF without little prospect for further comments from the PDF members. If there is no discussions, I think, there is no need to go to any forum.
In the economic thread many different topics are posted one after another, and it has become so long that it is very difficult to find out the proper topic when someone wants to post a comment on that.
I think, threads should be separated to keep their individual character intact. Even then a thread loses its attraction. So, it should be renewed with a separate title at the head.

Though Eastwatch has a good point....but still, we all know in our BD section any 'healthy' discussion is hardly seen....its all a political turmoil, just as the case in our country....hence, even in good news and updates, you will find posters ultimately ending up bashing each other....
Therefore, having something is better then nothing....even if we just compile the news in a thread and not discuss, there will be people who will at least go through them and know what they have to....
Its really funny but i would also like to add that, we may be the only group of people who are talking about infrastructure, education and political agendas in our defence section....look at the other sections, its a different scenario....even if there is no solid news, members post abstract/hypothetical topics and start discussing and it goes on fine....sad, we cannot do such a thing because at last we end up being called 'speculators' and 'trolls'....

It seems BD members are getting active in PDF. It's nice. If we can make a BD community of 50 members in PDF then it would be nice. We will fight and make friendship here. Can some invite a active BDgirl here? We have lack of that.

Why not doing PM Taimi Khan? He will do it.
In earlier he replaced Bangladesh Economy: News & Updates with Pilkhana Tragedy when I requested him.
Also I think long sticky list is also not attractive. SO I requested for replacement earlier. Whatever, you guys know well, no problem.
One thing: Post of improvements should be like something has done or started type of news, but not like some MP went to any meeting and told we will do it.

We are not supposed to be politicians in an international forum like PDF. This forum has allowed us to discuss about our own country. It is our duty to project our country in a positive light. But, quite a few people, who claim themselves as BD citizens, talk here as if they are against anything that is good for BD. These guys bash our country and then they bash those who disagree with them.
Now, I have found that many of BD citizens here just do not care any more to answer these BD-bashers. Unless they stop disgracing our country, I will not regret if someone does not respond to their continuous bashings.

Some BDmen think that giving transit to India is good economically for BD. And others think it's not good economically and politically or for future reasons. Make sure they have the right to say the bad sides of this transit.
Some people think that AL is building high-budget new Airport which is very good sign for BD. Others think that AL is doing it just to give a new name "BongoBondhu International Airport". Make sure how important is that airport. Others have right to criticize. Although some of them are little bit wrong sometimes but....

Karnaphuli Bridge to usher in trade, investment prospects
The newly-built Shah Amanat Bridge over the river Karnaphuli would usher in prospects in trade and industrialisation of the economically potential southern part of greater Chittagong linking the region with the country's main land.
The bridge, long-felt demand of nearly 7.5 million (75 lakh) people of adjacent three districts is no more a mere dream as it is scheduled to open to traffic ceremonially by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday just a couple of days ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.
Opening of the bridge to traffic will permanently link southern Chittagong with the country's main part, ease sufferings of the commuters of both sides of the river Karnaphuli.
The local people said the bridge would create opportunities for easy transportation of exportable goods including shrimps, dry fish, salt and vegetables from the region to other parts of the country.
In separate reactions to the news agency some locals, however, expressed a bit of dismay over non-completion of the approach roads before its formal opening to traffic.
Bangladesh government and Kuwait government under the banner of "Kuwait Fund" jointly financed the bridge project worth Tk 5.90 billion (590 crore) in which share of Kuwait Fund is Tk 3.72 billion (372 crore).
Ruling party lawmaker Akhteruzzaman Chowdhury, who is also the President of Chittagong South District Awami League, said the bridge, with construction of the proposed regional highway, would lessen 45-kilometre distance from the existing 158-kilometre Chittagong-Cox's Bazar road.
The bridge would save both money and time of the tourists from home and abroad while visiting a dozen of eye-catching tourist spots including the world's longest Cox's Bazar sea beach, lone coral island Saint Martin, Chimbuk Hill, Dulahazara Bangabandhu Safari Park, Banskhali Eco Park and Anwara Parki Beach, said a number of tourist guides.
Talking to the news agency, Chittagong Metropolitan Chamber and Commerce President Abdus Salam said the Karnaphuli Bridge is a long cherished demand of the people of Chittagong, which was completed by the present government within the time frame.
The chamber president also stressed on proper dredging and administration of the river Karnaphuli for saving navigability of the port channel. City Planner Engineer Ali Asharf said there was a vast potentiality of the bridge but apparently its full advantages are not available as approach roads are not completed properly.
Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, First Vice President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturer and Exporters Association (BGMEA) thanked the Prime Minister for her initiatives that include inauguration of four development projects in Chittagong at a time including long awaited Karnaphuli Bridge.
Shafiul Alam Badal, senior Vice President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the newly constructed Karnaphuli bridge would open up a new era for trade and communications linking with the proposed Asian highway.
The chamber vice president urged the government to shift the existing worn out Shah Amanat Bridge with its 7-set concrete pillars for maintaining navigability of the river.
Nurul Alam, a leading businessman and a resident of Banskhali, said the essential Karnaphuli Bridge would open a new avenue for setting up another industrial belt in southern Chittagong.

ABB boosts efficiency in Bangladesh 's national power grid
An ABB solution has improved the efficiency, reliability and quality of power supplies in the Bangladesh power grid, improving its power factor by 11 percent and enabling an additional 34 megawatts of electricity to reach customers - all with a payback time of 18 months.
The Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) selected ABBs solution to improve the performance of its 132 kV transmission grid, parts of which were suffering losses because of voltage drops and poor power quality.
Having analyzed the various technical options, from a number of vendors, PGCB opted for a reactive power compensation solution from ABB. The new equipment was installed in the eight PGCB substations where losses were greatest and power flows most critical.
The project was completed in March 2010 and within months the power factor had risen from 0.88 to 0.98 and voltage had gone up by 3 - 5 kV.
The optimal power factor in an electricity system is 1.0, so moving from 0.88 to 0.98 is a significant achievement. Raising the voltage of the system reduces losses and improves the rate at which power can be delivered to end users. In a 132 kV system, a change of 3-5 kV will make quite a difference.
The combined improvements in power factor and voltage delivered by ABBs solution brought the equivalent of 34 MW of extra power into the grid, without needing to build any additional generation capacity. The ability to deliver this much additional power has significantly improved PGCBs revenues.
The payback period for PGCBs investment is estimated to be 18 months.
The cost of the solution is a fraction - less than 15 percent - of the capital that would have been required to build a conventional fossil fuel power plant to produce this much power.
Additionally, because the ABB system recovers lost energy rather than generating new, there are no continuous operating costs and no greenhouse gas emissions.
