They would have had Khaleda Zia to rally them in 2014....Awami league invited all parties in election time govt last time. BNP could have been part of that too. And could have gotten army deployed with an unbiased COAS. BNP was sure to get more than 100 seats that time. Which would have given them considerable power in the parliament.

Dont need caretaker govt or anything...that is just tantamount admission that institutions in BD are not to be trusted. So it was skirting around the elephant in the room (bad compromised institutions) to go for easy fix (caretaker govt blah)...and so low hanging fruit for someone to eventually pick (like SHW did) for winner takes all in the end.

BD needs its people to put pressure on fixing institutions...its the only way. Otherwise they turn into political tools...when these are the things that should remain firmly apolitical more than anything else!

Yes, they didn't see the big picture....that it's OK to lose (its just one election, dont let short term "but its my turn" feelings obscure too much),.... and that you have to explore all the logic chains to hedge your bet well (to win elections at all later)...when someone has made their commitment to altering the status quo of electioneering in some way.

They went all in expecting a mass revolution or something...and SHW simply pulled out the economic-stability card etc and called that bluff easily (just keep everything chugging along, improve infra, power etc, spice up with propaganda where needed etc)...and now BNP played its last hand (of last possesions) on SHW terms....which is even more ridiculous (you basically have nothing even morally to show for the previous hand play where you bet the house but folded early)

It was frankly quite stupid and they (BNP) have to pay for it with their atrophying away now (if what skies saying pans out result wise). From the remnants maybe something better can arise and grow with time...and inevitably BAL will rest on its laurels and crumble too (it just doesnt have what it takes to handle a 21st century economy imo).

BD should not have just 2 political forces....it needs lot more so that actual advanced coalition engineering takes root in the country (because that is actually a big major thing that helps in creating better institutions to handle the political forces)...and there is an actual process of core debate and renewal...and enough pragmatic trust between political opponents to participate and win/lose well (rather than just it being winning and losing period).

It's hard to topple Hasina. She has made a position for herself. But she is old. BNP need to wait her out. And they need fresh leadership. Khaleda Zia is done and now Tareq Zia is a convicted in absence too. Fakhrul(currently leading BNP) is a fine gent. If he becomes opposition leader then in 5 years he will get much stronger. He also needs to get some young leaders behind him. Hasina will not rule forever. Taking the chance when Hasina is weak is BNP's best bet.

With fair enough overall process where every party representatives + neutral cadre (or even ppl that do not vote, that you identify thru voter rolls and you give them financial incentive to purely just observe and verify) randomly selected and assigned (so no question of buying them off earlier etc) to report on polling day conditions as they see it...it should not be an issue (and you can even probably get to a % level over time where the larger poll is deemed fair vs unfair...given how combinatorics and probability summations work). Basically a localised hedging system that goes well beyond the scale of "foreign observers"...but uses the intrinsic concept.

Like how many total polling booths nationwide are there would you say in a BD election? It starts with that number to design a system for what I am talking about...regarding the people and materials to get the required confidence interval (say 95% or even somewhat lower if needed at first) for a result.

For example in US in many states, when a vote count (or recount) is done of a district, there has to be party representatives from both major parties to observe the process...and they have to sign off on it as legitimate (without knowing the final result)....but they are of course far along the institutional road to begin with (but just to illustrate the basic idea).

In BD specific situation, having more than 2 major parties would add an extra layer of authenticity given you dont have just 2 parties that fit into binomial result (of yes/no for a booth being "fair")....just one example of why thats a good long term thing to strive for.

No they will not. Politics is like a movement against dowry ,but not in the correct way.
Here men will start this movement next year, not this year. Because this year is his marriage and next year is his sister's marriage.
Besides khaleda zia said before 15 February 1996 election that none but a baby and a mentally unstable person can be completely impartial. So caretaker govt is a flawed idea.

I have studied the power dynamics that go on in developing and developed countries too for a fair while (and there is only so much applicability of the fancier higher level works like those of Cicero, Machiavelli and Clausewitz)....it basically boils down in the end to how interested and knowledgeable and desiring are the people of a country towards their rights as citizens. The people outnumber the power-elite by vast proportions, its a force that is made unknown to them largely for an obvious reason....but some blame lies with them also not doing their bit to seek it out (esp when some basic optics/perceptions are ticked).

একাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনের ভোট গ্রহণ আজ রোববার সকাল আটটায় শুরু হয়েছে। চলবে বিকেল চারটা পর্যন্ত। এবারের ভোটে দেশের সব নিবন্ধিত রাজনৈতিক দল অংশ নিচ্ছে।

একাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনের তফসিল ঘোষণা করা হয় গত ৮ নভেম্বর। এরপর একবার পুনঃ তফসিল করা হয়। এর ফলে ভোটের তারিখ ২৩ ডিসেম্বর থেকে ৩০ ডিসেম্বর করা হয়।

৩৯টি রাজনৈতিক দল অংশ নিলেও প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা হবে মূলত আওয়ামী লীগ (নৌকা) ও বিএনপির (ধানের শীষ) মধ্যে। ভোটে আওয়ামী লীগ নেতৃত্ব দিচ্ছে মহাজোটের। ১৪ দলীয় জোটের নেতৃত্বেও আছে দলটি। আর বিএনপি আছে ২০ দলের নেতৃত্বে ও ড. কামাল হোসেনের জাতীয় ঐক্যফ্রন্টের প্রধান শরিক হিসেবে। সাধারণ মানুষের আগ্রহের কেন্দ্রবিন্দু হলো, কারা পরবর্তী ৫ বছরের জন্য দেশ পরিচালনার দায়িত্ব আসছে, রাষ্ট্রক্ষমতায় আসছে।
এবারও কী বর্তমান ক্ষমতাসীন আওয়ামী লীগ জিতছে না কি, তাদের প্রধান প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী বিএনপি জিতবে—এমন নানামুখী আলোচনার উত্তর পাওয়া যাবে আজই। বিকেল চারটা পর্যন্ত ভোট গ্রহণের পর শুরু হবে ভোট গণনা। এবারই প্রথমবারের মতো ছয়টি আসনে ইভিএমে ভোট হচ্ছে। ইভিএমে ভোট হবে ঢাকা-৬, ঢাকা-১৩, চট্টগ্রাম-৯, রংপুর-৩, খুলনা-২ ও সাতক্ষীরা-২ আসনে। এসব আসনে ভোট গ্রহণ শেষ হওয়ার দুই ঘণ্টার মধ্যে ফলাফল পাওয়ার কথা জানিয়েছেন নির্বাচন কর্মকর্তারা। তবে ব্যালটে ভোট হওয়া আসনগুলোর ফল পেতে কিছুটা সময় লাগবে। অবশ্য নির্বাচন কমিশনের কর্মকর্তারা আশা করছেন, রাত ১০ থেকে ১২টার মধ্যে পরবর্তী সরকার কারা গঠন করছে, সে সম্পর্কে জানতে পারবে সাধারণ মানুষ।

জাতীয় সংসদের ৩০০ আসনের মধ্যে একটি আসন (গাইবান্ধা-৩) ছাড়া বাকি ২৯৯টি আসনে রোববার ভোট গ্রহণ হবে। প্রার্থীর মৃত্যুর কারণে এই আসনে ভোট গ্রহণের নতুন তারিখ আগামী ২৭ জানুয়ারি নির্ধারণ করা হয়েছে।

সকালে ভোটকেন্দ্রে ঢোকার অপেক্ষায় ভোটাররা। ভোটকেন্দ্রের ফটকে ভোটারদের তল্লাশি নিয়ে নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করছেন পুলিশ ও আনসার সদস্যরা। আম্বরখানা কলোনী সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়, সিলেট, ৩০ ডিসেম্বর। ছবি: আনিস মাহমুদআওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতি প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা দলীয় নেতা-কর্মী ও সমর্থকদের শেষ পর্যন্ত ভোটকেন্দ্রে থাকার আহ্বান জানিয়েছেন। সম্প্রতি ভারতের আনন্দবাজার পত্রিকায় সাক্ষাৎকারে প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেছেন, তাঁরাই আবার ক্ষমতায় আসছেন। কেননা, জনগণ আওয়ামী লীগকেই চাইছে।

অন্যদিকে জাতীয় ঐক্যফ্রন্টের শীর্ষ নেতা ড. কামাল হোসেন বলেছেন, ভোটে কারচুপি না হলে তাঁরাই জিতবেন। তিনি ভোটকেন্দ্র পাহারা দিতে নেতা-কর্মীদের প্রতি আহ্বান জানিয়েছেন।

একাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন উৎসবমুখর ও শান্তিপূর্ণ পরিবেশে হবে বলে আশা প্রকাশ করেছেন প্রধান নির্বাচন কমিশনার (সিইসি) কে এম নূরুল হুদা। তিনি বলেছেন, ‘সর্বাধিক সংখ্যক প্রার্থী এবারের নির্বাচনে অংশগ্রহণ করছে। উৎসবমুখর ভোট হবে এটাই আশা।’ তিনি ভোটারদের নির্ভয়ে ভোটকেন্দ্রে এসে তাঁদের ভোটাধিকার প্রয়োগের আহ্বান জানান।

ভোটের পরিবেশ সুষ্ঠু রাখতে ৬ লাখ ৮ হাজার আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনীর সদস্য মোতায়েন করা হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে সশস্ত্র বাহিনী, পুলিশ, র‌্যাব, আনসার, কোস্টগার্ড, বিজিবি সদস্যরা রয়েছেন।

ভোটকেন্দ্র ও নির্বাচনী এলাকায় সেনাবাহিনী ও অন্যান্য আইনশৃঙ্খলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনীর মোবাইল ও স্ট্রাইকিং ফোর্স ভোটকেন্দ্রে নিয়োজিত ফোর্স সংখ্যা প্রায় ৬ লাখ ৮ হাজার। এর মধ্যে পুলিশ প্রায় ১ লাখ ২১ হাজার, আনসার প্রায় ৪ লাখ ৪৬ হাজার, গ্রাম পুলিশ প্রায় ৪১ হাজার। সেনাবাহিনী (প্রতি প্লাটুনে ৩০ জন) ৩৮৯টি উপজেলায় ৪১৪ প্লাটুন, নৌবাহিনী ১৮টি উপজেলায় ৪৮ প্লাটুন, কোস্টগার্ড (প্রতি প্লাটুনে ৩০ জন) ১২টি উপজেলায় ৪২ প্লাটুন, বিজিবি (প্রতি প্লাটুনে ৩০ জন) ৯৮৩ প্লাটুন, র‌্যাব (প্রতি প্লাটুনে ৩০ জন) প্রায় ৬০০ প্লাটুন ভোটের মাঠে নিয়োজিত আছে।

এ ছাড়া মোবাইল ও স্ট্রাইকিং ফোর্সের সংখ্যা (র‌্যাবসহ) প্রায় ২ হাজার প্লাটুন (প্রায় ৬৫ হাজার), এ ছাড়া সারা দেশে জেলা ও মেট্রোপলিটনে পুলিশের টহল দল নিয়োজিত রয়েছে।

নির্বাচনে নিয়োজিত ১ হাজার ৩২৮ জন নির্বাহী ম্যাজিস্ট্রেটের মধ্যে আচরণবিধি প্রতিপালনের জন্য ৬৫২ জন, অবশিষ্ট ৬৭৬ জন আইনশৃঙ্খলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনীর মোবাইল/স্ট্রাইকিং ফোর্সের সঙ্গে নিয়োজিত রয়েছেন। জুডিশিয়াল ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট ৬৪০ জন, ১২২টি ইলেকট্রোরাল ইনকোয়ারি কমিটিতে ২৪৪ জন।

এবার ভোটে রিটার্নিং কর্মকর্তা হিসেবে ৬৬ জন দায়িত্ব পালন করছেন। এর মধ্যে দুজন বিভাগীয় কমিশনার এবং ৬৪ জন জেলা প্রশাসক।
নির্বাচনে প্রিসাইডিং কর্মকর্তা ৪০ হাজার ১৮৩ জন, সহকারী প্রিসাইডিং কর্মকর্তা ২ লাখ ৭ হাজার ৩১২ জন এবং পোলিং অফিসার ৪ লাখ ১৪ হাজার ৬২৪ জন।

নির্বাচনে দেশি ৮১টি পর্যবেক্ষক সংস্থার ২৫ হাজার ৯০০ জন এবং ওআইসি ও কমনওয়েলথ থেকে আমন্ত্রিত ও অন্যান্য বিদেশি পর্যবেক্ষক ৩৮ জন, কূটনৈতিক/বিদেশি মিশনের কর্মকর্তা ৬৪ জন এবং বাংলাদেশে দূতাবাস/হাইকমিশন বা বিদেশি সংস্থায় কর্মরত বাংলাদেশি ৬১ জন নির্বাচন পর্যবেক্ষণ করবেন।

বিধিনিষেধ
নির্বাচন উপলক্ষে শনিবার মধ্যরাত (রাত ১২টা) থেকে ভোটের দিন দিবাগত মধ্যরাত (রাত ১২টা) পর্যন্ত বেবিট্যাক্সি/অটোরিকশা/ইজিবাইক, ট্যাক্সি ক্যাব, মাইক্রোবাস, জিপ, পিকআপ, কার, বাস, ট্রাক, টেম্পোসহ স্থানীয় যন্ত্রচালিত যানবাহন চলাচলে নিষেধাজ্ঞা জারি করা হয়েছে। একই নিষেধাজ্ঞা রয়েছে নৌযান চলাচলের ওপর।
এ ছাড়া ভোট সামনে রেখে শুক্রবার দিবাগত মধ্যরাত (রাত ১২টা) থেকে ১ জানুয়ারি দিবাগত মধ্যরাত (রাত ১২টা) পর্যন্ত মোট চার দিন সারা দেশে মোটরসাইকেল চালানোয় নিষেধাজ্ঞা রয়েছে। তবে ইসির স্টিকার লাগানো মোটরসাইকেল এই নিষেধাজ্ঞার আওতামুক্ত থাকবে।

যান চলাচলের নিষেধাজ্ঞার সময় রিটার্নিং কর্মকর্তার অনুমতি সাপেক্ষে প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী প্রার্থী ও তাঁদের নির্বাচনী এজেন্ট, দেশি-বিদেশি, পর্যবেক্ষকদের (পরিচয়পত্র থাকতে হবে) ক্ষেত্রে শিথিলযোগ্য। এ ছাড়া নির্বাচনের সংবাদ সংগ্রহের কাজে নিয়োজিত সাংবাদিক (পরিচয়পত্র থাকতে হবে), নির্বাচনের কাজে নিয়োজিত কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারী, আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনীর সদস্য, নির্বাচনের বৈধ পরিদর্শক ও কতিপয় জরুরি কাজ যেমন অ্যাম্বুলেন্স, ফায়ার সার্ভিস, বিদ্যুৎ, গ্যাস, ডাক, টেলিযোগাযোগ ইত্যাদির কাজে নিয়োজিত যানবাহনে নিষেধাজ্ঞা প্রযোজ্য হবে না।

এ ছাড়া মহাসড়ক, বন্দর ও জরুরি প্রয়োজনে সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষ নিষেধাজ্ঞা শিথিলের বিষয়ে কার্যকর ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করতে পারবেন বলে নির্দেশনায় উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।

I just want abolition of article 70 from our constitution. This is the real villain against democracy. Because of it, MPs become pet dogs of chairpersons of our major political parties ! I think many problems will be solved if article 70 will be abolished!

Yes in 6 seat they are using EVM experimentally .
The areas are, Dhaka - 6 and 13, ctg - 9, Rangpur -3, Khulna -2, satkhira -2.

Wow thats BS! So basically there is no need at all for a party whip! Its all basically enforced from the constitution itself...dayum.

Why not supreme court have a hearing on it and ask officially it be repealed?
