Bangladesh enjoying real democracy: Pyatt

Bangladesh enjoying real democracy: Pyatt

The United States described present democracy in Bangladesh as “real democracy” and highly appreciated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's leadership in strengthening the democratic institutions.

This was stated by Geoffrey Pyatt, principal deputy assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs of USA, during a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office yesterday morning.

Geoffrey Pyatt said USA also appreciated the government initiatives and achievements in countering terrorism and establishing peace, said Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad.

In reply, the prime minister thanked USA and other friendly countries for their supports to restore democracy.

She said her party and the government want a strong and pro-people opposition in and outside the parliament. “We want opposition party joins the parliament and play its role as a strong opposition,” said Hasina.

The assistant secretary of state also expressed US President Barack Obama's keen interest to work closely with the countries of the South and South Eastern Asia for expediting economic emancipation.

As Geoffrey Pyatt eulogized Hasina's role in tackling the global climate change, the prime minister sought the US government's assistances for Bangladesh in this regard. The prime minister also sought increased US investment in Bangladesh. Pyarr assured her of continuing investment here in larger volume.

Components other than general election are all missing in the Bangladesh society. Democratic institutions are not to be found in that country. So, Bangladesh cannot be called a democratic country. Rather, it is a country where democratically elected people rule by autocracy.

What kind of democracy we are following in our country ? Let's analysis the AL "marka" democracy in our country:

@ Though in paper our judiciary is indepedent but in practice all most all judges of High Court and Supreme Court including the Chief Justice are appointed on party affiliation.

@ In the civil administration, all the civil officers who once joined in the "Jonotar Munchu"(People's Satge in 1996) were given double promotion. On the other hand the talent and civil officers are made as OSD.

@ There is no freedom of press, whatever we see these are controlled press.

@ Police, RAB and other para-military forces all top and medium ranking officers are appointed on the basis of political affiliation.

@ In all the govt services only the AL's workers are recruited and it is open secret.

@ The qouta of "Mukti Juddha" and their decendants has been doubled in govt employments. Now the question are they really a real "Mukti Juddha", there is serious doubts ?

@ Now, if all these quatas are filled on the above line how come the common man will get a job ?

@ During the time of election, we have seen how forceably AL's cadres manipulates the election. And see how American people are praising Sk Hasina ?

Among the muslim country Bangladesh is the one of the country where some kind of democratic process is following . its also true that the judiciary is nor totally free from government intervention and press freedom is under questionable when a editor is arrested and tortured for publishing allegation of corruption by government but still we have to carry it forward so that no third power again poke nose i the democratic process .
the opposition party is always out of sangshad in pretext of non cooperation by govt. yet they should participate in the sanshad to continue the democratic culture further.

But, we still need to improve though the democratic practice restarted at the late 90's only. We are still moving on by trial and error basis. But, most people are still deprived of the benefits of present democratic practice in Bangladesh. Hoping for the best, but dont want anymore army rulling as we have seen them enough.

@ Gonjo. It is observed that most of the so called educated people of our country have the tendency to always criticise the army like Zia and Ershad. But if you critically analysis the situation of Bangladesh than you would see these are the two Generals who actually saved our country. Now discuss one by one.
You see how Zia came to power ? Once the nation was divided, army was divided, Indian military forces awaiting to attack, some soldiers freed Zia and put him on the power. In those days we had nothing everything were in shamble condition. We did not had much TV stations, no press, no good traffic system in Dhaka, all industries were closed etc. Soon, under his dynamic leadership we came up. Than what happened he was killed by Army. Who was behind the killing ??? Than Ershad came and he ruled for 9 years. But still people says his rule was far better. So, in the true sense it was these two Generals who put the train engine on the rail and still we are moving.

Saved by the generals? Stats show Foreign AID dependency on 1989 was upto 80% and now it is down to 2%. And, GDP Per capita/Nominal has the growth better in the 1991 - 2010 democratic era than the generals era.

In the last caretakers govt, we were stepped back for atleast 5-10 year. With Negative growth.

Democracy is must for us, last Caretaker govt proved we have two best options only Khaleda/Hasina.

And, They upholds democracy and growth not the generals sir.
