Bangladesh has extended the term of the $200 million loan given to Sri Lanka under a currency swap deal by one more year as the island nation faces severe economic crisis.

Bangladesh Bank directors took the decision in a meeting on Sunday, keeping the conditions for the loan unchanged, said the central bank’s spokesman Serajul Islam.
Bangladesh agreed the deal in May 2021 – its first loan to another country. Sri Lanka was supposed to repay within three months, but the term was extended several times at Sri Lanka’s request as the country’s economic crisis began to deepen.
Hit hard by the pandemic, rising oil prices and populist tax cuts by the government, the South Asian island's economy is in crisis now, with usable foreign reserves down to $50 million.

it seems we are going with the ''Chalo theekh hai'' approach, @Destranator hopefully they can offer something good in return.

We should be getting something in return beyond contractual interest for this. We do not owe lanka any favors.

Hey Iblis Mullah!! What if SL is unable to pay back? Learn from history how many tens of billions of dollars BD has been relieved from paying back to a few countries and don't talk like a Satan all the time.

Bloody cockroach from the Hell, you lack empathy. Get over this subhuman quality, idiot!!
Sod your empathy.... who are you as an indian islamaphobic hindutva to tell BD to be empathetic to a country who stood against BDs interest when we needed help.

Go distribute your money as you see fit, dont comment on what BD should do. Its none of your business.

yes maybe some access to port of Colombo until our own deep sea ports become operational.
Terrible timing. All the goodwill will be destroyed if we try to kick them when they are down. This will backfire massively as SL perceive BD as a hegemonic entity - all this for a pittance sum of $200 mn. Granted we do not owe anything to SL but we do owe ourselves a nation with more global influence. Let us not ruin the opportunity for short term gratification. Geopolitics is a slow, long term game - need patience.

I must say i see things differently. Lanka took an adversarial position against us during the rohingya crisis, it is the right time to teach them a lesson and exact concessions, but we must be more subtle, have a longer vision and keep the big picture right in front all the time.

We must not be sentimental nor brash. We must bargain hard in the background. They are not Maldives who are an entirely different proposition.

I see this as an opportunity and a fantastic use of $200m. As i said we owe them nothing and must advance our interest by hook or crook. Geopolitics is slow i agree but inaction is unfeasible.... we have the advantage, exact concession/prioritisation of BD cargo on their ports and sign an FTA that will at the very minimum equilise the trade imbalance. BD levarage can be used positively for the benefit of both nation, a deal under duress wont last.

At the moment lanka has a high tarrif and para tarrif wall against BD goods. We can insist they reduce these and let in BD pharmaceuticals, agri-products and manufactured goods. We can extend the currency swap deals so that we can our respective national banks accept taka and rupiah. Srilanka will get the cheapest products without exhausting hard currency and BD gets to increase trade. Similarly we can propose reduction of red tape for investors from each country and elimination of visa requirement.

SL is a small economy but they are wealthy. There are real synergies that can be achieved sectors such as tourism. Under normal circumstances Lanka might not have considered such move but they may now.

In this circumstances you must not overplay your hand.... but it would be criminal not to explore the art of the possible with the new reality. This is what i am proposing.

Idiot, by nature you are a narrow-minded Indian Hindu. Learn better things and don't indulge into Hindutva even though you are as Satan as a Hindu. Bloody idiot!!!

By your narrow and miser characters, you are a very heinous Indian false-flagger, a Sudra idiot!!
Sure that made a heck of a lot of sense.... no one here is in any doubt who is the hindutva moron banging on about issues without a clue.

Who but a hindutva idiot will call someone a sudra, a muslim certaintly won't. You give yourself away every time you write. I called you a halfwit earlier, that was an overestimation, you are a simple lack wit.

And, you are an idiot with a narrow mind just like other people of your Sudra Hindu. You are asking here to punish SL for no reason. You have little knowledge on international diplomacy. All bra bra————like another Iblis.

Good generosity from BD to help a fellow South Asian country in tough times
