Just for the record there are at least two "Khans" (originally a Turco-Mongol name later adopted by Pashtuns after they were conquered by Turco-Mongols and the original pronunciation was "Han" as in Atilla the Hun i.e. "Han") in the current Bangladeshi government. The protest organizers are clearly trying to make this a non-political event and one of the Awami leaders was not allowed to give a speech and politicize the event. All political posters promoting any political party has been banned. The article below in Bangla is quite interesting.

রাজধানীর শাহবাগ। চারপাশে প্রতিবাদী মানুষের ঢল। সময় তখন বিকেল সাড়ে পাঁচটা। যুদ্ধাপরাধী কাদের মোল্লার ফাঁসির দাবিতে চলছে তৃতীয় দিনের মতো প্রতিবাদ কর্মসূচি। সেখানে উপস্থিত হলেন আওয়ামী লীগের যুগ্ম সাধারণ সম্পাদক মাহবুব উল আলম হানিফ। ঘোষণা করা হলো, আন্দোলন ও প্রতিবাদের সঙ্গে সংহতি জানিয়ে বক্তব্য দেবেন তিনি।
এ সময় সভাস্থলে শুরু হলো হইচই। ঘটনার প্রত্যক্ষদর্শী সমাজতান্ত্রিক ছাত্রফ্রন্টের সাধারণ সম্পাদক প্রণব দেব রায় প্রথম আলো ডটকমকে বলেন, হানিফ বক্তব্য দেবেন, এমন ঘোষণার সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই উপস্থিত জনতা প্রতিবাদ জানান। তাঁরা ‘সরকারের সমঝোতার রায় জনগণ মানে না’, ‘আপসের রায় মানি না’ বলে স্লোগান দিতে থাকেন। এ সময় আওয়ামী লীগের নেতা হানিফ হাত নেড়ে জনগণকে থামানোর চেষ্টা করেন। কিন্তু জনগণের স্লোগান বাড়তেই থাকে। শুধু কাদের মোল্লা নয়, সব যুদ্ধাপরাধীকে ফাঁসি দিতে হবে বলে স্লোগান দিতে থাকেন তাঁরা। একপর্যায়ে সেখানে দাঁড়ানো আওয়ামী লীগের নেতার আশপাশে বেশ কয়েকটি পানির বোতল ছোড়া হয়।
ঘটনার একপর্যায়ে ছাত্রলীগ ও যুবলীগের কয়েকজন নেতাকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে সভাস্থল থেকে সরে যান মাহবুব উল আলম হানিফ। বক্তব্য না দিয়েই শাহবাগ থেকে চলে যান তিনি।

তাহলে ধরে নিতে পারি-পেছন থেকে আওয়ামী লীগই এই আন্দোলনে কলকাঠি নাড়াচ্ছে! এখন আমরা কি ছাত্রলীগের সোনার ছেলেদের খুন-খারাবি-টেন্ডারবাজি-দখলবাজির কথা ভুলে যাব। দুঃশাসনে সারাদেশের মানুষ চাইছে একটা পরিবর্তন, তার কী কিছুই হবে না?
এদিকে কাদের মোল্লার ফাঁসির দাবিতে শাহবাগে আন্দোলনকারীদের মহাসমাবেশে গতকালের ঘোষণা নিয়ে ফেসবুকসহ বিভিন্ন সামাজিক যোগাযোগের সাইট ও ব্লগে চলছে ব্যাপক আলোচনা। অনেক ব্লগার ও প্রতিবাদী যারা ৩ দিন থেকে শাহবাগ প্রাঙ্গণে গলা ফাটিয়ে প্রতিবাদ করেছে তারা ওই ঘোষণার পর থেকেই হতাশা ব্যক্ত করেছেন। তাদের ক্ষোভ এটা কেন রাজনৈতিক মঞ্চ হলো? এমন তো কথা ছিল না।
বাংলাদেশের সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় ও পঠিত প্রথম ব্লগ সামহোয়ার ইন ব্লগে আহসান আরও মন্তব্য করেছেন, আমরা যারা রাজাকারদের ফাঁসির দাবিতে শাহবাগ স্কয়ারের আন্দোলনের সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ত এবং যারা গত তিনদিন ধরে খেয়ে না খেয়ে এই শাহবাগে পড়ে আছে, তারা আজ সত্যিই হতাশ! আমাদের আশঙ্কা—এই আন্দোলনের ফসল আওয়ামী লীগের ঘরেই যাচ্ছে। কিন্তু আমাদের তো প্রত্যাশা ছিল-শুধু রাজাকারদের ফাঁসিই নয়, বরং এই বিজয় ধরে রাখতে পারলে এ তরুণরাই একটা নতুন বাংলাদেশ উপহার দেবে। এখানে বাংলাদেশ রাজনীতিকদের হাত বদল হবে।
তিনি তার ব্লগে হতাশার সঙ্গে লিখেছেন, শাহবাগের এ তারুণ্যের স্রোত ও সমাবেশে কোনো রাজনৈতিক নেতৃত্বের বক্তব্য দেয়ারই কথা ছিল না। অথচ আজ এ ব্যাপক মহাসমাবেশে বক্তব্য দেয়—ছাত্রলীগের সভাপতি বদিউজ্জামান সোহাগ। সঞ্চালনায় ব্লগার অ্যান্ড অনলাইন অ্যাক্টিভিস্ট নেটওয়ার্কের একজন কর্মীকে দেখা গেলেও তার আশপাশে মঞ্চজুড়ে ও সামনে ছিল ছাত্রলীগের নেতাকর্মীরা। দলীয় নেতাদের মধ্যে ছিলেন-ছাত্রলীগের কেন্দ্রীয় সভাপতি বদিউজ্জামান সোহাগ, সাধারণ সম্পাদক সিদ্দিকী নাজমুল আলম, মহাজোটের শরিক বাংলাদেশের ওয়ার্কার্স পার্টির ছাত্র সংগঠন ছাত্রমৈত্রীর সভাপতি বাপ্পাদিত্য বসু, মহাজোটের শরিক জাসদ ছাত্রলীগের সভাপতি হোসাইন আমহদ তাফসীর, ছাত্র ফেডারেশনের সভাপতি প্রবীর রায় প্রমুখ। আর মঞ্চের সামনে বিশাল জায়গা দখল করে ছিল ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, মহানগর উত্তর-দক্ষিণের শত শত ছাত্রলীগের নেতাকর্মীরা।
ব্লগার নাফিস লিখেছেন, ‘আমাদের তো প্রত্যাশা ছিল-শুধু রাজাকারদের ফাঁসিই নয়, বরং এই বিজয় ধরে রাখতে পারলে এ তরুণরাই একটা নতুন বাংলাদেশ উপহার দেবে। এখানে বাংলাদেশ রাজনীতিকদের হাত বদল হবে। কিন্তু এখানেও সেই গান্ধা রাজনীতি ঢুকল কীভাবে? সময় ছিল তরুণদের সামনে, নৌকা আর ধানের শীষের বিকল্প খুঁজে নেওয়ার...এ সুযোগকে আমরা হাতছাড়া করতে দিতে পারি না।’

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s special aide and Awami League leader Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif was thrown bottles at in Shahbagh Thursday afternoon.

bdnews24.com reporter said the Hanif arrived Shahbagh at around 5:30pm, willing to speak at the mass gathering of mostly youths demanding death verdict for Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Abdul Quader Molla.

But at one point, the AL Joint General Secretary was thrown bottles at and had to leave Shahbagh without saying a single word, said the reporter.

Awami League Presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury had visited Shahbagh Wednesday night, but returned without speaking a word.

However, several Awami League leaders have earlier visited Shahbag and expressed their solidarity with the protestors.

Prime ministerial advisor Toufique-e-Elahi Chowdhury expressed solidarity Thursday afternoon.

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 pronounced life in prison for Molla Tuesday.

An online activist body, Blogger and Online Activist Forum, rejected the verdict as ‘too light’ hours after the judgement was delivered and called for a protest at Shahbagh. Later, thousands of people joined the protest. The sit-in protest continued for the third consecutive day Thursday.

The protesters have announced a grand rally for Friday.

I would have to disagree with you there.

People can distinguish between average Pakistani or the Pakistani people - who did not vote for Yahya Khan - who had no personal involvement in war crimes with actual thugs who were personally involved in murder.

- There is no mention of current Pakistan in any speech aside from relevant mention of that state as pertaining to 71.

- No anti-Pakistani slogans such as "Pakistan murdabad"

- No burning of Pakistani flags.

- No rallying outside the Pakistani high commission.

- No demand for Pakistan to do anything even extradite Bachu Rezakar back, to condemn Zardari for supporting rezakars, a call for an apology. Nothing, absolutely nothing.

Abu_Zulfikar has previously called Bengalis traitors and has personally said he wrote to the Bangladeshi high commission in Karachi for all Bengalis in Karachi to be kicked out, so it is natural he tries to make this a Pakistan v Bangladesh thing. It isn't.

This isn't about India or so-called Indian "dalals"

This isn't about Pakistan.

This isn't about the Awami League.

This isn't about "Islamist" parties (there are around 4 other Islamic parties aside from Jamat and no one is calling for them to be banned).

I have to agree with you there. Players for their own sake (unless they do it in their own personal capacity as ordinary citizens/people) should not get involved in this. However if they all decided to this because of their passionate views on this topic then they should be able to and the only people offended will be the 4.6% minority in Bangladesh that support Jamatis, a few of whom are very active on this forum.

The other 95.4% of Bangladeshis will actually be happy.
