Faizan and Kanwel Shaheed describe the carnage after their aunt's grocery store was targeted

"They even took the ATM," Faizan Shaheed declared as he and his sister, Kanwel, were helping to nail plywood sheets over the shattered windows of their aunt’s small Pakistani grocery on Charles Street in the downtown area of Baltimore, just one of so many properties ransacked by rioters, who went on the rampage following the funeral of a young black man who died in police custory.

The shop, Annapurna Grocery and Gifts, came under attack from a small mob in the middle of the afternoon. They smashed the windows and double doors before stripping nearly everything they could find. All that was left last night were lines of stripped shelves, some onions and a few empty sweet boxes.

"They took all the cigarettes, even the sex pills," said Kanwel, referring to popular stimulant products typically found for sale in corner shops here. She couldn’t even say how the youths had managed to haul the ATM, or cashpoint machine, out of the building and make off with it. They had broken the windows by hurling a newspaper distribution box through them from the street. Her aunt, Shaheen Saleem, is just one of scores in Baltimore who saw their businesses ransacked as mobs ran amok across the city, even here in the downtown area that is normally a bustling commercial and tourist district and especially in parts of the northwest of the city.

"What is she going to do? This isn’t her fault. Is the city going to help her? She doesn’t even have insurance," said Kanwel, who said she left her children at home crying to come to help with the clean-up. "We wouldn’t even think that something like this could happen in Baltimore." She speculated that the young men may have targeted the shop because they knew it was owned by Pakistanis.

Faiazan Shaheed said he is convinced that the men that did this to his aunt were members of normally warring gangs who declared in a message to police earlier on Monday that they intended to unite to "purge" the city as anger continued to rage over the death over a week ago of a 25-year-old African-American man, Freddie Gray, seven days after being arrested by Baltimore police.
A CVS chemist outlet burns in Baltimore after it was set alight by rioters Before racing to his aunt's shop, he said he witnessed young black men gathering at a Baltimore petrol station near his home offering bottles of Grey Goose vodka, that they had presumably looted, for one dollar each. "I swear to God," he said. Packs of whiskey miniatures were being offered to passers-by for $2 each.

Freddie Gray's family appeal for calm amid riots The family believe that their losses will run to about $100,000. They hadn’t shared that figure with their aunt last night, for fear it would be too much for her. She had been ordered by police to leave the shop shortly before the mob entered it. When she returned an hour later she discovered the lost inventory and smashed windows. "She couldn’t even speak for 30 minutes, she was so overcome," her niece explained to The Independent.

"They were basically kids," said Mr Shaheed, "but I know that they all belonged to the gangs, the Crips, the Bloods and the Black Guerilla Family." Looters ransacked shops and torched police cars amid the unrest Her shop seemed to have been singled out. A few other businesses on the block had broken windows last night but were otherwise undamaged. Compared to some other shops in the city, including a large CVS chemists in the northwest area, maybe his aunt was lucky. But at least no one had set fire to her place.

Police, Protest, USA
A heavy National Guard presence and a draconian curfew have ended the rioting in Baltimore, but the popular uprising against police brutality has spread across the US. Peaceful protests are taking place in Baltimore and several major cities.

Preliminary Probe Leaks: No Evidence Cops Killed Freddie Gray During Arrest

According to a local ABC affiliate, an internal police investigation has found no evidence that Freddie Gray’s injuries stemmed from his arrest, and most likely occurred in transit in the back of the police vehicle.

A medical examiner’s preliminary findings suggest that the spinal cord injury which led to Gray’s death was likely caused by slamming against the walls of the police van. Wounds on the victim’s head also match bolts inside the vehicle, against which Gray may have bashed his head.

Chinese posters on here were cheering on the criminals until you realised you were a target.

If they had been paying attention to all other riots they would know. Sigh. When Baltimore riot happened, I knew exactly what going to happened. I believe I wrote somewhere on this forum that the USA just composed of many groups looking out for its own self interest. And this is one such example.

Hey what happened to this thread????

Hey what happened to this thread????

Your point in the first page is well noted. In Baltimore, they are even more restrained than usual. The mayor came out and say to give the protesters some space to protest (or riots). I actually think that is more of a problem but yeah. Outside of Fox News (a channel I hate), not too many condemn these sort of riots. I criticized viets who dance around the anti chinese riots too. But this is the cultural of this forum. The Chineses on here love to put America down and get too piss off even on the subject of cinema (though quite a few are reasonable). Much less anything else.

However the racial tension in the usa is very apparent. (Not talking about ancient history but just recent events). I don't know when it started. I suspect since the Trayvon Martin case. Both the liberals and conservative media fueling this tension.

As for the riot in China that you cited, I will be a hypocrite here. I am very thankful that I live in the USA. But I understand where China is coming from. The discussion of whether Xinjiang should be in China is a discussion for another time and I am certainly not certify to talk on the subject. But China have quite a few factions of separatist movements and don't have those restraint like the USA. If they showed weakness even for just one event, it will set quite a precedent for other groups.

China is very interesting for me in term of observing their treatment of the muslims. I want to know the long term impact of all these new legal policies. Human rights aside, if they successfully reduced their domestic terrorist/separatists attacks in the next few decades. Objectively, I supposed they are doing something right.

Since you are an American, I want to hear your opinion on how the media been covering this case.

Sensationalism leads to people reading/watching news sites and that in turn generates money. So they want traffic. They will play it up until the next story pushes it out of the way.

Apparently this cartoon contest shooting has already pushed it to the back page.

That story is very humorous. I found people don't understand what free speech meant. Then they said, well there are consequences of free speech like getting crazy people who drove by and do the shooting. Which is illegal and has consequences, lol 2 extremists die. I wish these people are more honest. If they gonna response with violent raise their hands up so the government can keep watch of all of them.

Sigh, spent the last few days arguing with the people on my political spectrum (the liberals) over Baltimore. Some of them are just so dense on the head.

we are gonna see more China and U.S pissing each other often,

its like two small kids playing see-saw, only now it is the time when China is ascending and U.S is descending :D
