Bajaj Auto launches low cost car RE 60, promises 40 km per litre

Bajaj Auto, a listed two-wheeler and three-
wheeler company, announced the launch of RE
60, an ultra-low cost car. The company claims
that the car would have a mileage of close to 40
km per litre and will have an 800 cc engine.
The car will be launched in 2012. However, the
car might be exported first before it is available
here in India.
“We could launch the four wheeler first in Sri
Lanka,” said Bajaj.
The engine is a new water cooled DTSi 4 (Digital
Twin Spark Ignition) valve and would give a
maximum speed of 70km per hour. The car has
a seating capacity of four people. It has been
designed and developed fully by Bajaj Auto and
not with Renault or Nissan Motors
Rajiv Bajaj, MD at Bajaj Auto, made the
announcement and said that the engine for the
car is state-of-the-art and environment friendly. It
is frugally engineered, he added.
“RE 60 will be produced at three-wheeler plant in
Aurangabad,” Bajaj said, adding that it will be
ready for production in the coming months.
He was speaking at a press conference in New
Delhi on the eve of Auto Expo 2012, the biggest
auto show in India.
"We have developed a four wheel vehicle with
mileage of nearly 40 km / litre. The car emits
carbondioxide of just 60 gm per km," he told
reporters.
Bajaj Auto is known for its two wheelers and
three-wheelers. The company is making a four-
wheeler for the first time.
However, the company could sell the car to
Renault or Nissan Motors with minor
modifications if they wish.
“We are free to brand our own four wheeler and
sell it anywhere in the world,” Rajiv Bajaj said.
Tata Nano is currently the cheapest car in the
world. Bajaj Auto has not disclosed the pricing.
Bajaj Auto shares were trading flat after slumping
8 per cent in trade on Monday. The December
2011 sales data was below expectation.
Rajiv Bajaj said that Bajaj Auto would end the
current fiscal with exports of Rs 6,500 crore
representing nearly 1.6 million vehicles. He also
said that it is extremely rare to find a car
company with profit of over 10 per cent.
“We are Apple kind of company. We believe in
making niche products; we are an 'anti car'
company. We are 2, 3 and 4 wheeler company
and in this space, our investment can't be
anywhere near a car company, investment closer
to what one would invest as 2 or 3 wheeler
maker,” said the Bajaj honcho.

Compare with REVA's two new electric cars.

Then again, it's supposed to be cheap..

Does it seats 4 people??might replace autorikshaws..what is the price???

This is supposed to be a replacement to the auto-rickshaw, even as per Bajaj. They don't claim it to be a car. It even has a fare meter built into the dashboard.

The company's managing director, Rajiv Bajaj, himself said it did not wish to make a car. "Certainly this is a product for which core customers are those who use a three-wheeler," he said. The RE60 base model comes with an integrated digital fare meter in the dashboard.

So, RE60 can at best be compared to the 3 wheeler auto-rickshaw.

That would be great.

Glorified Rickshaw??
mostly yes.. Bajaj Auto is quoting this as four wheeler not Car.. like Two wheeler (bike) and Three Wheeler (auto rickshaw).
It is good option to replace old aging auto rickshaws from street .. this one is more safer and convenient for passenger and might add extra passenger.. (current limit in Mumbai is three adult..with one heavy weight .. damm man you will go with only two passenger).. but auto rickshaw they have to come up with CNG version at least for Mumbai...
Any way this is high time to change those auto rickshaws with 25 years old technologies..

Bajaj RE60 four-wheeler: ‘Not a car’

It may have four wheels but the Bajaj RE60 isn’t a car, according to its Indian manufacturer.

At its unveiling at the 2012 New Delhi Auto Expo, Bajaj Auto Ltd managing director Rajiv Bajaj said the boxy RE60 would create a new market in the subcontinent when it goes on sale around the middle of the year.

“This is not a car but a four-wheeler vehicle, which is a new segment in its own right,” Bajaj told The Times of India. “We have put in a lot of technology and features which are not in three-wheelers or even cars.”

The RE60 is expected to undercut the price of the Tata Nano – currently the cheapest car in the world, starting at approximately $2700 in India – although Bajaj denies the cut-price hatchback (estimated to cost around $2200-$3500) has been designed to take on the Nano.

“We are looking at the customers who currently operate three-wheelers to shift to this four-wheeler low-emission segment.”
The Indian manufacturer – which until now has only produced two- and three-wheeled vehicles – started work on the small-car project four years ago in partnership with the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

Measuring just 2752mm long, 1312mm wide and 1650mm tall, the Bajaj RE60 will become one of the smallest four-seaters in the world. It also promises to be one of the most efficient. Powered by a 15kW rear-mounted 200cc engine (capable of running on petrol, compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas), the RE60 will use around 2.8 litres of petrol per 100km and emit 60g/km CO2. The 400kg hatch has a top speed of 70km/h.

Bajaj’s marketing of the RE60 could be the key to its success in India and in other developing markets. The Nano has struggled to take hold in India, partly because Tata has trumpeted that it is ‘the world’s cheapest car’ – a trait that domestic customers have found a less than desirable.

Bajaj – currently the biggest seller of three-wheeled passenger vehicles in India – is hopeful the four-wheeled RE60 will gradually overtake this market.

It is not a personal vehicle then, we were unnecessarily cursing bajaj then.
It is better than dangerous autorickshaws.
