BAE System is hiring Engineers for the TF-X program

The bold part is coming from the mentality, contrary to you I believe Turkish can compete with the west in engine technology, it might not soon, but they will reach that level inshaAllah. Dont forget Qatar financial backing as well in Turkish engine project.

There is proposal from Kale and RR to develop TFX engine but Turkey rather chose F 110 that is currently mass produced under license (although critical parts are produced in US). Maybe to develop new engine by using F 110 as a base will give Turkish better path to reach independency in the future. I dont know why they reject Kale-RR proposal but it may be because of that.

I think it was due to tech transfer that RR was not willing to provide.

Erdogan pushing Islamism there isn't a lot of Turkish students willing to study science and technology in university.

Ironically, head designer of Turkish drone program is a good patriot and Erdogan's son in law, also "islamist". Moreover he organizes annual "Teknofest" technology fair to encourage Turkish students to join with their projects for competitions in the field of robotics, AI, drones, rockets, software, model satellites etc. Winners get prizes and funding for the projects.

Sorry but I do not think Turkey has any chance of using it’s own engine in TFX.
It will always be reliant on foreign engines.


Bro, Turkish engine institutes are working on most advanced US and European engine programs as manufacturing partner. They have been manufacturing most difficult dynamic engine components for not only US fighters but also airliners so Don’t be pessimistic for Turkish engine programs.

Besides, When SSB issued tender for Tf-X engines, Two contender participated for it. RR/Kale JV (TAEC) and TEI. TAEC promised advanced know-how transfered from RR but TEI promised to develop an F-110 equivalent turbofan having a thrust level around 30000lbf within 14 years (from scratch). Can you see the the confidence level TEI has reached ? TEI didn’t make fun with this offer. They have tech and maturity coming from old experiences that they have been still working.

TEI is manufacturing the most critical sections of revolutionary LEAP engine. TEI has around 4 billion $ work volume in LEAP engines as being the best supplier of the World (selected by GE and Safran)

F110 equivalent possible within 15 years.

F119 equivalent possible within 20-25 years.

The problem is that the USA and UK will have better than F119 within 15 years. TFX would need better than F119 performance to be competitive for it’s time.

By all means Turkey should pursue it’s own F110 equivalent to slowly over many many decades catch up with the leaders, but it should also work with the current leaders to co-develop a world class engine to make TFX a competitive fighter when it comes into service.

Bro, Indeed they will develop engines that will fit their new concepts but “Better” is a relative describtion. Turkey is going to develop an engine which is going to meet all requirements of current aerial warfare environment;

-Low by-pass ratio for super cruise ability
-Stealth nozzle characteristics for 5th generation aircrafts
-Relatively powerful thrust ratio at 118cm diameter engine class
-5000h overhaul period ( It was reported that TEI-TS-1400 turboshaft has 2500h at present)

In this aspect, When TurAF required new features within 20 years, Turkish institutes will proceed to add more features on existing engine platforms and continue to provide their best. The issue is that TFX will be coming into service at a time when next gen fighters from USA/UK are likely to be imminently put into service.

If RR are willing to work with Turkey to co-develop the 6th gen engine, then Turkey should go for it. In parallel Turkey develops the F110 and later on a F119 class engines with of course some of the features of 6th gen engines if that is at all possible.

The right balance needs to be struck between indigenous fighter aircraft development and not compromising performance.
