Bangladesh’s position has gone down sharply from the top in terms of curbing corruption losing one score indicating that the country’s corruption scenario deteriorated, according to Transparency International’s annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released on Wednesday.

However, Bangladesh maintained its 13th ranking from the bottom as in 2011 (183 countries) though it slipped by 24 steps to 144th place out of 176 countries this year from the top which is a “matter of concern”.

On a scale of 0 to 100, Bangladesh scored 26, the report said mentioning that Bangladesh loses 1 score.

Executive director of Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) Dr Iftekharuzzaman unveiled the annual CPI at Brac Centre Inn.

TIB Trustee Board chairperson advocate Sultana Kamal and its member M Hafizuddin were also present on the occasion.

“…it appears that the depth of corruption is worrying…but there’s no reason to think that Bangladesh is a corrupt country…country’s all people aren’t corrupt though graft is a barrier to economic growth and removal of poverty,” Iftekharuzzaman said.

He urged the government to take effective steps to get the country out of this perturbing position.

Iftekharuzzaman said the country or its people in no way be branded as corrupt for the graft practices of powerful people and failure of the country’s leaders and related institutions to curb it.

Sultana Kamal said, “The poor people of the country become the worst sufferers when there are corruption, irregularities and injustice. The duty of any responsible citizen is to help government prevent corruption.”

She said the mass media and different non-government organisations, including civil society, will have to play a more responsible role.

The report shows Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo Republic, Syria and Ukraine also held the same position with Bangladesh from the bottom.

Denmark, Finland and New Zealand are the least corrupt countries having scored 90 each.

Sweden was in the second position with 88 while Singapore secured the third position with a score of 87.

The lowest position from the bottom has jointly gone to Somalia, North Korea and Afghanistan with only 8 score.

Sudan and Myanmar held the second and third position respectively from the bottom with 13 and 15 score.

Among the South Asian countries, Bangladesh has become sixth from the top and second from the bellow this year.

Bhutan is the least corrupt country in South Asia while Afghanistan is the most corrupt.

The Berlin-based global civil society group, campaigning against corruption, has been publishing the report every year since 1995. The report was published in Dhaka as well in other countries simultaneously today.

you and your big brother Pakistan are neck and neck...right next to each other Pakistan at 139 and Bangladesh at 144. Not that we are any better at 97. Sri Lanka and China are placed little better at 79 and 80. Whole of South Asia except Bhutan at 33 sucks big time.

Denmark, Finland and New Zealand are numero uno.

Massive corruption gone up in Bangladesh BUT Bangladesh position slipped, that must be joke.
It does not require TIB to say level of Awami league corruption crippled the country. This is needless to say Awami League regime came to power with indian money and supported by india for indian benefit at cost of Bangladesh. So bulk of these corruption charges goes to indian shoulder. For indian not only they have their own corruption but also propagated massive corruption in Bangladesh through Awami League.
