A photograph purportedly dating back to 1991 has gone viral on social media, showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi standing alongside BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi supposedly in Ayodhya during the peak of the Ram temple movement.

The lensman, Mahendra Tripathi, who claims to have clicked the rare photograph used to run a studio alongside Ramjanmabhoomi.

Talking to TOI, Tripathi said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the disputed site in April 1991 along with Murli Manohar Joshi. I was the only photographer in Ayodhya working for VHP and I had the privilege to click the historic frame.

Some journalists were also present and Murli Manohar Joshi introduced Modi to reporters as a BJP leader from Gujarat. When I and also some local journalists asked Modi Ji when he would return to Ayodhya, he replied, I will come back when the construction of Ram Mandir will begin.” The prime minister has kept his word, said Tripathi.

However, he complained though he was working as a photographer for VHP since 1989 and his photographs were part of the Ayodhya verdict, the Ram Mandir Trust did not invite him to the Bhoomi pujan ceremony.
