Awami League Terror Legacy - New Generation of Awami terror godfathers are in making

AL MP sued for murder

Ruling Awami League lawmaker Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shaon was sued on Wednesday on charges of killing Juba League leader Ibrahim Ahmed in the capital on Friday evening.
Ibrahim, an Awami League ward 56 unit activist who was an aspirant for the position of councillor in the forthcoming Dhaka City Corporation polls, was brought dead to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday night. His widow Rina Akhter suspected her husband had been murdered.
The victim’s brother Masum Ahmed filed the case with a Dhaka court accusing the lawmaker, seven others and some eight to 10 unnamed people of killing his brother.
In the case statement, the plaintiff alleged all the accused were involved in the ‘pre-mediated murder’ of his brother.
After hearing the plaintiff, the chief metropolitan magistrate, Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, took cognisance of the case and stayed the proceedings of the case till the submission of an inquiry report of the unnatural death case filed in connection with the killing with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police on Saturday.
The court also asked the Detective Branch to submit a report on the progress in the investigation of the case.
After filing the case, Masum said it was a ‘pre-meditated’ killing. ‘We have filed the case with the court as the police had refused to record any case against the lawmaker. We want a fair investigation of the killing.’
After filing the case, the plaintiff’s lawyer Enamul Haque Khan said eight people, including the lawmaker, have been named accused in the case.
‘Eight people, including Nurunnabi Shaon, have been named accused in the case. A number of unnamed people have also been named accused,’ the lawyer said.
The Detective Branch, meanwhile on Wednesday, interrogated three people, including Shaon’s personal secretary Mohammad Sohel and gunman Delwar Hossain, in this connection.
Detective Branch assistant deputy commissioner Moniruzzaman said they had interrogated Shaon’s personal secretary and bodyguard in connection with Ibrahim’s killing. The police official, however, declined details in the interest of investigation.
The police will further interrogate Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shaon in connection with Ibrahim’s killing in a day or two, sources said.
Earlier on Tuesday, another member of the family told New Age they had asked the police to record a murder case against the lawmaker but the police refused to do so, saying that they would require government permission to record any case against a member of the parliament.
Ibrahim’s family also alleged they were under pressure not to file a case against Shaon.
The court on Wednesday allowed the police to examine the evidence such as fingerprints on the pistol and the car owned by Shaon which the police seized after Ibrahim’s death.
The Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police officer-in-charge, Reaz Hossain, told New Age on Monday evening, ‘We have received a court permission to examine the pistol and the jeep seized from the lawmaker. We will submit the evidence to the Criminal Investigation Department soon,’ he said.
The police also interrogated Kamal Hossain, who filed the case of unnatural death on Saturday with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police saying an accidental shot had killed Ibrahim when he was handling the lawmaker’s pistol.
Shaon’s bodyguard Delwar Hossain and associate Mohammad Jewel were also interrogated by the police in connection with the accident, the officer-in-charge said.
Shaon and his driver Kamal could not be reached for comments despite several attempts.
Ibrahim’s widow Rina on Saturday said her husband had gone to the house of Nurunnabi on Friday afternoon for iftar. He was then brought dead to the hospital at night. She suspected that he had been murdered.
Ibrahim’s brother said he was an activist of Ward 56 unit Awami League and was planning to contest the forthcoming Dhaka City Corporation polls for the position of councillor.

Bangladesh Chhatra League activists assaulted journalists who were covering vandalism carried out by the activists at the physics department of Rajshahi University on Tuesday as one of their fellows failed first year final exams. The failed student, Nasim Ahmed Setu, also pointed a pistol at the journalists. His fellows, however, snatched away the pistol before he could pull the trigger, witnesses said.

The activists of the ruling Awami Leage-backed student organisation also forced photojournalists to delete the photos they had snapped during the vandalism.

The witnesses said that around 30 to 40 activists led by its Rajshahi University unit Chhatra League unit organising secretary Touhid-al-Tuhin and Madar Bux Hall unit president Tanim Ahmed and deputy library affairs secretary Nasim Ahmed Setu vandalised five chambers of the physics department teachers including its chairmen Mushfikur Rahman at around noon.

They assaulted Sakaler Khabor and Janakantha photojournalists Azhar Ali and Selim Jahangir respectively as they snapped the vandalism.

They also assaulted RU correspondents Nazim Mridha of New Age, MA Sayeed Shuvo of Daily Star and Sujon Najeer of Sakaler Khabor, who tried to rescue the photojournalists. The department chair, Mushfikur Rahman, confirmed the incident and said Nasim had scored 2.14 grade points, while the pass mark was 2.50 grade points.

Nasim dropped out of the department automatically as he had failed the first year final exams twice, Mushfikur added. Nasim alleged that the teachers had not given him sufficient marks in tutorial exams and class attendance. Ru Chhatra League president Ahmed Ali apologised to the journalists and requested not to publish reports about the incident.

Rajshahi University Journalists Association and different social, cultural and political organisations condemned the incident and demanded punishment of the Chhatra League activists.

The proctor, Chowdhury Mohammad Zakaria, said that stern actions would be taken against the perpetrators. Earlier, different newspapers had published photos, which showed that Nasim was firing bullets during a clash between the Chhatra League and Chhatra Shibir at the university on October 2, 2012.
