Aukus: UK, US and Australia launch pact to counter China

Global war of words over China: Furious France says it has been 'stabbed in the back' by UK-US defence pact to take on Beijing by building Australia's nuclear-powered submarines - which will be BANNED from New Zealand

The French (of all people) are complaining of being "stabbed in the back" over this deal !!!

They have not decided on whether the foundation will be the Astute or the Virgina class - given the leverage USA has, it will most likely be Virgina. The Aussies will have to work out the operating costs relative to their requirements, and where i think Astute will have the edge being a newer design.

.
India already has nuclear submarines

US also gave Australia AIM120Ds, the only country other than US operating this long range AMRAAM.

Apparantly Australia is a new major weapon market for US where as India will be a mini/potential/emerging one since US doesn't like Saudia Arab in real. They now chose Australia as EU countries are getting more independent in making their decisions and relies more on their own technology. F-35 perhaps may well be the last joint production project under NATO umberella. Australia will be the new milking cash cow for the Americans in the name China.

Australia can deter China with nuclear submarines, long range cruise missiles and nukes

The French are NOT happy 8-) ...

Why they need to do that ? Is China surrounding Australia for a potential showdown. Surely Australia China relations are not like Pak-India. This is deliberate war mongering fear created by this Biden administration from day first in order to find new weapons market as NATO countries more and more getting less dependent on US.

if china can cut off trade relationship in an arbitrary manner and can occupy South China Sea there is nothing that stops them

China/Australia population ratio is 60:1. it is not like India-Pakistan more like India-Nepal

LOL France is always on the receiving end. Few years back it was Russian Mistral deal and now this one. Luckily they managed to fool Indians though US tried their best to woo Indians in the name of make in India F21/F16V deal and scuttle Rafales deal too.

Block 3,4 or 5 Virginia class would offer the Virginia Payload Module with the potential for a more varied payload than the Astute including ballistic/hypersonic missiles.

Cutt Trade relationship with whom ? It was Trump who was fighting tariff wars with China and forcing other countries like Australia to get tougher with China. China had to responsed back. American interference was the root cause of all this crap at first place. And What do you mean by occupying South China sea ? Don't exagerrate. PLAN is not the Navy which it used to be 2 decades ago obviously now China will be more militarily visible. Its not only US right to send aircraft carriers at every corner of the world. Clearly US is selling/creating anti-china hysteria.

. .
I guess president Xi of China did not bend to the dictates of Biden in his 2 hour pleading phone call to rescind the Belt and Road and stop growing!!!... So this is the ex-super power lashing out...

Actually during the phone call to Xi, Biden suggested that both of them meet face to face BUT Xi politely refused the offer.

Joe Biden’s suggestion of summit with Xi Jinping falls on deaf ears
They kicked out India from these goodies???... Or is India in the Quad just a 3rd class coolie?

I say this is racism!...

Also called 'Chamar' of the QUAD.

USA and Australia are two different countries

Exaggeration over South China Sea ?? Ask the South East Asians

As a neutral defence observer. I say excellent decision by Australia. Having eight such subs which can carry dozens of cruise missiles which have range of 1600 KM or more is the best thing they could have done. Now if they also induct ships with same capability that would be great.

As expected... the French is pissed that they suddenly just lost the project they had worked for so hard and so long... 🤪 I wonder if there are penalties the Aussies needs to pay up for this..?

French Government, Naval Group React To Australia’s Decision To End Attack-Class Submarine Program
Naval News Staff 16 Sep 2021

Following yesterday’s announcement that the Australian Government will no longer be proceeding with the Attack Class Submarine Program, France’s Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Defense issued the following statement:

France takes note of the decision just announced by the Australian government to stop the “Future Submarine Program” ocean-class submarine program and to launch cooperation with the United States on nuclear powered submarines.
It is a decision contrary to the letter and the spirit of the cooperation which prevailed between France and Australia, based on a relationship of political trust as on the development of an industrial and technological base of defense of very high level in Australia.
The American choice which leads to the removal of an ally and a European partner such as France from a structuring partnership with Australia, at a time when we are facing unprecedented challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, whether on our values or on respect for multilateralism based on the rule of law marks an absence of coherence that France can only observe and regret.
While the joint communication on the European strategy for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region is being published today, France confirms its desire for very ambitious action in this region aimed at preserving the “freedom of sovereignty” of everyone. . The only European nation present in the Indo-Pacific with nearly two million of its nationals and more than 7,000 soldiers, France is a reliable partner which will continue to keep its commitments there, as it has always done.
The regrettable decision just announced on the FSP program only reinforces the need to raise the issue of European strategic autonomy loud and clear. There is no other credible way to defend our interests and values in the world, including the Indo-Pacific.

French shipbuilder Naval Group issued the following statement:
Naval Group takes note of the decision of the Australian authorities to acquire a fleet of nuclear submarines in collaboration with the United States and the United Kingdom.
The Commonwealth decided not to proceed with the next phase of the program. This is a major
disappointment for Naval Group, which was offering Australia a regionally superior conventional
submarine with exceptional performances. Naval Group was also offering Australia a sovereign
submarine capability making unrivalled commitments in terms of technology transfer, jobs and
local content.
For five years, Naval Group teams, both in France and in Australia, as well as our partners, have given their best and Naval Group has delivered on all its commitments.
The analysis of the consequences of this sovereign Australian decision will be conducted with the Commonwealth of Australia in the coming days.
Not surprised they got left out, this what happens when you try to fleece your customers, they have done that to India on the Rafael deal and now were trying the same on the Australian sub deal unlike India, Australia did well to get a better deal by going out to others.

.
This also means that if the Shortfin Barracuda platform "did" take off and was succesful then it could have been another platform that India could have inducted - and now that route has been cut off unless of course the French attempt to fund and complete it themselves.

Germany is developing the Type 216 - Maybe the Germans and the French can get on some "EU loving" and combine their projects to produce a new generation of conventional submarines - a bit like their "Euro-Tank" project and their "FCAS" project.

Even if the Aussies chose the Virgina class - it is still good news for the interests of the UK from an industry perspective.
