Aukus: UK, US and Australia launch pact to counter China

Type 095 makes Yasen look like a joke. Yasen still lacks pump jet which Type 095 has.

LOL according to Wikipedia article Yassen has pump jet or will have, and Pump jet is not all thing, they have far far ahead from you in term anneholic tile ( sonar absorbing tiles), avionics of sub and noise reduction technologies, USN clearly states that Yassen is the biggest Threat to USN in world oceans

Nope. Borei has pump jet. Yasen does not. You see it's got a propeller at the back end.

I don't understand, if the US defends Australia, what's the point of Australia running nuclear submarines alone?

If the US will not defend Australia,What is the point of Australia running its own nuclear submarines ?

If there really is going to be a military alliance, it makes sense for Australia to invest in its own military bases and have more Americans stationed there. And then let the Australians go directly to US military training. I think it's more combative.

Is this another story about how to make money?

.
After US defeat in Iraq/Syria and Afghanistan, they want to build up a new block against China in the East making Australia the guinea pig.
Now they have 3 Guinea pigs, India, Taiwan and Australia to look after their interests in Asia & East Asia while sitting across the globe.

It doesn't matter that it has Pump jet or not, but it is far more advance than your upcoming Type 95, China is quite new for development of nuke subs ( since late 80s (Type 92 class, Xia class)) Russia is developing Nuke subs since mid 50s, so tell us who has more experience?? and USN clearly states that Yassen will be threat for USN not any Chinese subs
And at last your all previous class of nuke subs is based on Russian/soviet design (Type 91 Han class/ Type 93 class) as well as your Conventional subs are bases on Russian/Soviet design like your latest Type 41 Yuan Class, which is inspired/based or Russian Kilo class lol

ASEAN / Indonesia should just dump the SEANWFZ treaty.. it's obviously not going to work now since everyone in the neighborhood is going to have nuke subs passing under ASEAN waters... we should strive for nuke subs as well... That being said... I feel kinda sorry for the French, they have been working so hard to win this project... and now they were just dumped like that.. 😅 Japan is probably quietly smirking in the corner... 😆

Nah, PT PAL Director is right, better develop cheap and numerous unmanned midget submarine with torpedos/missile.

Australia, the US and the UK have announced an historic new defence pact, proposed as the AUKUS alliance, in response to an increasingly "complex" Indo-Pacific.

The pact will will also see Australia acquire its first fleet of nuclear-powered submarines.

The first priority of the "next generation" partnership will be to deliver a nuclear-powered submarine fleet, Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed in a joint virtual media conference with US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The fleet will be built in Adelaide, with the new AUKUS partnership to determine the way forward in the next 18 months.

While Australia's new submarine fleet will be nuclear powered, they will not be armed with nuclear weapons.

The move is expected to see Australia scrap a $90 billion deal with French submarine maker Naval Group struck in 2016.

Mr Morrison said Australia was not seeking to acquire nuclear weapons or develop a civil nuclear capability.

Mr Morrison said AUKUS was a response to an increasingly "complex" Indo-Pacific.

"This affects us all," he said.

"The future of the Indo-Pacific will impact all our futures.

"To meet these challenges, to help deliver the security and stability our region needs, we must now take our partnership to a new level."

Mr Morrison did not directly mention the Chinese government in his comments.

"This will be one of the most complex and technically demanding projects in the world," Mr Johnson said.

"Lasting for decades and requiring the most advanced technology."

Mr Johnson said Australia was a "kindred nation" to the UK.

He said the decision to acquire nuclear submarines, which only a handful of countries possessed, was a "momentous decision".

All three leaders hailed the strength of the Australia-US-UK alliance.

Mr Morrison said the three nations saw the world through a "similar lens"

"We have always believed in a world that favours freedom, that respects human dignity, the rule of law, the independence of sovereign states and the peaceful fellowship of nations," he said.

"And while we've always looked to each other to do what we believe is right, we have never left each other."

He labelled Mr Johnson and Mr Biden "great friends of freedom".

Mr Johnson said AUKUS was a "new chapter" of the countries' existing friendship.

"The UK, Australia and the US will be joined even more closely together, reflecting the measure of trust between us, the depths of our friendship and the enduring strength of our shared values of freedom and democracy," he said.

"Australia is one of our oldest friends, a kindred nation and a fellow democracy and a natural partner in this enterprise."

Mr Biden said the three nations had fought together for "more than a century".

"This is about investing in our greatest source of strength, our alliances, and updating them and to better meet the threats of today and tomorrow," he said.

"It's about connecting America's existing allies and partners in new ways and amplifying our ability to collaborate, recognising there is no reasonable divide separating the interests of our Atlantic and Pacific partners."

Mr Morrison is due to travel to Washington, DC, next week to meet with Mr Biden, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga of Japan as part of the Quad partnership.

Security in the South China Sea was a key topic when the Quad leaders held their first virtual meeting in March.

FULL STATEMENT FROM JOINT LEADERS

As leaders of Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, guided by our enduring ideals and shared commitment to the international rules-based order, we resolve to deepen diplomatic, security, and defense cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, including by working with partners, to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century. As part of this effort, we are announcing the creation of an enhanced trilateral security partnership called "AUKUS" -- Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Through AUKUS, our governments will strengthen the ability of each to support our security and defense interests, building on our longstanding and ongoing bilateral ties. We will promote deeper information and technology sharing. We will foster deeper integration of security and defense-related science, technology, industrial bases, and supply chains. And in particular, we will significantly deepen cooperation on a range of security and defense capabilities.

As the first initiative under AUKUS, recognizing our common tradition as maritime democracies, we commit to a shared ambition to support

Australia in acquiring nuclear-powered submarines for the Royal Australian Navy. Today, we embark on a trilateral effort of 18 months to seek an optimal pathway to deliver this capability. We will leverage expertise from the United States and the United Kingdom, building on the two countries' submarine programs to bring an Australian capability into service at the earliest achievable date.

The development of Australia's nuclear-powered submarines would be a joint endeavour between the three nations, with a focus on interoperability, commonality, and mutual benefit. Australia is committed to adhering to the highest standards for safeguards, transparency, verification, and accountancy measures to ensure the non-proliferation, safety, and security of nuclear material and technology. Australia remains committed to fulfilling all of its obligations as a non-nuclear weapons state, including with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Our three nations are deeply committed to upholding our leadership on global non-proliferation.

Recognizing our deep defense ties, built over decades, today we also embark on further trilateral collaboration under AUKUS to enhance our joint capabilities and interoperability. These initial efforts will focus on cyber capabilities, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and additional undersea capabilities.

The endeavour we launch today will help sustain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. For more than 70 years, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, have worked together, along with other important allies and partners, to protect our shared values and promote security and prosperity. Today, with the formation of AUKUS, we recommit ourselves to this vision.

And Chinese trolls and bots were screaming hot Chinese sanctions were going to make Australia such a poor country. LOL
aussies wont learn, until its too late!

just as predicted by the bible prophecy about "Tarshish & her young lions"...will come together

Nah, PT PAL Director is right, better develop cheap and numerous unmanned midget submarine with torpedos/missile.

And how would we control those unmanned midget subs underwater..? it's not like we can just transmit radio signals underwater... using guide wires will really limit the range and usefulness of those drone subs... not to mention the mothership will still be vulnerable to attack... Installing an indigenous chain of underwater passive sub detectors (similar to SOSUS) in strategic ALKI entry / exit points (Malacca strait, Sunda strait, Lombok Strait, etc) is probably the best option.. but I'm not sure if it's easier than just getting a nuke sub...

That being said... although not impossible to get a nuke sub (even a developing non-nuclear country like Brazil is working on one), it's totally unrealistic for us trying to get one in the short to medium term... A more realistic (and achievable) goal is to further develop our civilian nuclear industry, which we already are the most experienced in SEA... more precisely we should strive for Thorium reactor technology, as we already have significant proven deposits of Thorium which we could use... and Thorium being much harder to weaponize... in the meantime we should also work on getting bigger long range conventional subs (like the Soryu class), but also capable of launching Land attack missiles (which the Soryu probably can't)...

No need to be submerged into water, just sail like this is already enough and detecting object in the sea through radar is difficult though.

The bigger impact is that in the past nuclear submarines were considered nuclear weapons, so sending them to a non-nuclear state was tantamount to proliferation. This amounts to the withdrawal of the United States and Britain from the nuclear non-proliferation agreement. I don't know what the European attitude is, but the nuclearization of the Middle East is inevitable.

Good luck, Israel. 8-)

.
Xi wouldn’t be amused. When Biden called Xi he failed to mention the nuclear arms delivery to Australia.
That’s unfair why Australia receives nuclear submarines? We want them too.

If it's not submerged then it's not a submarine / midget sub... but a USV... like the below Lundin USV Bonefish concept...

As expected... the French is pissed that they suddenly just lost the project they had worked for so hard and so long... 🤪 I wonder if there are penalties the Aussies needs to pay up for this..?

French Government, Naval Group React To Australia’s Decision To End Attack-Class Submarine Program
Naval News Staff 16 Sep 2021

Following yesterday’s announcement that the Australian Government will no longer be proceeding with the Attack Class Submarine Program, France’s Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Defense issued the following statement:

France takes note of the decision just announced by the Australian government to stop the “Future Submarine Program” ocean-class submarine program and to launch cooperation with the United States on nuclear powered submarines.
It is a decision contrary to the letter and the spirit of the cooperation which prevailed between France and Australia, based on a relationship of political trust as on the development of an industrial and technological base of defense of very high level in Australia.
The American choice which leads to the removal of an ally and a European partner such as France from a structuring partnership with Australia, at a time when we are facing unprecedented challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, whether on our values or on respect for multilateralism based on the rule of law marks an absence of coherence that France can only observe and regret.
While the joint communication on the European strategy for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region is being published today, France confirms its desire for very ambitious action in this region aimed at preserving the “freedom of sovereignty” of everyone. . The only European nation present in the Indo-Pacific with nearly two million of its nationals and more than 7,000 soldiers, France is a reliable partner which will continue to keep its commitments there, as it has always done.
The regrettable decision just announced on the FSP program only reinforces the need to raise the issue of European strategic autonomy loud and clear. There is no other credible way to defend our interests and values in the world, including the Indo-Pacific.

French shipbuilder Naval Group issued the following statement:
Naval Group takes note of the decision of the Australian authorities to acquire a fleet of nuclear submarines in collaboration with the United States and the United Kingdom.
The Commonwealth decided not to proceed with the next phase of the program. This is a major
disappointment for Naval Group, which was offering Australia a regionally superior conventional
submarine with exceptional performances. Naval Group was also offering Australia a sovereign
submarine capability making unrivalled commitments in terms of technology transfer, jobs and
local content.
For five years, Naval Group teams, both in France and in Australia, as well as our partners, have given their best and Naval Group has delivered on all its commitments.
The analysis of the consequences of this sovereign Australian decision will be conducted with the Commonwealth of Australia in the coming days.
