At last, a Western country stands up to Saudi Arabia on human rights

If Saudi people have no problem with it why is Sweden is itching.
Saudi people do have problems, and get punished harshly when the protest against the dictatorship.

There should be Sharia laws in Sweden. I find their laws inhuman and i just dislike them. WE demand Sharia law !!! Poor swedens :c SHARIA LAW FOR SWEDISH PEOPLE FTW.
I can because it's non of Sweden's concern.

We make it our concern and since we can, through the UN impose a norm, we will!
Either KSA changes its behaviour, or it will continue to be something you only touch with the far end of a stick...
Like it or not.

Its not just Saudi Arabia but all muslim countries need to improve their rights record. Democracy is a system favoured in Islam and the first 4 khalif's in some ways were elected. I don't know why we run from democracy and impose at 7th century system on our people.

At last, a Western country stands up to Saudi Arabia on human rights - The Washington Post

The Swedish government this week decided to scrap an arms deal with Saudi Arabia, effectively bringing to an end a decade-old defense agreement with the kingdom. The move followed complaints made by the Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom that she was blocked by the Saudis from speaking about democracy and women's rights at a gathering of the Arab League in Cairo.

Tensions between Stockholm and Riyadh have grown so acute that Saudi Arabia recalled its ambassador to Sweden on Wednesday. The Swedish foreign ministry had published Wallstrom's planned remarks in Cairo, which made no specific reference to Saudi Arabia but did urge reform on issues of women's rights.

The Saudi foreign ministry deemed her comments about being barred from speaking "offensive" and "blatant interference in its internal affairs," according to the BBC. In an interview with Swedish media, Wallstrom had described the punishment for a dissident blogger who was sentenced to 1,000 lashes as "medieval."

Saudi Arabia bought some $39 million in Swedish military equipment last year alone. The kingdom recently became the world's biggest arms importer; it's Sweden's third-largest non-Western customer for weapons.

That Sweden's center-left government has chosen to risk that sort of investment — and the ire of prominent business leaders at home — marks an important moment. For decades, Saudi Arabia's vast energy reserves and strategic position in the Middle East have led Western countries to politely skirt around the issue of the kingdom's draconian religious laws and woeful human rights record.

"This shows a break in the 50-year view in the West of 'We can’t touch Saudi Arabia,'" said Ali al-Ahmed, director of the Washington-based Institute of Gulf Affairs, which is often critical of internal Saudi policies.

The double-standard in Western attitudes toward Saudi Arabia has looked particularly glaring in the past year. After the Islamic State began decapitating American hostages in its custody, Saudi Arabia — a key ally in the U.S.-led coalition against the jihadists — carried out beheadings of inmates on death row.

American politicians routinely hurl invective against Iran, accusing the Islamic Republic of fomenting terrorism abroad and maintaining a tyranny at home. But Saudi Arabia has an even less democratic system than that in Tehran, and as the chief incubator of orthodox Salafism, has played its own unique role in the rise of fundamentalist terror groups around the Middle East and South Asia.

Sweden's Wallstrom, meanwhile, has emerged as an outspoken figure, not averse to taking moral stands. The Saudis apparently were concerned about her remarks after she earlier had described the Saudi regime as a dictatorship.

Last year, Sweden became one the most high-profile European countries to officially recognize Palestine as an independent state. Wallstrom said at the time that the move was intended to "support those who believe in negotiations and not violence," but it was widely interpreted as a rebuke to the right-wing government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It also showed up a host of Arab states, some of whom have long postured as champions of the Palestinian cause but have done little to improve their plight.

"Saudi Arabia and other countries start losing their edge as the main political voices on behalf of the Palestinians," said al-Ahmed. "A country like Sweden can now come in and say, 'Hey, Riyadh, what have you done for the Palestinians lately?' "

Sweden's decision came after months of "nail-biting," reports Bloomberg's Leonid Bershidsky. But it's likely just the start of a larger European conversation regarding the ethics of dealing with Saudi Arabia.

Surely the Saab-2000 is going back OR to PAF or might be sold.

KSA should work on pipelines from KSA to Oman then through sea to Pakistan and then going to India and China.

Saudi people do have problems, and get punished harshly when the protest against the dictatorship.

I dont think American or Europeans got democracy in a plate, if they want it they have to work for it, its not something that can be imported

Another secular liberal hell hole whining to spread its filth in KSA. Westerners need do some introspection to see whether they understand human beings , before assigning rights to them. Their current religion of liberalism is too intellectually inept to even let them do that introspection.

Btw incest is legal in liberal secular sweden. This Margot Wallström need to worry abt her screwed up society rather than whining why some country don't accept their animalistic way of life.

Archaic tribal religious laws cannot supersede universal fundamental human rights...

Are u even intellectually capable enough to know what a human is that u r defining rights for them. First try to become a human and than blabber abt rights.

Human right is now a western concept it's a global concept.. People who think other wise are just sticking thier head in the sand

Well the UDHR is indeed a western concept based on western culture and historical experience and is totally alien and contradictory to Islam and hence muslims simply reject that.

People who think they r racially superior based on "fallacy of evolution" are the ones sticking their head in the sand fuming with frustration.

As for apologies, Sweden consider KSA to be a medieval dictatorship,
no apologies will change that, and Arab diplomats do not show
a unity front behind locked doors.

A country where abominations like homosexuality and incest is legal and criminals roam scot free are in no position to define what is medieval.

I dont believe in god period..

Then why try to force your animalistic views on people who believe in God.

Its not just Saudi Arabia but all muslim countries need to improve their rights record. Democracy is a system favoured in Islam and the first 4 khalif's in some ways were elected. I don't know why we run from democracy and impose at 7th century system on our people.

Define rights and then talk abt record. Islam doesn't accept western concept of "Human rights" Islam has its own criteria of judging humans that is fundamentally different to western religion of liberal secularism.

And abt democracy. DO u know what it literally stands for? Its not simply voting or election. Rule of the people is what it stands for. People have the right to decide right & wrong is what democracy says. Its a system where any evil can be made not only permissible but obligatory. Homosexuality, incest, adultery, nudity etc etc. Muslims believe in rule of Allah alone. Allah alone is the sovereign and only He has the right to decide what is right & what is wrong. As such democracy is shirk with Allah (swt). Muslims who say democracy is favored in islam either don't know what democracy actually entails and what Islam is or worse they know both but still decide to commit the greatest sin. Saying Islam favors democracy is like saying islam favors shirk & kufr.

There is a reason why west keeps on calling muslims to implement democracy with the added prefix of secular. They simply don't mean election & voting they mean what it actually entails. Ordinary muslims r generally ignorant of what democracy actually is.

Islam has shura which is nothing like democracy. Its just a community of religiously knowledgeable pious people coming together to decide the next caliph. That's how the 3rd & 4th caliph were elected.

U seem to look down on islam calling it 7th century . Then why bother with what Islam favors and trying to conform a kufr system with Islam? Why keeping your feet on 2 boats ?
